O nome do grupo inspira-se no livro «Hoodoo Herbs and Roots Magic», uma espécie de manual sobre ervas e raízes usadas na tradição mágica no sul dos Estados Unidos. A sua música incorpora a tradição da black music, os country blues dos anos 20, originalmente pensada para voz e guitarra, e também uma vertente mais criativa e avançada do jazz. Por um lado, transforma os blues de Charley Patton, Blind Willie Johnson, Geeshie Wiley e Robert Johnson, por outro, revisita o jazz inventivo de Julius Hemphill, John Carter, Marion Brown, Olu Dara, Phil Cohran, Sun Ra, Roscoe Mitchell, Henry Threadgill ou Pee Wee Russell.
