Maioritariamente autodidata, influenciada por músicas tão diversas como a clássica e o tango, construiu uma carreira fascinante e um estilo único e reconhecido. A sua reputação assenta maioritariamente no seu trabalho como compositora, num universo dominado por instrumentistas. Começou como «cigarette girl» no Clube de Jazz Birdland para mais tarde se afirmar como uma das maiores figuras do free jazz nos anos 1960. Nesse período, inúmeros músicos gravam composições suas: George Russell, Jimmy Giuffre, Paul Bley, entre outros. Com o seu segundo marido, o músico Michael Mantler, liderou a Jazz Composer's Orchestra Association e iniciou a editora JCOA, que editou uma série de registos históricos, gravados por Clifford Thornton, Don Cherry e Roswell Rudd. Entre eles, a teatral e surrealista ópera jazz «Escalator over the hill» (1972), na qual Carla Bley trabalhou durante 5 anos antes do lançamento e que é considerada por muitos a sua obra maior. Foi compositora e fez arranjos para a Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra e escreveu para Gary Burton o trabalho «A genuine tong funeral». Detentora de uma extensa discografia que abrange várias editoras e formações, viu o seu último trabalho de 2016, editado pela ECM, ser considerado pela revista «Down Beat» como uma masterpiece. «Andando el tiempo», com Andy Sheppard no saxofone e Steve Swallow no contrabaixo servirá, seguramente, de base ao concerto no SeixalJazz. During this period, numerous musicians record compositions of her: George Russell, Jimmy Giuffre, Paul Bley, among others. With her second husband, musician Michael Mantler, she led the Jazz Composer's Orchestra Association and began publishing JCOA, which edited a series of historical records, recorded by Clifford Thornton, Don Cherry and Roswell Rudd.
