Nakama is a five-piece band led by Norwegian bass player Christian Meaas Svendsen. The group was founded in 2015 and has already released four uncompromising albums on their own label Nakama Records. The music draws influences from modern contemporary art music and various kinds of traditional music from around the world. Amidst concepts and written structures the players are left with plenty of room for individual expression. The unorthodox line-up and the members skills and set of techniques have given Nakama a sound of their own, making the ensemble into a good representative for a new generation of improvising musicians.
The word Nakama is Japanese and can be translated as comrade, or simply a community of equals watching over one another. This non-hierarchic approach is what Nakama is all about - both in spirit and in flesh
