A play that writes itself

A play that writes itself

a play that writes itself – be•wilder theatre company

Dois escritores
Guitarras distorcidas
Um deadline que se aproxima
tropeçam e caem repetidamente
Uma peça para escrever em 25 minutos
Batem com a cabeça na parede
E eles não têm nada

original concept by Raphael Ruiz and Ryan MacPherson
devised and performed by Raphael Ruiz, Joana Feijó and Simão Bárcia

a play that writes itself – be•wilder theatre company

Two writers
Distorted guitars
A deadline approaching
They trip and fall repeatedly
A play to write in 25 minutes
They bang their heads against the wall
And they have nothing

be•wilder theatre is thrilled to present a play that writes itself, a new piece of absurd comedy focusing
on the joys and struggles of creating work, a descent into the metaphorical madness of existence, and a rumination about how past present future can be one all the time.

Raphael Ruiz is an actor, writer, director and visual artist from Prague, Czech Republic. He is an acting graduate of The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and the artistic director of be•wilder theatre. His company’s productions range from physical theatre, commedia dell’arte, absurd theatre to opera and focus on new writing, and devising. His company’s work has been staged at festivals and venues across London including RADA Festival, Bloomsbury Festival, SLAM – King’s Cross, The Old Diorama, The Tristan Bates, Battersea Arts Centre, The Old Red Lion, King’s Head Theatre, The Royal College of Music and most recently abroad at The Rooted Moon International Theatre & Arts Festival 2018 in Castelsardo, Sardinia.

Joana Feijó is an actor, puppeteer, puppet builder and designer from Lisbon, Portugal. They are a graduate of East 15 acting school, and since then, have worked both nationally and internationally as a puppet builder and performer, often working freelance, for everything from Drag acts to Walkabout performances. Simão Bárcia is a guitarist that has shown his music in several projects in the rock and jazz genres including Camisa, Cimento, and Cíntia. He’s performed all over Lisbon in spaces like Casa Independente, Music Box and Sabotage.

be•wilder is a company formed of British and international artists, founded by graduates of the highly experimental MA Theatre Lab course at RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Art), which traditionally invites students from across the world. We have been creating and acting together for two years, in seven public productions; a reworking of Euripides’ Women of Troy at the Ancient Messene Theatre Festival in Greece, our graduate showcase FEAR, a devised play shown at the GBS Theatre at RADA, Old Joe’s Fish and Chill at the Wandsworth Arts Fringe, SLAM-King’s Cross, RADA Festival, Bloomsbury Festival, King’s Head Theatre, Close Your Eyes at The Old Diorama Arts Centre, The Old Red Lion and The Tristan Bates Theatre, Five Stories at The Battersea Arts Centre, and our first opera The Fermi Paradox (composed by Lara Poe, libretto by Raphael Ruiz) at The Royal College of Music in association with Tête à Tête as part of Frankenstein – The Modern Prometheus. Most recently we have shown our commedia dell’arte piece THREE’S A CROWD at The Rooted Moon International Theatre & Arts Festival 2018 in Castelsardo, Sardinia.

be•wilder is a platform that allows us to combine our variety of skills and experience in creating a new language that is the sum of all our histories. What binds us is an impulse to provoke, to dialogue with the audience, to shed light into subjects that matter in the present context. For us, words, sounds and gestures are equally important in the process of conveying meaning.
We generate material for our plays through a collective process of research and devising. We believe in collaboration, and in creating new pieces of writing that are related to us as members of a wider social context.
