Lisbon International Book Club session at Bookshop Bivar.

TOPIC

The theme for this event will be how death and dying are presented in literature. We will talk about death in the broadest sense of the term, considering concrete, physical deaths as well as symbolic deaths. In literature, is death always connected with sadness and melancholy? Or could we find also some doses of humour, irony and laughter associated with it?

Please, bring to the meeting one of the most interesting literary passages/quotes about this topic that you have found in a piece of writing and that you would like to share with us. Since we will be having two guest writers at the event, participants' contributions will be limited to 3 minutes.

EVENT DESCRIPTION:

As a starter, writers Debra di Blasi and Sam Witt will read some excerpts from some of their works. Then, we will have a regular Book Club session featuring peoples' contributions and comments. And, of course, Debra and Sam will stay with us and participate in the discussion!

GUEST WRITERS:

SAM WITT is the author of three poetry collections, including Everlasting Quail, winner of the Katherine Nason Bakeless Award, and Little Domesday Clock, whose “visionary text occupies every corner of the imagination with code, data, errata, erasures, subtweets, footnotes, actions and redactions.” He is Associate Professor of Creative Writing in Massachusetts and a former poetry editor and journalist.

DEBRA DI BLASI is multimedia, multi-genre author of seven books including Drought, which won the Thorpe Menn Literary Excellence Book Award, and The Jiri Chronicles, winner of an &NOW Award. Her writing has been adapted to film, radio and audio. She is a former U.S. book publisher, editor, art critic and educator living in Portugal.

NOTE:

Suggested donation to cover the expenses (water, electricity etc.) of Bookshop Bivar: 2 Euros.
