Dis (Places). 17.05.18 Divine southgate-smith + Clara Imbert Dis (Places), uma exposição de Clara Imbert e Divine Southgate-Smith compreende um novo corpo de trabalho que as duas fundadoras do ( ) PARENTHESIS STUDIO criaram durante o ano passado. A exposição mostra algumas das primeiras investigações colaborativas deste duo relativamente aos seus interesses comuns nas propriedades temporais, semióticas e ópticas do espaço. Ao adoptar uma abordagem física e metafórica com base na desconstrução e reunião das geometrias do espaço da galeria, a dupla pretende apresentar um ambiente que permite uma exploração sensorial. Focando-se nas possíveis intersecções que existem entre linguagem (forma literal e conteúdo implícito) e espaço (temporal e abstracto), apresentam-nos uma justaposição de instâncias onde os objectos no espaço tornam-se navios etéreos em constante movimento no tempo. Como resultado, está implicada uma sensação simultânea de instabilidade e ordem, contemplada nos objectos acústicos, visuais e espaciais. Deste modo, o que à primeira vista parece estático, está, na verdade, em constante movimento, ressoando no enquadramento das paredes da galeria. Simetria / assimetria, dissonância / consonância, proximidade / distância, fragmentam o espaço actuando quase como símbolos que emergem sem ordem definida. Os objectos tornam-se uma sequência, trabalhando como dimensões perceptíveis e imaginadas, permanentemente à beira do deslocamento. Ao entrar no espaço específico, podemos observar símbolos fugazes como a superfície de um espelho ou a perspectiva distorcida de uma forma. O ritmo de um dispositivo duradouro e de uma imagem em movimento é equilibrado e de seguida desequilibrado, enquanto luzes projectadas criam escapatórias, e surgem paisagens ilusórias. Na transformação progressiva de um horizonte, o espectador detecta alterações nas composições. Ao navegar, o espaço evidencia relevos esculturais feitos de materiais como o metal, vidro e madeira em paralelo com desenhos, impressões e textos. Ecrãs e projecções incitam a comunicação entre outros elementos indicativos do tempo como a água, areia e pedras. Os elementos serão usados em conjunto ou separadamente, actuando como vestígios da formação temporal de um espaço. No limite, as representações virtual e material das peças são estudadas, analisadas transversalmente até ao ponto onde as cores tornam-se luzes e as linhas tornam-se formas, delineando um método para a sua compreensão, e numa simbiose criam a sua própria linguagem espacial. “No final, não só é o espaço visto como linguístico, mas a linguagem é vista como espacial”. ‘Thinking Space’ Mike Crang and Nigel Thrift. The exhibition displays some of the duo’s first collaborative investigations concerning their shared interests in the temporal, semiotic and optical properties of space. Adopting a metaphorical and physical approach based on deconstructing and reassembling the geometries of the gallery space, the duo aims to present to the spectator an environment that permits a sensorial exploration. Highlighting the possible intersections that exist between language (literal form and implicated content) and space (temporal and abstract), they present a juxtaposition of instances where the objects in the space become ethereal vessels constantly shifting in time. As a result, a simultaneous sense of instability and order is implied, encompassed by the acoustical, visual and spatial objects. Hence, what may seem at first glance to be still, is in fact in constant movement, resonating in the frame of the gallery walls. Symmetry / asymmetry, dissonance / consonance, proximity / distance, fragment the space acting almost as symbols that surface with no defined order. The objects become a sequence, working in perceptible and imagined dimensions, perpetually at the cusp of displacement. Entering the site-specific installation, one could observe fleeting gestures such as the surface of a mirror or the distorting perspective of a form. The pace of a durational apparatus and a moving image is balanced then unbalanced, while projected lights create escapes, illusionary landscapes appear. In the progressive change of a horizon, the viewer notices slight changes in the compositions. While navigating, the space reveals sculptural reliefs made of materials such as metal, glass and wood alongside drawings, prints and texts. Screens and projections prompt a conversation between other indicative elements of time such as water, sand and stones. The elements will be used in common or separately working as the relics of the temporal formation of a space.
