"Dextrous" (1989), NOW's first release, is true to the bleep aesthetics, the electro-funk mutation that made Warp's identity from the start, but soon George Evelyn's real nature came to life: a blend of hip hop beats, reggae, soul funk and jazz, totally in tune with trip hop and other downtempo experiments in dance music that emerged in the early 90's. The thing with NOW, what really makes the difference, and is clear since the release of the classic album Smokers Delight (1995) is the extra feel good vibes, that instant happiness effect that happens both because of George's natural coolness and the fact that he digs deep in search of true musical gems. George Evelyn keeps faithful to his fundamentals (and to Warp, he has just release the excellent Shape The Future) and knows how to makes us feel that all is well when the music is right.
