Por vezes, entre os strobes da pista e o emaranhado colorido do seu tecto, irrompe a sensação de sermos parte de algo superior, algo maior. As visitas que Robert Hood, um dos padrinhos do techno de Detroit, nos tem feito, enquadram-se sem dúvida neste tipo de ocasiões, e têm-nos demonstrado para lá de dúvidas, que isto de dançar é bem mais do que escapismo puro, e mover-mo-nos ao som de música funcional. É por isso que o sentimos como um cúmplice do que somos, um símbolo daquilo em que acreditamos. Por isso esta LuXX gravita em torno dele. Tal como para Hood, o techno foi uma forma de aceder ao Divino, ele para nós já foi repetidamente um mensageiro de esperança, comunhão e unidade. Não nos sai da cabeça a energia sobrenatural que fez a pista do Lux “voar baixinho” na sua estreia cá. E quantos não terão revivido o fascínio quase adolescente que esta música nos provoca, ao vê-lo partilhar a cabine com a sua filha Lyric, enquanto Floorplan, transmitindo-lhe o seu saber ali mesmo à nossa frente? Robert Hood é um fazedor e testemunho da nossa história, sendo ele mesmo história da nossa música. Em união, esta noite revivemos memórias do que foi, e imaginamos novas memórias do que virá. Bastava esta frase recente de Eric Cloutier, que já conseguiríamos deixar descrito na perfeição o que esperar desta sua estreia. Um detroiteano como Hood, Cloutier tem construído uma reputação sólida, ao longo de duas décadas, enquanto DJ “psicopata do digging” (palavras dele, também), e possuidor de classe imaculada a escolher, sequenciar e misturar esses discos, normalmente encontrados nas paragens mais quentes e hipnóticas do techno e do house. Saíndo de Detroit ainda jovem, baseou-se em Nova Iorque onde fez durante vários anos parte da família da festa The Bunker, abrindo ou fechando pistas para basicamente todos os nomes relevantes do techno que vos possam passar pela cabeça. A dedicação à busca pela faixa perfeita tinha de, eventualmente, resultar em incursões pela produção e edição, com a sua label Palinoia, fundada já em Berlim, onde agora vive, a assumir aqui o destaque. Se bem que a tal faixa perfeita não exista e Cloutier seja suficientemente modesto para não achar que seria ele a criá-la, a definição da palavra Palinoia diz o que nos falta saber dele: “a repetição obsessiva de um acto até ser perfeito ou dominado”. Ser espectador da arte dessa repetição obsessiva de Eric Cloutier, é nosso privilégio, finalmente. Se em Chicago viveu a música house no seu berço, absorvendo conhecimento e bebendo directamente dos cânones do estilo, em Berlin foi acolhida numa cena musical maior e mais estabelecida - e com a suas próprias iterações house e techno. Desse cruzamento surge um híbrido inegavelmente eficaz que incorpora tanto a espontaneidade e urgência da house original como o detalhe e a cerebralidade do techno alemão. O seu som, como DJ ou produtora, casa estas duas correntes na perfeição; é quente e festivo mas moderno e de recorte futurista. Foi o som da 'Cidade Ventosa' que o formou: a house clássica, claro, mas também o juke, enquanto beat e enquanto movimento de dança. Nova Iorque também ajudou a fazer Shaun J Wright - foi lá que conheceu Andy Butler, o fundador da derradeira banda-fetiche de nu-disco, os Hercules and Love Affair, que recrutou a sua voz para o longa-duração 'Blue Songs' e alguns anos de digressão. Essa experiência, bem no centro do turbilhão mais imaginativo da música de dança colorida e soulful, deu-lhe asas e confiança para assinar música intensamente pessoal (mas não menos dançável) já nesta década, quando voltou para a sua Chicago-natal e começou a colaborar com Alinka. Juntos criaram a Twirl, inicialmente uma festa, agora também uma editora que tem lançado alguma da house mais contagiosa e arquetipal - mas em tudo moderna - que o underground da dança global tem testemunhado. The three phases of a ritual lived by many, night after night, for 20 years now. Sometimes, between the strobes in front of us and the colorful mess of lights above us, a feeling emerges of being part of something bigger, something beyond. Detroit techno godfather Robert Hood´s visits here, are undoubtedly amongst these occasions, and have proved beyond doubt that dancing is so much more than pure escapism and moving to a functional type of music. This is why we see him as an accomplice of what we are, a symbol of what we believe in. This is why this LuXX party is made around him. Just like techno was a way for Hood to access the Divine, so has he been, repeatedly, a messenger of hope, unity and communion to us. We´ll never forget the supernatural energy felt on his debut here, which made our dancefloor levitate. And how many of us revived the adolescent fascination this music instills in us, seeing him pass his knowledge on to his daughter Lyric right in front us, as Floorplan? Robert Hood is a maker and a testimonial of our history, while being himself history of our music. Tonight, united, we relive memories of what was and imagine new memories of what is to be. ERIC CLOUTIER ”The techno I grew up with and have supported and played for years has a funk, sway, groove and bounce to it that I think is universal in its way to get bodies engaged on the dancefloor”. Simply putting here this recent phrase by Eric Cloutier, would be a perfect description of what to expect of his debut. A detroitian like Hood, Cloutier has been building for two decades an incredibly solid reputation, as a “record-digging psychopath” DJ (his words too), and possessing immaculate class in picking, sequencing and mixing those records, usually coming from the warmer and more hypnotic sides of techno and house. Having left Detroit still young, he established himself in New York as part of pary institution The Bunker´s family, honing his chops by warming-up or closing down for every relevant name in techno you can think of. His dedication to the search for the perfect track had to, eventually, result in incursions into production and releasing, with his own label Palinoia, brought up in Berlin, where he now resides, taking center stage in that. Even though that perfect track doesn´t exist and Cloutier is modest enough to think he´s not the one who´ll be creating it, the definition of the word Palinoia tells you whatever you still need to know: “the obsessive repetition of an act until it is perfected or mastered.” Being a spectator of Eric Cloutier´s mastering of the art of obsessive repetition is, at last, our privilege. ALINKA Once again, Alinka brings us the news from the windy city of Chicago as she returns to Lux for chapter two of her tale of two cities. If, in one hand, Chicago allowed her to truly breathe and live house music right at the source, learning and studying its blueprint in the city where it was originated, Berlin, on the other hand, welcomed Alinka into a bigger, more organised scene that also had its own iterations of house and techno. From that encounter comes an undeniably effective hybrid simultaneously incorporating the spontaneity and sense of urgency of original house with the detail and brainy characteristic of german techno. Her sound, both as DJ and producer, combines those two currents to a tee; warm and festive but also modern and with a futuristic edge. Always working close to her production and label partner Shawn J. Wright, Alinka has threaded a path that's been taking her straight to the best dancefloors in the world, while also creating some history in key labels such as Classic, Crosstown Rebels or her own Twirl Recordings. SHAUN J. WRIGHT The fiery yin for Alinka's cool yang, Shaun J Wright is the authentic Chicago child, both literally and sonically. The sound of the 'Windy City' made him: classical house of course, but also juke, both as a beat and as a dance movement. New York also helped make Shaun J Wright - that's where he met Andy Butler, the founder of the ultimate nu-disco fetish band Hercules and Love Affair, who recruited his vocals for the 'Blue Songs' album and years of touring. That experience, right in the center of the most imaginative whirlwind of colorful and soulful dance music, gave him wings and confidence to create intensely personal (but no less danceable) music when he returned to his native Chicago and began to collaborate with Alinka. Together they founded Twirl, initially a party, now also a label that has released some of the most infeccious and archetypal house - although modern - that the global dance underground has witnessed. His sets with Alinka elevate dancefloors around the world to delirium - vocals are whispered live, with melodies as evocative as the ones pioneers like Robert Owens or Larry Heard introduced us to.
