MIL TALKS | The Creative Force of Independent Labels

The advent of digital technology brought radical changes to the relationship between the different elements inside the music industry. In this debate, the role of the independent labels and their relationship with the music industry will be discussed. With the economic crisis, the major record labels partially resigned their role of monitoring artists they represented. Did these developments benefit or paralyse the progress of independent labels? How do these independent bodies contribute to the creative process? Moreover, how do they see their future in the digital era?

RUI PORTULEZ (PT)
Journalist / Radio Host / A&R, Valentim de Carvalho (Portugal)

Rui Portulez works as A&R at NorteSul, a sub-label of Valentim de Carvalho. He's the author of several documentaries about the independent Portuguese music scene ("I love my label" with Antena 3 and RTP 2). He worked as a radio host (RUC, XFM, Oxigénio) and as a music journalist at Público.

WILSON VILARES (PT)
DJ / Founding member of the DJ duo Celeste/Mariposa 

A man of many affairs, Wilson is a founding member of local label Celeste/Mariposa and one of the most famous record collectors and DJs from Lisbon. He is passionate about the music and rythms of Portuguese-speaking territories. Through his label, he releases outstanding and forgotten musicians and as a DJ he shows them all over the world. He has collaborated with ANALOG AFRICA's latest release "Space Echo - The Mystery Behind the Cosmic Sound of Cabo Verde”
 

ZÉ ANTÓNIO MOURA (PT)
DJ and Sound Artist / Music critic / Programmer / Co-founder, Príncipe Label (Portugal)

Zé Pedro Moura is a DJ and sound artist who works in different fields in the music industry. In 2011, he co-founded Principe, a record label based in Lisbon that is fully dedicated to releasing 100% real contemporary dance music coming out of the city, its suburbs, projects & slums. He is also a co-founder of FLUR (2001), an independent record shop, located in Lisbon and has been working as a music critic and a radio director and host for over 20 years. Additionally, Zé Moura has programmed several concerts and music festivals over the years. 

HUGO FERREIRA (PT)
Co-Founder and manager, Omnichord Records (Portugal)

Hugo Ferreira created Omnichord Records in 2012 convinced that bands from the Portuguese local scene deserved to have their music released. The roster focuses on indie, rock, folk, electronic and classic artists such as First Breath After Coma, Nice Weather for Ducks, Surma, Les Crazy Coconuts, Twin Transistors, Few Fingers, Born A Lion, André Barros, Whales, Bússola, The Allstar Project. 

CÉLINE FREZZA (FR)
Artistic director, Jarring Effects (França)

Céline is the artistic director, with Mister Mo (Label Manager), of Jarring Effects, the famous French independent label of electronic music influenced by everything from dub to Hip-Hop. In addition, Jarring Effects also works with a broader catalogue of pop artists: Erotic Market, Interlope and with international artists Capetown Effects, Filastine, Virus Syndicate, Oddateee, Reverse Engineering, Scorn, Vuneny, Playdoe and Ben Sharpa.
