A Propeller é um projeto editorial que nasce com a Hélice – Fotógrafos que usam a fotografia, com coordenação de Sofia Silva. Complementando a atividade da Hélice, a ‘Propeller’ surge com o desígnio de investigar os diferentes atributos associados à estética fotográfica, no sentido de pensar sobre aqueles que são os paradigmas fundadores do medium, mas também para integrar e partilhar a produção mais contemporânea, dando especial atenção a obras que desafiam o que se entende como ‘campo de expansão da fotografia’. Com duas edições por ano, a Propeller apresentou-se ao público em Junho de 2017, com a publicação do número 0 (zero), dedicado ao ‘pornográfico’. Apesar de ser um projeto editorial, a Propeller assume parâmetros pouco habituais para uma publicação periódica, a cada edição assumindo um formato singular, determinado pela temática que se propõe investigar, constituindo-se mais como um livro de artista do que como uma revista. Na publicação, a Propeller conta com o apoio da ‘Stolen Books’, sob direção de Luís Alegre, que se junta à equipa da Hélice para pensar sobre esse campo indefinido que une a revista ao livro de artista. Quando escolhemos dedicar a edição no1 da Propeller à mancha,fomos movidos por um desejo de pensar sobre fotografia abstracta. Acima de tudo queríamos investigar a natureza morfológica da fotografia, não só no que diz respeito à matéria, mas sobretudo no que transcende essa mesma matéria, transformando a fotografia numa entidade artística. Por um lado, interessava-nos pensar sobre uma fotografia menos dependente das linhas que contornam os elementos universalmente codificados – figuras humanas, elementos naturais, etc. –, por outro lado, queríamos aventurar-nos nas profundezas do mecanismo de representação fotográfico e, aí localizados, pensar como a mancha absoluta da fotografia se constitui: como é que a fotografia é imagem? Como é que a fotografia é imagem a partir de, com e para além dos elementos que nela se imprimem? - Propeller was born to promote the space given to photographic expression, but above all to think about the limits of its aesthetics, aiming at sharing original content. In addition to the publication of portfolios and visual essays by authors recognized by the public, at Propeller we’re focused on sharing new perspectives, that somehow potentiate a critical approach to the field of photography. With each issue, Propeller embraces the challenge posed by one of the many paradigms of photographic aesthetics, inviting a diverse set of authors to jointly prepare a singular proposal on the theme in question. To this end, Propeller also hopes to be a space of critical mass creation, sharing essays, visual poetry and other disruptive works. With a semiannual periodicity, Propeller is a project by HÉLICE‘s team – Duarte Amaral Netto, João Paulo Serafim, Rodrigo Tavarela Peixoto and Valter Ventura – coordinated by Sofia Silva. When we chose to dedicate Propeller’s edition #1 to the stain, we were impelled by a desire to think about abstract photography. Overall, we wanted to investigate the morphological nature of photography, not only in respect to the materialsubstance, but most importantly in respect to that which transcends the matter, turning photography into an artistical entity. On the one hand, we wanted to consider the kind of photography that is less dependent on the lines that define universal codes – human figures, natural elements, etc. – on the other hand, we wanted to venture into the depths of the photographic mechanism of representation and, once situated there, to question how the absolute stain of photography is formed: how does a picture become an image? How does a photograph become an image from, with and beyond the elements that it registers?
