Ah, Detroit. A cidade dos motores, que para muitos evoca automaticamente três itens: automóveis, Motown, Techno. Só que os Detroit Swindle trocaram-nos um bocado as voltas com o nome, portanto vamos lá começar por esclarecer a coisa: a dupla forma-se em 2011 e é constituída por dois holandeses, Lars Dales e Maarten Smeets. Lars programava alguns clubes em Amesterdão e viu-se forçado a despedir Maarten por este tocar música demasiado “underground”. A relação profissional podia ter dado para o torto – como até podia ser bem mais natural – mas ao invés disso descobriram que partilhavam o amor pela Motown, Hip-Hop e música House dos seus primórdios.
Os três amores que os uniram são três grandes características que transpiram na sua música. Irrequietos, trataram de fundar a Heist Recordings como escaparate não só para as suas próprias criações mas também para artistas como Nebraska, Nachtbraker ou Adesse Versions. Remisturaram gigantes como Seven Davis Jr, Chet Faker ou Hercules & Love Affair e editaram também em selos essenciais como a Tsuba ou a Freerange. Curioso, para dois tipos que quando começaram nem tinham a certeza se a música que fazia valia a pena – até que um dia receberam um email com uma proposta de edição.
Mas na cabine, como funciona a dinâmica dos dois? Bom, garantem que conhecerem-se muito bem e às subtis diferenças de gostos e estilos de mistura ajuda a que se entrosem bastante bem. Com a proliferação de “back to backs” improvisados entre artistas muitas vezes bastante dissemelhantes, esta é uma garantia que estaremos bem entregues. Das malas da dupla irão certamente saltar temas de base orgânica a evocar timbres universalmente familiares, samples alterados até mais não (ou, aqui ou ali, um ou outro mais óbvios), muito Funk, muito Soul, muito alma toda mesclada sempre com a base House, House e mais House a unir a história toda e a fazer-nos render à diversão na pista. Oh, Detroit. The motor city which for many evokes immediately three items: cars, Motown, Techno. But so it happens that Detroit Swindle threw us a bit of a curveball with their name, so let’s start by setting things straight. The duo is constituted by two Dutchmen, Lars Dale and Maarten Smeets. Lars programmed some club nights in Amsterdam and had to fire Maarten because he was playing a bit too of an underground sound. Their professional relationship could have suffered – as would be normal – but instead the two found out they shared a love for Motown, Hip-Hop, and early House Music.
These three passions which brought them together would be three great characteristics that transpie in their music. Restless, they founded Heist Recordings as a platform not only for their own releases but also for artists such as Nebraska, Nachtbraker or Adesse Versions. They remixed giants such as Seven Davis Jr, Chet Faker or Hercules & Love Affair and released on essential labels like Tsuba or Freerange. A curious thing, for two guys who weren’t even sure their music was worthwhile – until one day a release proposal landed on their inbox.
But how does the duo’s dynamic work in the booth? Well, they guarantee that knowing each other very well, as well as their subtle differences in taste and style helps them blend together very well, With the current amalgamation of improvised back to backs between artists who sometimes are at completely different ends of the musical spectrum, this is a reassurance we will be in good hands. From their bags it’s certain that tracks with organic bases will get played, evoking universally known timbres and ultra manipulated samples (ok – some well known ones as well!), a lot of Funk, a lot of Soul, all brought together by House Music and forcing us to surrender on the dancefloor.
