Apesar de ser DJ há cerca de 25 anos, para Patrick Russell, a ideia de vir tocar discos a um país da Europa era absolutamente impensável até há pouco mais de 2 anos. Por essa altura, quando recebeu o primeiro convite para actuar fora dos EUA, no famoso festival Labyrinth no Japão, já ele tinha pensado várias vezes em simplesmente desistir. Seria o preço a pagar por uma dedicação quase obsessiva à música que de facto ama, mesmo quando essa música não era de todo popular. Mas aí tudo mudou, com o seu techno profundamente intoxicante a derreter cérebros nas montanhas japonesas. Foi o merecido momento de revelação de um DJ que antes de o ser, era um apaixonado raver na Detroit dos anos 90, vivendo na linha da frente de cada festa, aprendendo a conhecer a música literalmente de bloco de notas em punho, a olhar para as etiquetas de discos que heróis seus como Richie Hawtin e Daniel Bell tocavam. Assim se formou um DJ a quem os epítetos de “incendiário” e “infalível” têm sido atribuídos com uma frequência estonteante. E tudo começa com uma intenção simples, que o próprio define como querer ter a certeza que quem o ouça ainda esteja dias depois a pensar, “porra, ele tocou lá uma faixa…”.  Mas, afirmamos nós, a vinda de Patrick Russell será para relembrar por muito mais do que alguns dias.

Se vos dissermos que a tradução do nome Evigt Mörker resulta na frase “escuridão eterna”, é capaz de ficar a ideia de que estamos perante alguém mais inclinado para produzir música depressiva, do que algo que nos faça mover numa pista. E de facto, há muito de soturno e introspectivo na música de Evigt Mörker, e as suas qualidades extremamente hipnóticas e meditativas levam a que essa música produza um efeito psicológico de infinitude. Mas este misterioso sueco mostra uma especial capacidade de encher a mais monocromática paisagem de raios de luz e cor. Entrelaçadas no tapete sonoro de techno vagamente “trancey” que as suas faixas criam, existem sempre atmosferas cheias de esperança ou vozes espectrais que parecem descer dos próprios céus. Ao longo de lançamentos na sua editora do mesmo nome, mas também em selos incontornáveis do techno mais deep, como a Northern Electronics e Semantica, Evigt Mörker tornou mais fácil dizer que o techno pode ser uma forma musical extremamente bela. Gabi von Dub

Um poeta escreveu um dia “nós somos os fazedores de música, nós somos os sonhadores de sonhos”. Gabi Von Dub é um sonhador da música e um fazedor de sonhos, um eterno fascinado por sons e pessoas e uma confessa “esponja musical”. O entusiasmo quase juvenil com que encara o universo sonoro e a sua crença na capacidade que a música pode ter de quebrar as barreiras levantadas pelos humanos a si próprios, pela sublimação do ego e expansão da consciência, impelem-no desde 99 a percorrer um caminho tortuoso mas feito com a paixão e a convicção de quem sabe que tem a alma no sítio certo, Esta chegada ao Lux é um dos momentos mais brilhantes, deste caminho. Para trás, um percurso feito entre os largos espaços abertos do Boom Festival ou o túnel do Gare Porto, dos chill-outs da Quest4Goa aos experimentalismos da label Arctic Dub, de que é A&R e label manager desde 2014. Carregando uma das mais completas culturas musicais que encontrarão num DJ nacional, Gabi aplica essa vastidão de conhecimento a uma capacidade incomum de encaixar-se em diversos contextos mas também extravasá-los e assim desafiar as “caixinhas” em que tendemos a pôr a música. Tardou, mas a visão caleidoscópico-fractal de Gabi Von Dub chegou enfim ao Lux.

Patrick Russell

For Patrick Russell, despite being a DJ for about 25 years already, the idea of coming to an european country to play records was unthinkable until more or less 2 years ago. Until that time, when he got an invite to play at Japan´s famous Labyrinth festival, he had thought many times about quitting. That would be the price to pay for an almost obsessive dedication to the music that he truly loved but which always seemed to be out of fashion. But it all started to change around then, with his profoundly intoxicating brand of techno melting many minds in the japanese mountains. It was the moment of revelation of a DJ that even before ever being one, had been a passionate raver in 90s Detroit, camped out in the frontline at every party, literally getting to know the music by taking notes on paper while looking at the records played by heroes of his like Richie Hawtin and Daniel Bell. This was how a DJ to whom adjectives like “incendiary” and “faultless” have been attributed with stunning frequency was formed. And for him it all starts with a clear intention, defined by himself as the desire of making his audience remember, even days after hearing him play, “shit, he played this sick track!”.  But, in our opinion, Patrick Russell´s presence will be remembered for a lot longer than just a few days.


Evigt Mörker

If we tell you that the translation of the name Evigt Mórker ends up in the phrase “eternal darkness”, you might get the idea that we are in the presence of someone making depressive music, much more than something that makes us move on a dancefloor. And in fact, there are gloomy and introspective characteristics in Evigt Mórker´s music, and it´s extremely hypnotic and meditative qualities can create a psychologic effect of endlessness. But the mysterious swede also displays a special ability for making even the most monochrome soundscape become filled with light and color. Entwined into his vaguely trancey techno tapestries, there always hopeful and uplifting atmospheres, or spectral voices that seem to come from above. Through releases on his homonymous label or labels as fundamental in deep techno as Northern Electronics and Semantica, Evigt Mórkerhas made it a lot easier to say that techno can be an extremely beautiful musical form. To dance and contemplate.


Gabi von Dub

A poet once wrote, “we are the music-makers, we are the dreamers of dreams”. Gabi Von Dub is a music dreamer and a dream-maker. He seems eternally in awe of sounds and of people and is a self-confessed “musical sponge”. The almost juvenile enthusiasm with which he looks at the universe of sound and his belief in music´s ability to bring down the barriers people build around themselves, through the sublimation of the ego and the expansion of conscience, have kept him going since 99 on a tortuous path, travelled with the passion and certainty of one who knows his soul is in the right place. His visit to Lux is one of the most special waypoints of this journey. Behind him are the wide open spaces of Boom Festival or the tunnel at Gare Porto, the Quest4Goa chiil-outs and the experiments in dub of the Arctic Dub, where he´s been A&R and label manager since 2014. Carrying with him one of the most thorough music baggages you´ll find in a national DJ, Gabi applies that vastness of knowledge to an uncanny skill in adapting to different contexts but also take them further, defying the little boxes where we tend to put music. It took it´s time, but finally, the fractal-kaleidoscopic vision of Gabi Von Dub arrives at Lux.
