Despite global warming, Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" is more popular than ever. In this Project Vivaldi seasons will alternate with a corresponding composition from Astor Piazzolla's, Four Seasons Suite, making for fascinating comparisons.
Antonio Vivaldi's "Four seasons" written around 1725 are certainly among the best-loved classical pieces of all time. They represent the cycle of life in a changing mix of moods symbolized by the seasons of the year.
Argentinian composer Astor Piazzola, best known for his tango music, towards the twilight of his life and career (in the years 1964-1970) wrote 4 seasonal pieces as well, but in contrast to the Vivaldi set, they were not originally meant to be performed together.
While of course very different from the baroque counterparts, one is surprised how superbly the different moods are reflected and are actually very complementary between the pieces: a true dialogue of two geniuses separated by almost 250 years!
