Optimo (Espacio) 'Não podem tocar isto no SubClub - é um sacrilégio!", "Toquem techno" ou "Mas… Vocês começaram o Pure [o primeiro clube de techno de Glasgow], como é que podem fazer isto?" são alguns dos comentários que JD Twitch and Jonnie Wilkes ouviram ao longo do seu caminho de 20 anos como a dupla de DJs Optimo. E esses reparos não representam as suas fraquezas (não temos a certeza se eles sequer as têm), mas definitivamente as suas forças. Nas palavras dos próprios, "As pessoas ficavam mesmo zangadas com o que tocávamos mas claro que isso só deitou achas para a fogueira!". Os lendários Optimo começaram a fazer a sua coisa em 1997, há vinte anos atrás - daí o conjunto de datas celebratórias deste ano, incluindo esta em Lisboa - embora Twitch e Jonnie Wilkes já misturassem música a solo há mais dez. JD Twitch veio de uma escola que encapsula electro, rock ruidoso e o punk funk Nova Iorquino dos 80s de Liquid Liquid (a quem pediram emprestado o nome da faixa super-percussiva Optimo), enquanto Wilkes foi criado com uma dieta de reggae, funk e jazz. Agora imaginem este combo mas adicionem algum do melhor techno jamais feito, seleccionado directamente da fonte - Twitch co.fundou o primeiro clube de techno da Escócia, o Pure, que durou dez anos, foi o primeiro clube da Europa a marcar Jeff Mills, Green Velvet e Richie Hawtin, tornando-se naturalmente lendário. O Pure também criou três editoras que lançaram música de gente como Coil, Chris and Cosey, Jimi Tenor ou Orlando Voorn. Yep. Foi também há vinte anos que estes dois inovadores destemidos fundaram a sua clubnight homónima Optimo como uma reacção a sets repetitivos de techno 4/4 toda a noite. O Ethos? Vale tudo. Nas palavras de Twitch. "Adoro o DJing com todo o meu coração mas já estava tão farto de perfeccionismo técnico - era apenas óbvio, previsível e fácil demais - que tive qye fazer qualquer coisa para preservar a minha (in)sanidade." Esta visão criou uma abordagem ao DJing mais emocional e super-influente que os levou à colta do planeta para misturar electro, techno, rock e música fora-de-formato que eles sintam. Alguns convidados das suas noites incluem LCD Soundsystem, Atom Heart, Luciano, Four Tet e Justus Kohncke. A sua agora-suspensa editora Optimo Trax lançou alguma da música mais interessante e sentida de diferentes pontos do globo - e fiquem também de olho na nova aventura editorial da dupla, uma etiqueta profundamente política com filosofia antifa e provavelmente (bom, definitivamente) muita música excitante, daqula que nos vai fazer querer continuar a fazer parte desta coisa doce-e-amarga chamada underground. Ivan Smagghe Muitos dos nossos fascínios actuais na música se devem ao trabalho de gigantes como Ivan Smagghe; no-wave escura, post punk, mutações electro e neo-romantic dos cânones 4/4, rock bastardo - tudo riqueza que tinha sido empurrada para fora do universo do DJing pela altura em que obreiros como Smaghe, Trevor Jackson ou Optimo decidiram criar uma novo paradigma no underground trazendo estes estilos de volta às malas de discos. Esforços editoriais como a Kill The DJ trouxeram a escuridão caótica e imperfeita das margens para o centro e uma maré negra de excessos sónicos, gravações lo-fi e vozes alienadas abriram-nos horizontes para lá da rigidez bem disposta de maioria da música de dança do final dos anos 90 e início dos 2000. Com Arnaud Rebotini deixou-nos hits de saturação electro-house como "Me And Madonna", "The Abwehr Disco" ou "Italian Fireflies" - falamos do projecto Blackstrobe, claro, que todos dançámos de punho no ar. O seu mix-CD "Suck My Deck" de 2004 para a Bugged Out!, é um clássico moderno e um "ano zero" para muitos de nós. Hoje em dia é um regular da estação de rádio londrina NTS, onde partilha novas descobertas de escuridão electrónica com o mundo. Tem corrido o mundo como DJ e tem sido, desde há muito, parceiro regular de cabine da lenda Andrew Weatherall - outro lendário inconformado. Cada novo embate com o temível Ivan na cabine do Lux, como sabem, é garantidamente singular e imperdível - vemo-nos na pista, à frente. - Inês Coutinho \\ ENGLISH // Optimo (Espacio) 'You can't play this in the Sub Club - it's sacrielige!', 'Play techno!' or 'But... you started Pure [the first techno club in Glasgow], how can you do this?' are some of the comments JD Twich and Jonnie Wilkes have heard thoughout their 20-year path together as the DJ duo Optimo. And they don't represent their weaknesses (we're not sure they even have those), rather their definite strenghts. In their own words, 'People would get really angry about [what we'd play] which of course only fuelled the flames!" The legendary Optimo started in 1997, twenty years ago - hence this year's string of celebratory dates, including this one in Lisbon - though Twitch and Jonnie Wilkes had both been DJing solo for a decade. Twitch came from a school that encapsulates electro, noisy rock and the eighties New York punk funk of Liquid Liquid (from whose percussion-heavy track Optimo they borrowed their name) while Wilkes was raised a strict diet of reggae, funk and jazz. Imagine this combo and add some of the best techno selected right from its source - Twitch co founded Scotland's first techno club, Pure, which ran for ten years, was the first club in Europe to book Jeff Mills, Green Velvet and Richie Hawtin, natually becoming legendary. Pure also ran three labels which released music from the likes of Coil, Chris and Cosey, Jimi Tenor or Orlando Voorn, amongst others. Yep. Twenty years ago, these two fearless innovators also founded their homonymous clubnight Optimo as a reaction to repetitive 4/4 techno sets all night long. The ethos? Anything goes. In Twitch's words, "I love DJing with all my heart but at this point I was so bored with seamless mixing - it was all just too obvious, too predictable and too easy - that I had to do something to preserve my (in)sanity." This vision created a super-influential and emotional take on DJing that propelled them around the world to mix up electro, techno, rock and any off-kilter records that would tickle their fancy. Past guests of their nights include LCD Soundsystem, Atom Heart, Luciano, Four Tet and Justus Kohncke. Their now-dormant label Optimo Trax released some of the most interesting and heartfelt music from different points in the globe - watch out for their new editorial adventure, another left-of-centre, heavily political label with a strong antifa stance and most likely (well, definitely) lots of exciting music, the kind that will keep us wanting to be part of this bittersweet thing called underground. Ivan Smagghe Many of our current fascinations in music we owe to the work of giants like Ivan Smagghe; dark no-wave, post-punk, electro and neo-romantic mutations of the 4/4 canon, bastard rock - all of it incredible wealth that had been pushed outside of the DJing universe by the time that dedicated music lovers such as Smagghe, Trevor Jackson or Optimo decided to create a new paradigm in the underground by bringing back those styles into the records bags again. Editorial efforts such as Kill The DJ brought back the chaotic and imperfect darkness of these marginal records to the centre of it all, and a black tide of sonic excess, lo-fi recordings and detached vocals opened up our horizons beyond the camp rigidity of most dance music circa late 90s and early 2000s. Together with Arnaud Rebotini he left us saturated electro-house hymns such as "Me And Madonna", "The Abwehr Disco" or "Italian Fireflies" - we're talking about the Blackstrobe project, of course, that we all danced to with our fists in the air. His "Suck My Deck" mix-CD for Bugged Out! released in 2004 is a modern classic and a "year zero" for many of us. Nowadays he's a regular at London's radio station NTS, where he shares with the world his new finds in electronic darkness. He's been around the globe DJing and has also frequently shared the booth with another legendary rebel, Andrew Weatherall.
