Moldadas pela riqueza sónica da baía de São Francisco, onde cresceram, e pelo faro musical dos pais, ambos artistas (a mãe escritora e o pai escultor), as gémeas Jacquelyn & Kathryn Smith (nomes artísticos Jacky Sommer & DatKat) ouviam deslumbradas, nos 80s, new wave e post punk, hip hop, soul, jazz. Mais tarde, Herbie Hancock, Paul Hardcastle e Kraftwerk conduzem-nas à paixão que se provaria mais duradoura de todas: a música electrónica.

Nos anos 90 em LA tropeçam na residência de Eddie Amador e, nas suas próprias palavras, ' a vida começa a fazer sentido'. Inspiradas pelo pulsar house, a destreza techno e o calor soul, compram equipamento de DJ e começam as suas colecções de discos - que até hoje andam de mãos dadas, não tivessem as duas irmãs uma sensibilidade musical também gémea. Foi na primeira década dos anos 2000 que começaram a tocar regularmente em clubes de Nova Iorque, para onde entretanto se tinham mudado, partilhando cabines com artistas como Theo Parrish, Kenny Larkin, King Britt ou Gilles Peterson. Em 2004 começam o programa de rádio 'Analog Soul' que duraria 5 anos e lhes viria a garantir um lugar no firmamento da house americana.

Hoje continuam a dar o mote no underground: deixaram-no claro no Boiler Room das Discwoman do ano passado e vão dando as pistas que todos procuramos em sets profundos e honestos um pouco por todo o planeta. Duas vozes vitais - duas mulheres não brancas - que cantam em uníssono o gospel original da música de dança. Ouvi-las atentamente é a única boa escolha.

Influenced by the sonic richness of the San Francisco bay that saw them grow up, and by their parents' (both artists: their mom a writer, their dad a sculptor) musical taste, the twins Jacquelyn & Kathryn Smith (artist names Jacky Sommer & DatKat) would listen, in the 80s, to new wave and post punk, hip hop, soul and jazz. Later on, Herbie Hancock, Paul Hardcastle and Kraftwerk would lead them to the love that would prove most everlasting: electronic music.

In the 90s, they stumbled upon Eddie Amador's residency in LA and in their own words, 'life started to make sense'. Inspired by the house groove, techno dexterity and the warmth of soul, they bought their own DJ equipment and started working on their record collections - and those go hand in hand to this day, as these two sisters' music sensibility is twin, too. The first decade of the 2000s saw them starting to play regularly in New York, where they'd moved to, sharing the DJ booth with the likes of Theo Parrish, Kenny Larkin, King Britt and Gilles Peterson. In 2004 they started the radio show 'Analog Soul' that would last 5 years and secure them a place in the american house music hall of fame.

Today they're still setting the tone on the global underground: they made it clear on Discwoman's NYC Boiler Room and they keep giving us the clues we're all looking for through the deep, honest  sets they play all over the globe. Two vital voices - two non-white  women - that sing in unison dance music's original gospel. To listen to them very closely is the only wise choice.
