DOMINGO, 17 DE DEZEMBRO, ÀS 18H l ENTRADA LIVRE Os desenhos de Sei Miguel são um rumor vago na memória do meio artístico português. Das episódicas ilustrações no JL à aparição fugaz das suas obras informais nas páginas da Colóquio Artes, a obra gráfica de Sei foi, no mínimo, discreta no panorama do final da década de 1970. Talvez pelo carácter pontual da sua visibilidade, talvez pela falta de um contexto apropriado, certo é que, da década de oitenta em diante, o seu trabalho nesta área submergiu para águas profundas e não mais voltou à superfície. Isso não significou, contudo, que o exercício do desenho abandonasse o quotidiano de Sei Miguel que, ao mesmo tempo que estabelecia o seu lugar como uma das referências da música improvisada portuguesa, o alimentou paulatinamente e sobre ele foi vertendo a exigência crítica que lhe conhecemos. Os desenhos reunidos neste Livro das Imagens vêm, portanto, carregados dos mesmos rigor, contundência e economia expressiva que marcam a sonoridade de Sei Miguel. Na sua singeleza, estes são desenhos “do meio da rua”, como “do meio da rua” é a sua música, não só no sentido em que não se querem nem se deixam nunca abrigar em casa alguma, mas também no sentido em que foram criados para viver e fazer o seu efeito nesse lugar de comunhão e encontro que é o espaço público. Por paradoxal que possa parecer, estes são desenhos pop – tão pop quanto aquele ideal que, nos anos de 1960, imaginou o encontro ecuménico da cultura, o lugar da confluência de géneros e da miscigenação de tendências, onde todos os signos conviveriam, por fim, no terreno comum da sua livre interpotenciação e da democratização dos seus sentidos. E assim como na utopia pop, nos desenhos de Sei Miguel convivem títulos e grafemas, formas reconhecíveis e outras nem tanto, inscrições típicas da BD e aproximações geométricas, alusões a figuras da cultura de massas e citações da mais criteriosa erudição, referência a eventos transversais da nossa história comum e inclusão de episódios potencialmente autobiográficos – tudo isto sob a luz inclemente de um alto contraste e na corrente de uma linha que não hesita. A sugestão é, contudo, a mais determinante das características deste Livro das Imagens. O que nele se adivinha é tão importante quanto o que nele se mostra, o que faz da tensão entre o dito e não dito, entre a expressão e o seu reverso, o mais poderoso ligamento da sua unidade. _ Sei Miguel's drawings are like a vague rumor in the memory of the Portuguese artistic milieu. From the episodic illustrations in Jornal de Letras to the fleeting appearance of his informal works on the pages of Colóquio Artes, the graphic work of Sei was, at the very least, a discreet presence in the panorama of the late 1970s. Perhaps because of its timely visibility, perhaps because of the lack of an appropriate context for it, the fact is that, from the 1980s onwards, his work in this area submerged into deep waters and did not resurface. This doesn’t mean, however, that drawing disappeared altogether from Sei’s daily life. Quite the contrary: as he was striving to conquer his place as one of the utmost references of Portuguese improvised music, he kept on practicing it thoroughly with the critical demand he applied to everything else. The drawings assembled in Livro das Imagens (Book of Images) are loaded with the same rigor, forcefulness and expressive economy that characterize Sei Miguel’s sound. In their singleness, these are drawings ''from the middle of the street'', as ''from the middle of the street'' is Sei’s music, not only in the sense that they do not want to (and never let themselves be) sheltered, but also in the sense that they were created to live and act in this place of communion and encounter that is the public space. Paradoxical as it may seem, these are pop drawings - as pop as the ideal that in the 1960s envisioned the ecumenical encounter of culture, the place of the confluence of genres and the mixing of artistic positions, where all signs would finally inhabit the common ground of their free interpotentiation and the democratization of their senses. And as with the pop utopia, Sei Miguel’s drawings are filled with expressions and graphemes, recognizable forms and others not so much, comic’s typical inscriptions and geometrical shapes, allusions to figures of mass culture and quotations from the most judicious erudition, reference to events of our common history and hints on potentially autobiographical episodes - all of these placed under the inclement light of high black and white contrast and traced in the current of a line that does not hesitate. Suggestion is, however, the most determinant of the characteristics of this Livro das Imagens. What is shown in it is as important as what needs to be guessed, which makes the tension between said and unsaid, between expression and its reverse, the most powerful bond of its unity.
