E não se trata aqui da velha discussão sobre se é da sua autoria a primeira faixa de techno ou não (‘Clear’ do seu projeto Cybotron), porque o epíteto de “the Originator” há muito que é seu e ninguém o contesta, e foi Juan quem primeiro usou a palavra “techno” para categorizar a mistura de funk, disco e pós-punk movida a batidas quatro-por-quatro que é hoje em dia um fenómeno global. Desde sempre associado aos companheiros dos “Belleville Three” de Detroit, Atkins tem no entanto uma carreira feita sem passos em falso nem desvios da visão permanentemente futurista e desafiadora que mostrou desde o 1º dia. Trata-se de um artista que nunca descansou sobre os seus méritos, o que não espanta em alguém que, quando questionado talvez vezes demais sobre Detroit, respondeu que na sua cidade lhe interessavam mais os robots da fábrica da Ford do que a música da Motown. No fim de contas, Juan Atkins faz o que faz porque ama o que faz, e não tanto por querer propositadamente à frente de todos os outros. E as provas ainda hoje se sucedem, como na maravilhosa colaboração com Moritz Von Oswald, Borderland, que ainda há meses lançou mais um EP, ‘Angles’, na Tresor. Tudo começou com Juan Atkins. E num tempo de incertezas como o nosso, trazê-lo até nós é um relembrar fundamental do surgimento do techno como um acto de rebelião, uma expressão do espírito humano a atrever-se a vencer o medo do futuro. And this has nothing to do with the old discussion of he is the maker of the first techno track or not (‘Clear’ by his project Cybotron), because the nickname “the Originator” has long been his and no one dares to question it, and it was Juan who first used the word “techno” to define the mix of funk, disco and post-punk based on four-by-four beats which has since become a global phenomenon. Although always associated with his friends in Detroit´s “Belleville Three”, Atkins has however a career built with assured steps and no deviations from the permanently futuristic and challenging vision he displayed since day one.This is an artist who never rested on his laurels, which makes sense in someone who, when questioned probably one time too many about Detroit, replied he was more interested in the robots at the Ford factory, than in the music of Motown. At the end of the day, Juan Atkins does what he does for love of what he does, and not quite because he feels he has to be ahead of the curve. And the proof is still quite visible nowadays, as on his wonderful collab with Moritz Von Oswald, Borderland, which just a few months ago released another EP, ‘Angles’, on Tresor. It all started with Juan Atkins. And in times of trouble like ours, bringing him here is a fundamental reminder of techno´s birth as an act of rebellion, an expression of the human spirit daring to beat the fear of the future.
