STEVE GUNN & MIKE COOPER
Sem qualquer necessidade de invocar uma expressão tão frívola quanto “encontro geracional” para que este encontro faça sentido, podia apenas recorrer-se à guitarra enquanto elo de ligação entre Mike Cooper e Steve Gunn. Na necessidade de algum conforto contextual, dada a aparente disparidade dos trajectos, e sem se reduzir ao denominador comum de um “mero” instrumento, pegue-se nos fantasmas dos blues e da folk como assombração beatífica a pairar sobre os dois músicos. Cimentando pacientemente a sua indiscutível relevância, Steve Gunn regressa ao OUT.FEST um ano depois de um belíssimo concerto e com o transcendente 'Time Off' acabado de sair na Paradise of Bachelors. Pelo meio editou um maravilhoso disco de estrada na companhia do baterista John Truscinski, num reconhecimento crescente que, ainda assim, é insuficiente para com a verdadeira dimensão das suas canções. Mike Cooper é uma daquelas lendas vivas cuja invisibilidade se reveste de uma enorme injustiça poética perante um imponente legado construído ao longo de mais de 40 anos. Artista multifacetado, cuja obra se estende até aos campos da electrónica ou da instalação, Cooper trabalhou como músico de sessão em incontáveis álbuns, ao mesmo tempo que era um dos maiores responsáveis pelo boom que os blues tiveram na Inglaterra no final dos anos 60, desbravando caminho através da experimentação em torno dessas mesmas raízes. Profundo conhecedor da música do Pacífico, tem desenvolvido um estudo minucioso e apaixonante em torno da exotica – presciente secreto para muitas das visões tropicais que têm tomado forma ao longo dos últimos anos – registado em inúmeros discos de descoberta essencial. Numa altura em que se preparam para gravar um álbum em conjunto, a estreia deste duo de Gunn e Cooper reveste-se de uma aura especial de imprevisibilidade que a torna num acontecimento imperdível.


SIRIUS [Yaw Tembé & Monsieur Trinité]
Yaw Tembe é músico (trompetista, principalmente, mas multi-instrumentalista), escultor, poeta (premiado, por exemplo, na edição de 2011 do Lisboa Poetry Slam) e artista de rua. Nascido na Suazilândia no final dos anos 80 mas radicado em Lisboa, é dos mais promissores e talentosos músicos em território nacional a operar num processo de autoconhecimento e busca de uma linguagem própria, tendo nos últimos anos colaborado com uma miríade de improvisadores portugueses. Dessas muitas colaborações, o duo Sirius, com o percussionista e improvisador Monsieur Trinité (Francisco Trindade, que já tivemos oportunidade de ver no OUT.FEST integrando a Variable Geometry Orchestra, em 2007) é talvez a face mais visível: com ecos de grandes figuras que fizeram do processamento do som da trompete um novo caminho para a expansão sónica do instrumento (como o incontornável Jon Hassell), e reminiscências da free music comunitária norte-americana do início do milénio ou das viagens kosmische dos grandes nomes alemães da década de 70, a música de Sirius, totalmente improvisada, possui desde muito cedo uma identidade vincada, de subtil complexidade, que o futuro se encarregará de confirmar.

STEVE GUNN & MIKE COOPER
While there's absolutely no need to summon hollow reasons for this collaboration to make sense, one can always resort to the guitar as a link between Mike Cooper and Steve Gunn. If needed, taking in mind the disparity of their careers, and without reducing it to a “mere” instrument, there’s always the ghost of the blues and folk haunting both musicians in the most beatific manner. Patiently cementing his relevance, Steve Gunn returns to the OUT.FEST one year after a stunning concert, and with the beauty of 'Time Off' – through Paradise of Bachelors - still fresh in everyone's ears and minds. In-between such efforts, he's been active as the guitar player for Kurt Vile's backing band – Violators – and released a lovely “open road” record with drummer John Truscinski, all the while being recognized as one of folk's true brilliant minds. An invisible living legend on his own, Mike Cooper has been developing a noble legacy for more than 40 years, whose work is still criminally overlooked. Extending to such areas as electronic music or sound installation, Cooper's magnificent work crosses from being a session musician in numerous records, through his responsibility in defining the blues in the UK in the late 60's to his experimental voyages within the genre. With a deep knowledge of music from the Pacific, he's been developing a passionate study among the boundaries of exotica – making him a secret influence/forerunner for a lot of most recent tropical visions – that's been registered on a number of records whose value is still to be truly acknowledged. As the musicians prepare to record an album together, this debut meeting between Cooper and Gunn reveals itself as one of those happenings that can't really be missed.


SIRIUS [Yaw Tembé & Monsieur Trinité]
Yaw Tembé is a musician (trumpet, percussion, etc), sculptor, poet and street artist. Born on Swaziland in the late eighties, but settled in Lisbon, he is one of the city’s most promising up and coming creative artists, bent on a thorough process of self-knowledge and fully committed to finding his individual voice, as the many and regular encounters with a myriad of Portuguese musicians and improvisers in the past few years can attest. Sirius, his duo with percussionist Monsieur Trinité (Francisco Trindade, who we’ve seen at OUT.FEST as part of the Variable Geometry Orchestra in 2007), is probably the most visible part of this work: bearing echoes of great names who through the processing of the trumpet paved way to its sonic expansion (Jon Hassell comes to mind) and reminiscences of beginning of the millennium north-American communal improvisation and the great kosmische names of the seventies, Sirius’ music, fully improvised, possesses since its early inception a strong sense of identity and subtle complexity, which the future will certainly confirm.
