MIL TALKS | The Happy City

How can a city become more attractive to artists and the public? What factors and mechanisms are behind the transformation of a city into a creative and artistic hub? MIL’s first edition will bring together a group of professionals that will analyse these questions – approaching them through economical, political, artistic, social and demographic criteria from different cities of the world – to better comprehend the city as an important creative and artistic hub.

NUNO GALOPIM (PT)
Journalist, radio host, DJ and music critic 

Nuno Galopim is a journalist, radio host, DJ and music critic. He writes regularly for Portuguese newspaper Expresso, Blitz and Metropolis magazines and is one of the authors of the webzine Typewriter and Sound + Vision blog. He has been a radio host since 1989 and he has acted as a musical consultant to RTP2, a Portuguese public TV channel. For 20 years, he was the culture editor of Diário de Notícias and he has been Billboard’s Portuguese correspondent.

Assistant Professor of the Department of Architecture and Urbanism, ISCTE - University Institute of Lisbon

Paula André has a PhD in Architecture and Urbanism by ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon. She is Assistant Professor of the Department of Architecture and Urbanism [School of Technology and Architecture]. She is a researcher at DINÂMIA’CET-IUL and a team member of the project Printed Photography: image and propaganda in Portugal (1934-1974).


JOÃO SEIXAS (PT)
Economist / Urban Geographer / Professor and Researcher at FCSH and CICS.NOVA

João Seixas is a Professor in Urban Studies, in Lisbon. Holding a PhD. in Urban Geography (Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, 2007) and in Sociology of the Territory and the Environment (ISCTE/Lisbon, in co-tutorial), his body of work focuses on the applied and scientific domains connected with cities, human geography, urban planning, urban sociology and urban politics, territorial socio-spatial systems and trends. He is a published author and the manager of Ler Devagar, an iconic bookstore and cultural project based in Lisbon, since 1999.


JOSÉ MATEUS (PT) 
Architect and president of Lisbon Architecture Triennale

Graduated from FAUTL - Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Lisbon as an Architect, he’s the founder and president of the Lisbon Architecture Triennale. In 1991, he co-founded the ARX Portugal atelier. ARX projects have been widely awarded and published three monographs. Author of the TV show “Tempo e Traço” from SIC Notícias, he taught in several national and international schools and was also president and vice-president of the Southern Regional Section of Ordem dos Arquitectos (2005/07).


JOANA GOMES CARDOSO (PT)
President of EGEAC, Lisbon 

Joana Gomes Cardoso is president of EGEAC, Lisbon’s municipal cultural company, since January 2015. She previously headed the Office of Planning, Strategy, Evaluation and International Relations of the Ministry of Culture (2010-2012). She holds a degree in International Relations, a Masters in Culture and Development from the Catholic University of Leuven and was admitted to the PhD program in Anthropology at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon. She was a journalist for several years in Lisbon, New York, New Delhi and Communications Director of the European Office of Amnesty International in Brussels, as well as Vice-President of Amnesty International Portugal.


ANTÓNIO BRITO GUTERRES (PT)
Researcher in Urban Studies

He’s been the Coordinator of intervention and development projects for the last twelve years in several institutions and territories. He’s also part of distinct associations, some of them local, others for awareness about cities and urbanism. He has held several lectures on participation, commons, urban regeneration, art and culture in the development of the city. He is also a member of INURA - International Network for Urban Research and Action.
