DJ Stingray residentadvisor.net/dj/djstingray Uma das grandes histórias de tempos recentes na cena electrónica é o ressurgimento de popularidade do electro (isto é, a variante detroitiana do electro), e é mais ou menos unânime que há dois nomes que lideram essa renascença. Um deles é Helena Hauff, e o outro, o nosso convidado desta noite, Sherard Ingram, ou como o falecido James Stinson dos Drexciya o baptizou, DJ Stingray. A referência Drexciya é inevitável ao falar de Stingray, porque ser o DJ de serviço nos espectáculos do influente duo, pessoalmente escolhido por Stinson, foi a primeira grande oportunidade da carreira deste veterano. Para trás estavam anos de um DJing quase de combate nas exigentes pistas de Detroit, que formaram o seu inconfundível estilo de DJing, preciso, cortante, e feito à velocidade da luz. Mesmo com o fim dos Drexciya, a reputação ganha permitiu-lhe acompanhar o florescimento do electro, e actualmente, é o que se vê: festivais, os maiores clubes europeus, e compilações na Tresor (o vertiginoso volume 4 da série ‘Kern’). Mas nem só de electro vive Stingray, um DJ que afirma sentir a responsabilidade de respeitar o legado dos seus antecessores de Detroit. E portanto, é de esperar techno e funk com abundância, só que tocados a uma cadência como pouco se ouve. No fundo, o equivalente auditivo das descargas de electricidade que o nome Stingray promete. Esta noite promete ser um choque ao sistema. Há loucura da qual nascem ideias fora da caixa, e com a qual se desbravam caminhos. À italiana Madalba chamam louca, e percebe-se porquê ao ouvi-la tocar, mas ela sabe muito bem o que faz, porque é de loucura focada que se trata. Alba é, primeiro que tudo, louca por techno. É isso que explica ter saído da sua pequena cidade Natal no sul de Itália assim que pôde, primeiro para Berlim e depois a própria Detroit, antes de se re-estabelecer na capital alemã. Foram muitos quilómetros a entender esta estética como fenómeno social, nas suas próprias palavras, e que a levaram a aliar-se a crews como a Detroit Techno Militia e a Homopatik. Com um disco a sair brevemente na label portuguesa Sombra, Madalba continua a extravasar a sua paixão pela música nas festas “Buttons” no clube berlinense ://about blank, que ajuda a organizar, e onde podemos experienciar não só a sua inclinação para um techno rude, áspero e catártico, mas também uma versatilidade pouco comum em DJs usualmente alinhados com as vertentes mais industriais do género, guiada por um sentido de risco incrível. O resultado é um verdadeiro cocktail molotov de groove e energia. E por isso a chamam Madalba. One of them is Helena Hauff, and the other, our guest tonight, Sherard Ingram, or like the late James Stinson of Drexciya named him, DJ Stingray. The Drexciya reference is inevitable when we talk about Stingray, because the first big break in this veteran´s career came when he was picked by Stinson himself, to be the duo´s touring DJ. Behind him there were already many years of being a sort of DJ warrior in Detroit´s seriously demanding dancefloor, where he honed his unmistakable DJ style, precise, cutting, and executed at the speed of light. Even after Drexciya was over, the reputation he gained allowed him to at the forefront of electro´s rise and currently, it´s like this: festivals, the greatest cubs in Europe or Tresor mix compilations (the vertiginous 4th volume of the ‘Kern’ series). But there´s more to Stingray than electro, being as he is a DJ that affirms his wish to respect the legacy of the Detroit pioneers. So, obviously, you can expect lots of techno and funk, only he plays them at a pace that we rarely get to witness. It´s kind of the aural equivalent of the electric discharges that his name alludes to. This night is sure to be a shock to the system. Madalba Although we usually associate madness with erratic behaviour and being out of control, we must keep in mind that madness can do something else. There´s also the kind of insanity from which out of the box ideas are born, and with which new paths are discovered. They call italian Madalba mad, and listening to her play you can understand why, but she knows very well what she´s doing, because what we´re talking here is focused madness. Alba is, first of all, crazy about techno. And that explains why she left her little native city in the south of Italy as soon as she could, first going to Berlin and then to Detroit itself, before re-establishing in the german capital. She treaded many miles in order to understand this aesthetic as a social phenomena, as she herself describes it, which took her to crews like Detroit Techno Militia and Homopatik. Currently, Madalba keeps displaying her passion for the music at the “Buttons” parties at ://about blank club, which she helps put together, and where we can experience not only her predilection for harsh, nasty and cathartic techno, but also a versatility which is uncommon to DJs leaning on the harder strains of the genre, guided by an incredible willingness for taking risks.
