De onde surgiu o espetáculo? Quando foi realizado pela primeira vez? Podemos nunca vir a saber - alguns dizem que começou em tempos medievais, ou mesmo em período pré-cristão. A primeira referência a Punch foi feita por Samuel Pepys em 1662. Ele viu um espetáculo de marionetas italiano com um personagem chamado "Policinella", em Covent Garden, Londres. Samuel escreveu sobre "Punchinello" e abreviou para "Punch". Há primos de Punch em muitos outros países, mas a marioneta vestida de vermelho e amarelo dos palhaços da corte é verdadeiramente britânica. Os personagens podem ir e vir, mas a essência de Mr. Punch como herói para o povo comum permanece. The Punch and Judy show is part of our English folk heritage and has been enjoyed from generation to generation. Where did the show originate? When was it first performed? We may never know – some say it started in mediaeval times, or was even pre-Christian. The first recorded reference to Punch was made by Samuel Pepys in 1662. He saw an Italian puppet show featuring a character called ‘Policinella’, in Covent Garden, London. He wrote of ‘Punchinello’, and abbreviated this to ‘Punch’. There are cousins of Punch in many other countries, but the puppet dressed in the red and yellow of our court jesters is truly British. The characters may come and go, but the essence of Mr. Punch as hero to the common folk remains. É membro dos "College of Punch e Judy Professors", "The Punch & Judy Fellowship" e "EQUITY". A esposa de Brian, Alison, ajuda nos espetáculos e é a "bottler". Juntos, como companhia “The Puppetree Company”, realizam outros espetáculos de marionetas de enorme sucesso, incluindo marionetas de vara, luva e fios. Professor Brian Davey has been performing his traditional Punch & Judy shows for over 30 years, in the U.K. and overseas. He is a member of the ‘College of Punch & Judy Professors’, ‘The Punch & Judy Fellowship’ and ‘EQUITY’. Brian’s wife Alison, helps with the shows and is the ‘bottler’.
