James Holden despertou com estrondo para a música de dança em 2000 e tem vindo nesta presente década a distanciar-se de muitas das galáxias desse universo, renunciando programaticamente ao longo dos anos a alguns dos seus códigos e comportamentos, abandonando, inclusive, e para espanto de muitos, a sua arte no djing até chegarmos a The Inheritors, fabulosa obra de 2013 onde percebemos para onde a música de Holden caminhava: techno crepuscular, eletrónica em espiral psicadélica e uma noção de jazz implícita que saía das complexas estruturas dos seus sintetizadores modulares. The Animal Spirits é, finalmente, a concretização plena desse desejo superior. Neste álbum, a eletrónica é uma imponente batuta para algo maior que vive e vibra na sua música, onde jazz, folk e rituais africanos coexistem numa euforia coletiva que também contagia o corpo. Porque ainda é música de dança. Ainda há máquinas a funcionar. Mas agora estas máquinas estão invadidas pela natureza, por espiritualidade animal, como se sonhassem como nós.

James Holden burst suddenly and dramatically onto the dance music scene in 2000, but, in this current decade, he distanced himself from many of the galaxies of this musical universe, systematically renouncing, over the years, some of its codes and behaviours, while also, to the amazement of many, abandoning his art of DJing, until we arrived at The Inheritors, a fabulous work from 2013, in which we finally understood in which direction Holden’s music was heading: crepuscular techno, electronics in a psychedelic spiral and an implicit notion of jazz that emerged from the complex structures of his modular synthesisers. The Animal Spirits is, finally, the full realisation of that greater desire. In this album, electronics is an imposing springboard to something bigger that lives and vibrates in his music, where jazz, folk and African rituals coexist in a collective euphoria that also takes over the body. Because it’s still dance music. There are still machines at work. But now these machines are invaded by nature, by animal spirituality, as if they were dreaming like us.
