Recondite (live) Lorenz Brunner é um firme favorito de muitos e muitos que passam a nossa porta do Cais da Pedra e entram para a pista coroada por um céu de luzes brilhantes. Recondite não é novidade entre nós, e já era hora merecida de curar uma Green Ray, trazendo alguns dos seus favoritos e dando-nos a conhecer ainda mais do seu imaginário musical. Já esteve como convidado numa de Âme – também ele tem uma forte ligação à Innervisions, tal como o seu convidado Marcus Worgull – mas vem agora brilhar como, digamos, patrão. Recondite conquistou gradualmente mais e mais fãs – ok, hoje já podemos dizer “massas!” – com um Techno que, longe de soar bruto ou seco, arrancava melancolia e emoção até aos corações mais empedernidos, fazendo-o não com as fórmulas do costume mas apresentando algo fresco e próprio que chamou atenções mundo inteiro. Apaixonado pela natureza desde criança, talvez seja a prova viva que o Techno não tem de sair da dureza dos subúrbios abandonados e de fábricas abandonadas, mas que as máquinas podem soar tão futuristas como orgânicas, e que uma tarola pode evocar uma árvore seca a cair numa floresta. Há coisas comuns que nos unem enquanto humanos e talvez Recondite consiga relembra-las tão bem sem precisar de usar forçosamente a linguagem falada ou os clichês tonais. Como alguém que aprendeu a sua arte praticamente sozinho, algo muito forte há de querer brotar cá pra fora, com todo o ímpeto para ser partilhado para o mundo. E Lorenz está a conseguir. A sorte é toda nossa de podermos testemunhar o processo a acontecer. Lawrence / Official Não, não é o da Arábia – desculpem a má piada. É mesmo Peter Kersten, dado a conhecer ao mundo como Lawrence, uma das mentes brilhantes por detrás da Dial (editora que por sua vez se desdobra em Laid) e que se recusa, quase à laia de manifesto, a ser compartimentada em géneros ou subgéneros ou outras coisas mais dadas a imaginações pequenas do que a visões de futuro. Parte da cena vibrante de Hamburgo nos anos 90 (onde aliás continua), é importante esclarecer que nem sempre a Alemanha foi sinónimo de Techno em todo o lado, como se algum gigante autocolante tivesse sido colado por cima do mapa. Em Hamburgo, Lawrence e outros nossos conhecidos como Dixon escavavam os discos do melhor Deep House americano da época, como Theo Parrish, Nick Holder ou Herbert. E em 2000, quando concretiza em editora os gostos que fora acumulando, aprendendo e refinando, Lawrence carrega em si uma espécie de paleta musical que muito poucas vezes é passível de ser repetida em mais alguém. Único, sapiente, e com uma vida inteira dedicada mais a fazer do que a aparecer, ele não é um herói esquecido – é um herói amado, amado pelos certos, pelos que sabem e pelos que se rendem totalmente apenas aos que têm algo que os faz brilhar de forma diferente, mais distinta, mais verdadeira. E se o vosso coração ainda não tem um recanto dedicado a Lawrence, preparem-se: esta Green Ray pode bem vir a fazer-vos ficar apaixonados. Música para ouvidos que sabem o que querem, tenham lá a idade que tenham. História viva. Presente. Marcus Worgull Ultimamente, Marcus Worgull tem andado mais ocupado como Vermont – projecto que o liga a Danilo Plessow (Motor City Drum Ensemble). Mas em boa hora chega em nome próprio a este portal de entrada sónica Lisboa fora: já tínhamos saudades. O bom aluno da Innervisions adapta-se camaleónicamente às pistas diante das quais se propõe, mas nem por isso deixa de ter uma espinha dorsal bem forte e não andar a saltitar de moda em moda. Não é de admirar que calce como uma luva, num alinhamento desta Green Ray tão díspar e tão cuidado. Não vamos perder muito tempo a tentar cativar-vos com os seus trabalhos de estúdio, um pouco de Google (tentem!) leva-vos directamente a algum bom tempo de regalo na escuta. É como DJ que nos vem encher as medidas e é aí, com ele na cabine, que podemos esperar todo o ambiente de sonho acordado que associamos à editora-mãe e, por conseguinte, a Marcus. Não são todos os DJs que conseguem fazer da subtileza e do detalhe uma mistura que nos faz perder ali em cima do chão de madeira, mas quando dermos por nós é provável que andemos a rodopiar entre as vozes que nos sussurram ao ouvido, quase em forma de embalo, e os sintetizadores que nos agarram de vez o cérebro e não mais largam, com as melodias certas. Primeiro em pezinhos de lã, depois em visões do paraíso. Roland Appel Roland Appel é perentório em dizer que a música o escolheu a ele, e que desde novo o fascínio pelo ritmo ditou muito da sua vida. Desde baterias improvisadas com utensílios de cozinha até se chegar a um estúdio de gravação profissional ainda vai um bocadinho, mas neste caso quase que podemos falar em predestinação. Numa odisseia entre o Drum n’ Bass, o House, o Techno, Roland navegou muitos mares até encontrar um som próprio e que lhe deu aptidão para ser uma espécie de homem dos sete ofícios sónicos, não só baterista como DJ, produtor apontado às pistas e também a trabalhos para vídeo. Uff! Mergulhado na Música, Roland já fez parte dos jazzísticos Fauna Flash e Truby Trio, mas acabou por chegar às massas em versão House. Difícil descrever o que nos vai trazer até Santa Apolónia, mas a certeza é que podemos esperar escolhas frescas e fora dos limites chatos e quadrados. Um veterano a precisar de ser descoberto, redescoberto e, obviamente, muito bem dançado. RNDM Mais um membro desta Green Ray a sair do colectivo Dial / Laid, não é todos os dias que ouvimos falar de um DJ que em pequeno queria ser... bispo. Mas é verdade. Quando Oliver Kargl – RNDM – era acólito, parecia já ter a visão traçada para um futuro religioso. É certo que acabou por não adoptar os paramentos, mas é inegável que a música pode suscitar experiências religiosas, ou sê-la por inteiro ela mesma. Austríaco, colecionador de discos, influências díspares, Hamburgo, uma atitude relaxada e humilde. Honestidade. Ele que com Efdemin é Pigon, mui interessante dupla que põe o “profundo” em “Deep”, anda por aí a solo a espalhar o pó do vinil e de que maneira. Um balanço sem preconceito de House Music para nos fazer rodopiar e abraçar o melhor daquilo que podemos retirar dos momentos passados nas pistas de dança. Cada um saberá de si, mas por umas horas RNDM vai saber de todos. Não vamos estar só bem entregues, vamos estar bem guiados. E por vezes, um bom guia é tudo o que precisamos. Uchi Bom, vejamos: desde logo de início na sua biografia, Uchi declara-se como uma DJ que tem uma tendência especial para o experimentalismo na música. Algo refrescante e que se enquadra num dos âmbitos destas noites do raio verde, a de saltitarmos entre pisos e descobrirmos algo ou alguém a que de outra maneira não seríamos expostos. Com o objectivo de expor o público a emoções seja através do trabalho de estúdio ou o que faz em cima duma cabine de um clube, Uchi fala como alguém que sabe o que quer. E não só fala – que isso de falar é fácil – mas efectivamente executa. Começou aos 19 anos a pôr música na rádio da faculdade, um dia um amigo enviou um tema seu a Recondite, o tema foi editado e... o resto é história? Uma óptima história que vai continuar aqui por Santa Apolónia. E os próximos capítulos soam tão bonitos como a música que nos dá: talvez um dia, depois da reforma da vida exigente de andar pelo mundo a musicar noites, vá para uma cabana na floresta, ler e fazer bandas sonoras. Recondite is not new among us, and it's about time he got to curate a Green Ray night, bringing some of his favorites and share even more of his musical imagination. Having previously been a guest of Âme – he also has a strong connection to the Innervisions label, as fellow Marcus Worgull -but now comes back ready to shine as, let’s say, the night’s boss. Recondite won gradually more and more fans - ok, today we can already say "masses!" – with a Techno that, far from sounding raw or dry, evoked melancholy and emotion even for those with the most stony hearts, not with the usual formulas but with something fresh and his methods drew attention worldwide. In love with nature since he was a kid, maybe he's living proof that Techno doesn't have to reflect the hardness of the abandoned suburbs and abandoned factories, but that machines can sound as futuristic as organic, and a snare drum can evoke a tree falling in a forest. There are common things that bind us together as humans and Recondite elicits them so well without need forcefully use spoken language or tonal cliches. As someone who learned his art virtually alone, something very strong is wanting to sprout out of him, with all the will to be shared with the world. And Lorenz is certainly doing it right. We’re really talking about Peter Kersten, better known as Lawrence, on of the genious minds behinds Dial (the label that eventually double as Laid) and refuses to, almost in a manifesto-like way, to be pigeonholed in genres or subgenres or other types of things better suited to small minds than to visions of the future. A part of the vibrant scene of Hamburg in the 90s (where in fact he continues), it is important to clarify that Germany was not always synonymous with Techno everywhere, as if some giant sticker had been pasted over the map. In Hamburg, Lawrence and others such as Dixon dug the best American Deep House, like Theo Parrish, Nick Holder or Herbert. Having started Dial in 2000, with the taste he was accumulating, learning and refining, Lawrence carries in himself a kind of musical palette that very few times is likely to be repeated in anyone else. Unique, knowledgeable, and with a lifetime dedicated more to do than to be under a spotlight, he's not a forgotten hero – he is a beloved hero, beloved by the right ones, by those who know and those who surrender fully only to those who have something that makes them shine differently , more distinctly, effectively in a more real way. The only way. Marcus Worgull Lately, Marcus Worgull has been busier as Vermont – the project that connects him with Danilo Plessow (Motor City Drum Ensemble. But it’s about time we welcomed him back to the sonic entry portal to Lisbon: we certainly missed him already. The Innervisions alumni adapts seamlessly to the dancefloors on which he proposes to play, but has a strong backbone and is not one to keep jumping on bandwagons. It's no wonder that he fits like a glove on this Green Ray lineup. Let's not waste too much time trying to captivate you with his studio work, a bit of Google (try it!) takes you directly to plenty of good options to explore. He’ll be coming over as a DJ and it is there with him in the booth that we can expect the entire “waking dream” state we associate the famous label he’s connected to and, consequently, with Marcus himself. Not all DJs can mix with the finesse and detail that make us lose ourselves on top of our wooden floors, but next we are likely to find ourselves spinning among the soulful vocals whispering in our ears, almost cradling us with the synthesizers which grab our brains to no longer let go. First step by step, then… full on visions of paradise. Roland Appel Roland Appel is very straightforward to say that music chose him, his fascination with rhythm dictated much of his life. From improvised drumkits with kitchen utensils when he was a kid up until getting to a professional recording studio goes a long way, but in this case we can speak almost about predestination. On an odyssey between Drum n'bass, House and Techno, Roland sailed many seas to find his own sound which gave him the ability to be the kind of man that does a bit of everything, not only as drummer, a DJ and a producer not only for the dancefloors but also for video work. Oomph! Steeped in music, Roland was part of the jazzy Fauna Flash and Truby Trio, but eventually came to the big crowds in his Housier version. It’s hard to describe what he will bring to Lux, but rest assured we can expect fresh choices, way out of boring boundaries. A veteran in need of being discovered, rediscovered and, obviously, very well danced. RNDM Another Member of this Green Ray straight out of the Dial/Laid family, it's not every day we hear about a DJ who as a little boy wanted to be ... a Bishop. But it's true. When Oliver Kargl – RNDM - was an altar boy, he seemed to have already drawn a vision for a religious future. It is true that did not adopt the church vestments, but there is no doubt that music can give rise to religious experiences, or be one itself. An Austrian in Hamburg, a record collector with disparate influences, a man with a relaxed, honest and humble attitude. With Efdemin he is Pigon, a very interesting power duo that puts the "profound" in "Deep", but solo he goes around the world to shake the dust out of his vinyl. A deliverer of unprejudiced House grooves for dancing and prancing, allowing us to give ourselves up the best activities enjoyed on a dancefloor. Each one will know about him or heself, but for a few hours RNDM will know about us all. We're not just well taken care of, we'll be well guided. And sometimes, a good guide is all you need. Uchi Well, let's see: since the beginning of her biography, Uchi declares herself as a DJ that has a special tendency to experimentalism in music. Something refreshing and that fits in one of the features of these Green Ray nights, of going between floors and we finding something or someone that otherwise would not have been be exposed to. With the aim of subjecting the public to emotions, be it through her work or through DJing, Uchi speaks as someone who knows what she wants. And it’s not just speaking - it is easy – but actually doing it. Having started at 19 years old playing music on college radio, one day a friend sent Recondite one of her tunes, he released it... and the rest is history? A great story that will continue here at Lux. And the next chapters will sound as beautiful as the music she gives us: Uchi says maybe someday, after retiring from the hectic club life, she’ll find a cabin in the woods to read and do soundtracks.
