Enquanto a ligação indexante à realidade que abordam garante ao som e à imagem uma credibilidade específica, a postura do artista, a sua escolha estética, temática e política, bem como a posição autorreflexiva, podem gerar uma avaliação crítica sobre a constituição dessa realidade. É neste ponto que a arte encontra a filosofia. A reflexão sobre a relação entre o mundo factual e a sua apropriação subjetiva, questionando as reivindicações hegemónicas de objetividade e autoridade e problematizando as contradições inerentes à sociedade, são, por imanência, questões filosóficas. Problematizar a realidade – encontros entre arte, cinema e filosofia é um conjunto de programas que decorre em vários espaços culturais da cidade de Lisboa, a partir de Junho de 2018, numa parceria entre IFILNOVA (CineLab) / FCSH / UNL, Goethe-Institut Portugal e Maumaus / Lumiar Cité e em colaboração com Apordoc / Doc’s Kingdom. Estes encontros internacionais entre artistas e investigadores focam-se no momento em que a arte, o cinema e a filosofia se entrelaçam num diálogo produtivo. Numa colaboração com a Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, o primeiro programa apresenta o encontro entre a artista plástica Renée Green e a investigadora Ute Holl, acompanhado pela projeção de Begin Again, Begin Again (I.1887-1929) e pela estreia portuguesa de ED/HF, ambos da autoria da artista. Primeira estância de um longo filme homónimo, Begin Again, Begin Again (I.1887-1929) é um percurso investigativo através de formas de habitar e ocupar, bem como da miríade de sensações e perceções que fluem por meio do processo de permanecer vivo. O arquiteto austríaco R. M. Schindler é invocado através do seu manifesto “Modern Architecture: A Program” (1912), mas os pronunciamentos enumerados são interrompidos por reflexões conscientes sobre a estranheza da sobrevivência. Concebido como ‘filme-conversa’, ED/HF é uma meditação fílmica sobre experiências vividas, escrita, cinema e devires em curso. Embora superficialmente possa ser descrito como um retrato duplo de Renée Green e do artista e cineasta Harun Farocki, o foco principal não é tanto a comparação binária, mas antes as experiências pessoais de migração e os legados de deslocamento que os afetaram, e às suas obras. Questões de linguagem, história e tecnologias de reprodução de imagens são transformadas em ode comovente, celebração enlutada do poder da arte, do cinema e da poesia. Renée Green é artista, escritora e cineasta. Pacing, o seu mais recente projeto artístico, resultou de um envolvimento de dois anos com o Carpenter Center for Visual Arts (Cambridge, EUA). A sua obra foi apresentada em museus e bienais, incluindo: MAK Center for Art & Architecture (Los Angeles), Lumiar Cité, MoMA (Nova Iorque), Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (São Francisco), Musée Cantonal des Beaux Arts (Lausanne), Jeu de Paume (Paris), Portikus (Frankfurt), MOCA (Los Angeles), Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), ICA (Londres), Centre Pompidou (Paris), Manifesta 7 (Trentino) e Documenta 11 (Kassel). O seu trabalho de investigação abordou a epistemologia da técnica dos media, o cinema antropológico e experimental, e a história dos media na acústica, electroacústica e teoria radiofónica. Holl é autora de várias publicações, incluindo: “Cinema, Trance and Cybernetics” (Amsterdam University Press, 2017), “The Moses Complex: Freud, Schoenberg, Straub/Huillet” (University of Chicago Press, 2016), “Memoryscapes: Filmformen der Erinnerung” (com Matthias Wittmann, Diaphanes, 2014). While their indexical link to the reality they address grants images and sounds a specific credibility, the position of the artist, her aesthetic, thematic and political choices and self-reflexive stance, may generate a critical assessment of the very constitution of reality. At such a point, art meets philosophy. In order to reflect on the relationship between the factual world and its subjective appropriation, questioning hegemonic claims to objectivity and problematising the inherent contradictions of society are inherently philosophical issues. ‘Problematising reality – Encounters between art, cinema and philosophy’ is a series of projections and discussions that takes place in various cultural spaces in the city of Lisbon, starting in June 2018, in a partnership between IFILNOVA (CineLab) / FCSH / UNL, Goethe-Institut and Maumaus / Lumiar Cité and in collaboration with Apordoc / Doc’s Kingdom. These encounters between artists and researchers of international renown focus on the very moments where art, cinema and philosophy enter into a productive dialogue. With the collaboration of Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the first programme presents an exchange between artist Renée Green and researcher Ute Holl, accompanied by a screening of Green’s Begin Again, Begin Again (I.1887-1929), and the Portuguese premiere of her 2017 film, ED/HF. The first stanza of a homonymous longer film, Begin Again, Begin Again (I.1887-1929) is a probing passage through forms of inhabiting, occupying, and the myriad sensations and perceptions that flow through the process of staying alive. The Austrian architect R. M. Schindler is invoked via his 1912 Manifesto, “Modern Architecture: A Program”, yet the numbered pronouncements are interrupted by another consciousness’ musings on the strangeness of survival. Conceived as a ‘film as a conversation’, Green’s ED/HF is a cinematic meditation on lived experience, writing, film and ongoing becomings. At first glance, ED/HF could be described as a double portrait of Green and artist and filmmaker Harun Farocki, but ED/HF’s primary focus is guided less by a binary comparison of these two personas, than by the pair’s personal experiences of migration and the legacies of displacement that have affected both artists and their work. Questions of language, history, and image reproduction technologies are rendered into a touching threnody, a mournful celebration of the power of art, film and poetry. Renée Green is an artist, writer, and filmmaker. Green’s most recent project, Pacing, was a two-year engagement with the Carpenter Center for Visual Arts, Cambridge, MA.
