Da primeira dama de Detroit - K-HAND - ao som do futurismo - rRoxymore - passando pelo house exotique de Barcelona - Pional Musiq - não vão faltar motivos para se porem a caminho de Santa Apolónia. K-HAND soundcloud.com/khand residentadvisor.net/dj/k-hand O nome Keli Hand não aparece vezes suficientes na história da música house e techno de Detroit - e não é por falta de oportunidades; a genealogia da música electrónica da Motor City já foi contada e recontada inúmeras vezes e por várias vozes, e dependendo de quem a conta esta pode ter três pioneiros ou quatro (se considerarmos Eddie Fowlkes), pode dividir-se em mais ou menos gerações, se dermos a devida importância a "novatos" como Jay Daniel ou Kyle Hall, e até pode ter opiniões diversas (favoráveis ou não) sobre o papel da indústria musical europeia na forma como o techno americano foi mostrado ao mundo. Deveria, no entanto, incluir sempre as mulheres que fizeram parte desse movimento: DJs e produtoras como DJ Minx, Diviniti, K-hand e várias outras. Será por K-Hand ter tido menos edições e em editoras de menos visibilidade que foi continuando um segredo bem guardado? Difícilmente; a sua discografia estende-se confortavelmente acima das várias dezenas de discos lançados em algumas da editoras mais importantes da história da música de dança, incluindo selos como !K7, Warp, Distance, Third Ear, Tresor ou, mais recentemente, a трип de Nina Kraviz. Esta última foi capaz de a tirar do domínio de coleccionadores e DJs mais atentos para uma espécie de estrelato underground mais que merecido - se isso fizer sentido. Como DJ sempre se manteve bastante activa, dado o seu talento para criar jornadas irresistíveis que trilha unindo os pontos entre o house mais festivo e o techno mais funky, mas 2018 parece trazer-lhe ainda mais promessa ao rodar ferozmente num circuito que inclui os melhores clubes do mundo e (finalmente) também alguns festivais. Os sintetizadores que hoje em dia são idolatrados eram apenas o que os produtores tinham à mão: por um lado, podiam pagá-los (importante), já que muitas vezes eram considerados obsoletos por soarem demasiado artificiais; mas por outro lado - e mais importante que tudo - o som que geravam era de facto novo. Para uma produtora e DJ como rRoxymore, comprometida sem medos com a inovação e com o desmantelamento das ideias mais cristalizadas sobre música de dança, essa compulsão é familiar. "Sinto que nos últimos anos a música de dança se tornou mais conservadora - como se sofresse de uma espécie de nostalgia. Noto isso pela quantidade de re-edições nas lojas de discos, ou pela obsessão com sintetizadores antigos - que soam bem, mas não percebo porque é que as pessoas ficam presas no passado. É irónico fazer parte duma scene com ferramentas tão avançadas, mas no entanto estamos a olhar para trás.", disse numa entrevista do ano passado à Resident Advisor. E esse desconforto com o que já foi feito, essa vontade de desbravar caminho, são o nome do meio da música que faz e que escolhe tocar nos seus DJ sets. A sua música começou por ver a luz do dia na Human Level, a editora de Planningtorock, e hoje já foi editada em casas tão únicas como a Cómeme, a Ostgut Ton, a Huntleys & Palmers ou a Don't Be Afraid. Sempre diferente, rRoxymore é daquelas DJs que nunca sabemos o que vai fazer - mas isso não quer dizer nada: ela sabe exactamente o que fazer de cada vez, e deixa-nos sempre boquiabertos. Transpira futurismo verdadeiro, do que foge a sete pés de uma visão eurocêntrica, enquanto faz parecer fácil chegar àquele equilíbrio ténue entre contrastes refrescantes e bolhas hipnotizantes de layering. Miguel Barros iniciou-se nas edições discográficas há uma década atrás, quando ainda usava o pseudónimo Alt Fenster para os seus lançamentos em casas de renome como a Hivern Discs, a Traum ou a Proton. O som que produzia, na altura, era menos arrastado, mais assumidamente techno e em linha com muita da música de dança mais sonhadora de meados dos anos 2000 - uma referência óbvia seria a Kompakt de Gui Boratto ou The Field. Com Pional, a emoção mantém-se mas o ritmo abranda - a progressão alonga-se para abrir espaço na sua música, que é agora mais romântica e atmosférica. A íntima relação que conserva com a editora Hivern Discs serviria como base para colaborações com outro espanhol incontornável na música electrónica dos últimos anos, John Talabot. Só o futuro poderá dizer quais os próximos passos nesta estratosférica ascensão de Pional, mas certamente que nos deixará deliciosas pistas quando aterrar na nave-mãe de Santa Apolónia. A não perder. The story of the Motor City's electronic music has been told and retold numerous times and by different voices, and depending on who's narrating, it can have three pioneers or four (if you consider Eddie Fowlkes) or it can be split into a different number of generations, depending on wether you include "newbies" like Kyle Hall or Jay Daniel or not, and it can even have very different opinions (favourable or not) about the role of the european music scene in showing american techno to the world. What it should always include, however, is the women who have been part of that movement: DJs and producers such as DJ Minx, Diviniti, K-Hand and many others. Could it be that K-Hand remained a well-kept secret all these years because her releases were fewer and picked up by smaller labels only? Hardly. Her discography confortably reaches several dozens of releases and is spread out by some of dance music's most important labels, including !K7, Warp, Distance, Third Ear, Tresor, her own Acacia Records and, more recently, Nina Kraviz' own трип. The latter was in part responsible for breaking her from the domain of collectors and more attentive DJs to a kind of well-deserved underground stardom - if that makes sense. As a DJ she has always kept busy, given her talent to create irresistible journeys that weave together uplifting house groovers and the funkiest techno jams. But 2018 brings even more promise as K-Hand ferociously works an impressive circuit of some of the best clubs in the world a few festivals too (finally). Her Boiler Room is a great display of the kind of control Keli can exert over dancing bodies and soon enough we'll have her at Lux, compelling us to move in ways we won't be able to resist. rRoxymore The original Detroit compulsion was, perhaps, to invent the future. The synthesizers that are idolized nowadays used to be what producers could get their hands on: on the one hand, they could afford them (important), as they were often considered obsolete for sounding too artificial; but on the other hand - and most importantly - the sound they emanated indeed new. For a producer and DJ like rRoxymore, fearlessly commited with innovation and with the dismantling of crystalized ideas abput dance music, this is a familiar compulsion. "I feel that for the past several years dance music has become more conservative, like it suffers from a form of nostalgia—you only need to see how records shops are full of reissues. It's the same with synths. Most of them are really good but it makes me wonder why we are so stuck in the past. It's is really ironic to be part of a scene where we use such contemporary, advanced tools, yet still we are looking back." she said in a recent interview for Resident Advisor. And that discomfort with what's already been done, that will to blaize a trail, are all over the music she makes and chooses to play in her DJ sets. Her music started by seeing the light of day through Human Level, Planningtorock's label, and to this day it's been released by one-of-a-kind labels like Cómeme, Ostgut Ton, Huntleys & Palmers or Don't Be Afraid. Always different, rRoxymore is one of those DJs whose sets one could never predict - but that doesn't mean she doesn't know exactly what she's doing (she really does), and always leaves us in awe. She transpires real futurism, the kind that retracts from a eurocentric vision, while making it seem easy to tap into that delicate balance between refreshing contrast and hypnotizing layering bubbles. One of the most vital DJs of our time. Pional Musiq Forget the senseless Portuguese sayings that criticize Spain; the music by Madrid-bred Pional brings us a whole new kind of popular knowledge - emotional rhythm and beats soaked in space and contemplation. The sound he produced back then was faster, decidedly techno and aligned with some of the dreamiest dance music of the mid 2000s - an obvious reference would be Gui Borattto or The Field's Kompakt. With Pional, emotion stays afloat but the rhythm slows down - the progressions stretch out to make space in his music, which is now more romantic and atmospheric. The intimate relationship he keeps with Hivern Discs became the base for collaborations with another ineffable Spanish producer, John Talabot. Only the future can tell what's next in Pional's statospheric ascension, but we will surely receive delightful clues when he lands in the Santa Apolónia mothership. Unmissable.
