Oscar Mulero (oficial) Nunca como em 2017 se ouviu tão alto, e vindo de tantos, aquilo que uns quantos afirmavam em surdina há anos: Oscar Mulero é um dos maiores de sempre do techno. Um podcast para o Resident Advisor e a honra de um set de fecho (de 12 horas!) no Berghain deram os remates finais numa questão que já devia estar resolvida há muito tempo. São distinções e elogios mais que justos que chegam finalmente a uma das carreiras mais coerentes e consistentes que encontrarão no techno. E em tempos em que os fenómenos musicais se globalizam com tanta rapidez, é preciso não esquecer que quando Mulero começou, na sua Madrid natal, há mais de 20 anos, a comunicação entre as diversas cenas mundiais do techno que então despontavam quase não existia, e Madrid era uma cidade absolutamente periférica para este som. Ao longo de dezenas de EPs e álbuns principalmente editados nas suas labels Warm-Up e Pole Group, Oscar construiu paulatinamente um caminho totalmente seu, absolutamente invulnerável a modas e em que a mudança progressiva de um som mais duro e loopy, para um som mais mental, se deu com naturalidade e por sua exclusiva vontade. Quando se juntam num só DJ talento natural, capacidade de trabalho, profissionalismo e constante vontade de se auto-desafiar, como em Oscar Mulero, estamos perante um fenómeno. O espírito do “Mulerismo” está de volta ao Lux. Shifted Algures no princípio desta década, houve uma notória “migração”, por assim dizer, de artistas da cena UK-bass/Jungle para a estética techno. Embora só em 2014 tenha admitido ser um desses “migrantes” (era integrante do trio de d’n’b Commix), Shifted é um dos mais bem sucedidos artistas a fazer essa transição. Na verdade, talvez só mesmo Blawan e o recém-falecido Marcus Intalex/Trevino estejam ao mesmo nível na forma natural como vestiram a sua pele techno e na qualidade do material produzido. O que também é possível concluir do seu arco de carreira é que dificilmente Guy Brewer ficará por aqui no que a produção diz respeito, dado que o seu som está cada vez mais aberto e experimental. Mas enquanto se entretém em devaneios vários, podemos nós desfrutar, nas pistas e nos nossos gira-discos, da sonoridade e mente de um DJ e produtor que, seja em que “escola” for que aprendeu a produzir e misturar, nos revela um dos mais detalhados e meticulosos nomes a operar no techno do momento, um prodigioso mestre de texturas, ambientes e sound-design. Escutar Shifted é como ver o monólito de 2001-Odisseia No Espaço a avançar lenta e inexoravelmente na nossa direcção numa pista. A podcast for Resident Advisor and the honor of a closing set (12 hours!) at Berghain put the final touches on an issue that should´ve been settled long ago. It´s compliments and distinctions that are completely earned and finally grace one of the most coherent and consistent careers you will find in techno. And in times where global phenomena happen in no time, we must not forget that when Mulero started out in his home town of Madrid, over 20 years ago. There was little to no communication between the different techno scenes around the world, and Madrid was an absolutely peripheric spot in this context. Throughout dozens of EPs and albums released mainly on his Warm-Up e Pole Group labels, Oscar patiently built a totally unique path of his own, absolutely impervious to fashion and in which the progressive change from a tough, loop-based sound to a more heady concoction, happened naturally and totally of his own will. When you put together in one single DJ, natural abilities, work ethics, professionalism and a constant need for self-defiance, like you get in Oscar Mulero, you get a phenomenon. The spirit of “Mulerismo” is back to Lux. SHIFTED Somewhere in the beginning of this decade, there was a notorious “migration”, so to speak, of artists from the UK-bass/Jungle scene to the techno aesthetic. Even though only in 2014 did he admit to be one of those “migrants” (he was part of the d’n’b trio Commix), Shifted is one of the most well succeeded artists in that transition. In fact, maybe only Blawan and recently departed Marcus Intalex/Trevino are at the same level in the natural way in which they adopted the techno skin and in the quality of their output. What you can also gather from his career arc is that Guy Brewer will hardly remain in techno when it comes to production, since his sound is getting more and more open and experimental. But while he stays busy in his many ventures, it´s up to us to enjoy, on the dancefloor and on our turntables, the mind and sonority of a DJ and producer that, no matter in which school he learned his tricks, are revealing of one the most meticulous and detail-focused techno operators right now, a prodigious master of texture, ambience and sound-design. Listening to Shifted is like seeing the monolith from ‘2001’ advancing slowly and inexorably towards you on a dancefloor.
