Noite TRIBAL AMERICA Rob Di Stefano Ok, admitimos – talvez para a geração mais nova dos habitués das pistas, seja difícil responder à pergunta: quem é Rob Di Stefano? Vamos tentar dar uma ajuda a esses, e relembrar qualquer coisa aos mais velhos. Seja como for, estão todos a tempo de virem celebrar juntos. Até o próprio nome soa a alguém importante – e a História confirma-o. Rob é uma das figuras maiores do House norte-americano tendo, ao mesmo tempo, ligações fortes ao Reino Unido e a Portugal. DJ desde os anos 80, cria em 1991 a Tribal Records, e a subsidiária no Reino Unido. Juntando um quem-é-quem de figuras ilustres, não é incomum que ainda hoje os mais diversos DJs refiram a Tribal como uma das editoras favoritas. Como explicar o fenómeno? Com uma linha editorial estrita e cuidada, torna-se sinónimo de um som quente e incisivo, com elementos aliando a percussão às melodias simples e cativantes, e baixos tremendos a darem corpos a faixas que muitas vezes não se inibiam de conter instrumentos orgânicos e vozes cheias de um corpo e alma que cada vez são mais difíceis de encontrar na música House contemporânea. Artistas chave? Murk, Junior Vasquez, Deep Dish, Danny Tenaglia. Mas também tantos outros! Rob descobriria em Portugal talento de sobra – e foi pela sua mão que a reedição de “So Get Up!”, dos Underground Sound of Lisbon (DJ Vibe + Rui da Silva), aconteceu e atingiu fama global, que perdurou pelo tempo. Nem sequer precisamos de ficar pelos 90s – o ano passado editou “No Regrets”, de Miguel Torga, também ele parceiro nesta noite Tribal. Testemunhos da ligação ao país, podemos revisitar mix-CDs como “Twist This Portuguese Pussy” ou “Yorn Sound System”. Ou, melhor ainda, virmos para Santa Apolónia sem preconceitos e de ouvidos abertos para perceber quem é Rob di Stefano em 2017. Sabendo que há coisas que não mudam, esperam-se batidas a soarem gigantes e a abanarem o chão de madeira. Música quente, suada, com toques de loucura a impedirem qualquer par de ancas de estarem quietos. Numa altura em que a palavra “rave” é atirada ao desbarato, temos a certeza que esse é um espírito que estará bem presente. - Inês Duarte Early Jacker (live) Early Jacker é mais um dos heterónimos de Hugo Vinagre, nome de origem que parece menos usado dos que os outros que escolheu para se apresentar. Como Miguel Torga tem percorrido o país muito à conta do sucesso do álbum de estreia, “Hexágono Amoroso”. Mas a faceta que vai mostrar neste sábado de setembro é outra. É a de um projecto que se apresenta logo de início como um projecto de inspiração nas raízes do House, e não propriamente uma tentativa de revolucionar o mundo da música electrónica. “Jack is the one who gives you the power to jack your body!”, gritava profeticamente Chuck Roberts num tema de Rhythm Controll que haveria de se tornar lei para as legiões de fanáticos dançando pelo mundo todo. E Early Jacker é muito um tributo a isto. A dançar, a fazer música pelo mais puro gozo e à inocência de um simples groove poder muito facilmente incendiar uma pista de dança. O trabalho já materializado está na forma de uma edição na Extended Records (“Kink / Moaners”) e uma remistura na Container Music, o que torna o desafio e a curiosidade ainda maiores para uma actuação ao vivo de onde conhecemos três temas. Se não chega para vos convencer a espreitar, devia. Let’s Jack. - Inês Duarte \\ ENGLISH // Rob Di Stefano Ok, we admit it – maybe for the younger clubber generation it’s a bit hard to answer the question: who is Rob di Stefano? We’ll try to help them out, and help the veterans remember some details. It doesn’t matter anyway: all are invited to dance together. Even the name sounds like it belongs to someone important – and History confirms it. Rob is one of the key figures of American House music and yet at the same time he has strong ties to both the UK and Portugal. DJing since the 80s, in 1991 he created Tribal Records and its UK division. Putting together a who’s who of House producers, it’s not uncommon for many DJs to still reference Tribal as one of their favourite labels. How to explain this phenomenon? With a perfectly curated series of releases which became synonymous of a warm and incisive sound, joining together percussion and (mostly!) simple but captivating melodies, with tremendous basslines laying the foundation for tracks that often times wouldn’t shy away from featuring real instruments or soul filled vocals, the kind of vocals that today’s electronic music seems to be missing. Key artists? Murk, Junior Vasquez, Deep Dish, Danny Tenaglia. But also many, many others! Rob would discover in Portugal a lot of talent – and due to him, Underground Sound of Lisbon’s (DJ Vibe + Rui da Silva) “So Get Up!” was re-released for a global market, ending up with a worldwide fame that still lives on. We don’t even need to go back to the 90s, as just last year he released “No Regrets”, by Miguel Torga who also is featured on this Tribal Records night. Testimonies of his connection with our country, we could revisit mix-CDs such as “Twist This Portuguese Pussy” or “Yorn Sound System”. Or, better yet, we could arrive at Lux with fresh and open ears to figure out who is Rob di Stefano in 2017. Knowing that some things never change, we can expect huge beats shaking up our wooden dancefloor. Hot, sweaty music with enough madness to prevent any pair of hips from standing still. At a time when the word “rave” seems to be used a little too liberally, we’re certain that that’s the original kind of spirit that will echo through the night. - Inês Duarte Early Jacker (live) Early Jacker is another heteronym of Hugo Vinagre – a birth name he never really seems to choose for music. As Miguel Torga he’s been touring the country much due to the success of the debut album “Hexágono Amoroso”. But the nature of what he’ll show us on this September Saturday is of a different kind. It is the nature of a project that from the beginning presents itself as inspired by the roots of House, and not really an attempt to change any paradigms in electronic music. “Jack is the one who gives you the power to jack your body!”, Chuck Roberts prophetically declared over a Rhythm Controll record that would become law to legions of fanatics dancing all over the world. And Early Jacker is considerably a tribute to this. A tribute to dancing, to making music for the sheer pleasure of it and to the innocence of a simple groove that can set a dancefloor alight. So far, only a remix on Container Music and a debut EP – “Kink / Moaners” on Extended Records – have been released, making this live performance a challenge to be faced with even greater curiosity.
