O termo Frauenzimmerstunde é uma (típica) construção alemã a partir de cinco palavras: Frauen, Zimmer, Stunde, Frauenzimmer e Zimmerstunde. As primeiras três palavras significam mulheres, sala e hora, respetivamente. As duas últimas resultam de construções. Frauenzimmer é um termo que literalmente significa sala de mulheres. No século XV, foi usado em países escandinavos e germânicos para denominar os aposentos da rainha, incluindo as pessoas e os próprios quartos reais. A partir do século XVII, Frauenzimmer também foi utilizado para designar individualmente as mulheres e, após o movimento sufragista, durante a passagem de século, tornou-se num termo pejorativo. Zimmerstunde é um antigo termo germano-austríaco utilizado para designar o horário em que a empregada de quarto de hotel poderia se retirar para o seu quarto no sótão. A primeira exposição individual de Aglaia Konrad em Portugal transforma o espaço do Lumiar Cité num Frauenzimmer, que dialoga com a história das intervenções arquitetónicas na galeria pelos seus colegas artistas, predominantemente masculinos. Frauenzimmer constitui o pano de fundo para o seu trabalho de fotografia a partir de espaços modelados pelo homem - desde pedreiras até às intensidades urbanas de arquiteturas e construções com a sua inerente materialidade, bem como noções de monumentalidade em disciplinas como a arquitetura ou a fotografia. Konrad mina a formalidade na fotografia iconográfica de arquitetura, desenvolvendo um estilo idiossincrático que lhe permite desencadear, através da justaposição de imagens, subtis ressonâncias psicológicas, sociais e políticas. Coincidindo com a inauguração da exposição e em colaboração com a editora Roma Publications (Amesterdão), Aglaia Konrad lança o livro de artista SCHAUBUCH: Skulptur, que apresenta fotografias realizadas em museus europeus entre 2010 e 2017, com esculturas de diferentes épocas e contextos nas suas formas museológicas de apresentação. Aglaia Konrad (Áustria, 1960) vive e trabalha em Bruxelas. Lecciona na LUCA School of Arts (Bruxelas). A sua obra foi apresentada internacionalmente, em museus e bienais, incluindo: “The Brutalism Appreciation Society”, Hardware Medienkunstverein (Dortmund, 2017); “EMINENT DOMAINS (proper names)”, Robert Miller Gallery (Nova Iorque, 2015); “Hollein”, MAK (Viena, 2014); “In the First Circle”, Fundació Antoni Tàpies (Barcelona, 2011); “Gazes of Architecture on the Body”, Tokyo Wonder Site e Museum of Contemporary Art (Kumamoto, 2010); Shanghai Biennale (2000); “Cities on the Move” (Bordéus, Nova Iorque, Londres, Helsínquia, Viena, 1998/99) e documenta X (Kassel, 1997). Entre as recentes exposições individuais destacam-se: “From A to K”, M-Museum Leuven (2016); “Das Haus (ausgestellt)”, Fotohof (Salzburgo, 2014); “Apparent Positions – Aglaia Konrad: Concrete and Samples”, Sainsbury Gallery (Norwich, 2012); e “Concrete and Samples”, com Armin Linke, Museum für Gegenwarskunst (Siegen, 2009). Frauenzimmerstunde, a (typical) German construction of five words: Frauen, Zimmer, Stunde, Frauenzimmer and Zimmerstunde. The first three words mean women, room and hour. The last two are constructions: Frauenzimmer is a term that literally means women's room. It was used in Scandinavian and Germanic countries in the 15th century for a queen’s household including all the people and the actual chambers. From the 17th century the term was also used for individual females and after the suffragettes’ movement during the turn of the century Frauenzimmer became a pejorative term. Zimmerstunde is an old Austrian German term for the daily hour during which a hotel chamber maid could retire to her own chamber in the attic. Aglaia Konrad’s first solo exhibition in Portugal transforms the Lumiar Cité space into a Frauenzimmer, which engages with the gallery’s history of architectural interventions by Konrad’s predominantly male artist colleagues. Frauenzimmer constitutes a backdrop for her photography work on man-made spaces – from quarries to the urban intensities of architectures and constructions with their inherent materiality, as well as notions of the monumental in architecture and in photography itself. Konrad undermines the formal, iconographic photography of architecture, having developed an idiosyncratic style that allows the artist to trigger, through her juxtaposition of images, subtle psychological resonances, and the social and the political in the situations encountered. To coincide with her exhibition and in collaboration with Roma Publications in Amsterdam, Aglaia Konrad will be launching her artist’s book SCHAUBUCH: Skulptur, in which she presents photographs taken between 2010 and 2017 in museums throughout Europe, featuring sculptures from different times and contexts with their museological forms of presentation.
