PORTER RICKS

Diz a lenda que no lugar onde o mundo acaba, há uma luz que nunca se apaga. Exploradores e almas errantes relatam que por entre as brumas que cobrem permanentemente o Fim do Mundo, se vê o clarão de um farol que vai e vem, sempre ao mesmo ritmo, golpeando sem pausa a escuridão. E os únicos sons que se ouvem são do do mar negro e das suas criaturas, e um pulsar fundo que vibra ao ritmo desse clarão, constante, infinito, que nasce das entranhas do mar.

Em 1996 Thomas Köner e Andy Mellwig viram este mar do Fim do Mundo, sentiram o seu vibrar, e regressaram para contar a história. O projecto Porter Ricks lançou então na Chain Reaction (possivelmente a mais importante editora de dub-techno de sempre) o álbum ‘Biokinetics’, que muitos juram ser, a par do único álbum de Basic Channel e de ‘Coldest Season’ dos DeepChord, o mais influente álbum do género. Seguro é que nada até então tinha soado como este disco, e passados mais de 20 anos, ninguém soa como os Porter Ricks. O tema náutico subjacente a praticamente todo o seu trabalho tem tradução literal no que se ouve, constituindo algum do techno mais “visual” que alguma vez se ouviu: a sensação é a de dançar numa pista no fundo dos oceanos, ou de ir a um after-hours no convés de um cargueiro açoitado pelos ventos e pela espuma das ondas no meio de uma tempestade. O som líquido e fractal dos Porter Ricks desapareceu depois por volta de 1999, para emergir das profundezas o ano passado, como se tempo algum tivesse passado.
É o momento para respirar fundo e mergulharmos nas profundezas, à descoberta do que elas escondem. Por 20.000 léguas submarinas ou através da névoa, os Porter Ricks vão guiar-nos a porto seguro. Basta seguir o infinito vibrar da pulsação do oceano.
 
TIJANA T

Não é dos primeiros sítios que nos vem à cabeça quando pensamos em destinos “clubbing” na Europa, mas todos os DJs que vão actuar a Belgrado, e em especial ao club Drugstore, um antigo matadouro transformado literalmente em catedral da dança, crucifixo sobre a pista incluído, regressam de lá esmagados com a intensidade da paixão dos sérvios pelo techno. Pois bem, a nossa convidada desta noite é uma das DJs residentes do Drugstore, o que desde logo permite antever que estamos perante alguém cuja experiência é forjada no ferro e fogo de uma das mais exigentes pistas da Europa.
No fundo, Tijana Todorovic só queria estudar Espanhol e Filosofia. Mas crescendo numa Belgrado bombardeada constantemente pela NATO nos anos 90, era mais fácil encontrar um club aberto do que uma escola ou biblioteca. Ao rebentar das bombas, a juventude sérvia respondia com o estrondo do kick drum, em festas vividas como se fossem a última oportunidade de uma vida. Inevitavelmente, Tijana T passou da pista para trás dos decks e descobriu uma habilidade natural para misturar. Esteve envolvida na organização do hoje em dia mundialmente famoso Exit Festival, foi apresentadora de TV e rádio, e cantou com Abe Duque, mas quando foi despedida por passar música demasiada arriscada na TV, tudo isso passou e Tijana teve de se questionar sobre o que realmente a fazia feliz, percebeu que era o DJing. E é inquestionável que a escolha foi a certa. Atente-se à sua presença no roster da Dystopian de Rødhåd, por exemplo. Essa alegria é um ponto-chave no que Tijana faz, porque quem a vê actuar, movendo-se com destreza do house mais fundo ao techno mais áspero, percebe estar perante alguém que está a fazer o que mais gosta na vida.
Para ela, o DJing é como fazer amor : por muita técnica que tenhas, por muitas acrobacias que faças, se não houver magia entre o DJ e a pista, podes obter gratificação instantânea, mas não deixarás marcas ou recordações. A nossa intuição diz-nos que ninguém esquecerá mais de Tijana T.

PORTER RICKS
The legend says that at the place where the world ends, there is a light that never goes out. Explorers and lost souls tell tales of how, from beyond the fog that perenially covers the edge of the world, you can see the glare from a lighthouse coming and going, in a constant rhythm, ceaselessly penetrating the darkness. And the only sounds you can hear, are of the black sea and it’s creatures, and a deep pulse vibrating at the same pace as the glare, constant, infinite, from the bowels of the sea.
Thomas Köner e Andy Mellwig saw the sea at the end of the world back in 1996, felt it’s vibration, and came back to tell the story. That was when their Porter Ricks project released the ‘Biokinetics’ album on Chain Reaction (possibly the most importante dub-techno label of all time) an album that many swear is the most influential in the genre, along with the only Basic Channel album and DeepChord’s ‘Coldest Season’. Safe to say that until then, nothing had sounded like that record, and more than 20 years later, still no one sounds like Porter Ricks. The nautical theme subjacente to almost all of their work has a literal translation in to what you can hear, making up for some of the most visual techno music  of all time: it feels like dancing on the bottom of the ocean, or attending na after-hours party on the deck of a ship being whipped by winds and the foam of storm waves. The liquid, fractal sound of Porter Ricks disappeared around 1999, to emerge from the depths again last year, as if no time had passed in between.
This is the dark tide that now floods the Lux disco floor. I tis time for a deep breath and to dive into the depths, in search of it’s secrets. 20.000 leagues travelled under the sea or through the mists, guided by Porter Ricks into a safe harbour. All you have to do is follow the infinte vibration of the ocean’s pulse.
 
TIJANA T
Maybe it’s not one of the first places that come to mind when you think about European clubbing destinations, but all the DJs that play in Belgrade , return totally crushed by the intense passion shown by the serbian techno fans, especially at Drugstore, an old slaughterhouse turned into the city’s techno catedral, crucifix over the floor included. Well, our guest tonight is one of the Drugstore’s resident DJs, so that should give you the right to expect someone whose experience was forged in the fire and brimstone of one of the most demanding dancefloors in Europe.
Deep down, Tijana Todorovic simply wanted to study spanish and philosophy. But growing up in a Belgrade constantly being bombed by NATO, in the 90s, it was easier to find a club open, than schools or libraries. To the bomb blasts, the serbian youth responded with the beat of the kick drum, in parties that were enjoyed with the intensity of someone who knew it might just be their last one. Inevitavelmente, Tijana T went from the dancefloor to the decks and there she discovered an instictive mixing ability. She was also involved on the production of the now world famous Exit Festival, she was a radio and TV presenter, and sang with Abe Duque. But when that was over and she got fired from TV from playing too out there music, Tijana had to realize what it was that really made her happy in life, and the answer was clear : DJing. It was such a right choice that she now finds herself on the roster of Rødhåd’s Dystopian, for exemple. And that joy is key to what Tijana does, because anyone who sees her play, moving skillfully from the deepest house to the harshest techno, realizes this is someone doing what they most love in life.
So for her, DJing really is a lot like making love : you can have a lot of technique and pull off some amazing acrobatics, but if there isn’t that magic spark between the DJ and the dancefloor, you might give them instante gratification, but you won’t leave a mark or make a memory. Well, our intuition tells us now one will ever forget Tijana T.
