O azulejo, cuja história remonta, em Portugal, ao final do século XV, é hoje parte integrante do imaginário nacional. Esta ideia é reforçada pela recente utilização do azulejo como referente em projectos artísticos nos quais o material cerâmico é substituído pelo papel, madeira ou “pintura mural”, e os seus motivos tradicionais (figurativos ou de padrão) são trabalhados através de uma linguagem contemporânea, associada à cultura urbana. O AzLab#32 pretende, assim, abrir o debate em torno desta evocação da tradição azulejar no panorama artístico nacional. Para tal, conta com a presença de Joana Abreu, artista, designer e autora  do projecto Preencher Vazios, que constitui um exemplo desta nova abordagem ao azulejo. Através da aplicação de placas em madeira que mimetizam os padrões dos azulejos de fachada, alterando-lhes a cor e acrescentando-lhes excertos de textos de autores portugueses, este projecto pretende chamar a atenção para a degradação do património azulejar no nosso país.

The azulejo (tile), whose history goes back, in Portugal, to the end of the 15th century, is now an integral part of the national imagination. This idea is reinforced by the recent use of the azulejo as a reference in artistic projects in which the ceramic material is replaced by paper, wood or “mural painting”, and its traditional motives (figurative or pattern) are worked through a contemporary language, associated with urban culture. The AzLab # 32 aims, therefore, to open the debate around this evocation of the azulejo tradition in the national artistic panorama. To this end, our next guest will be Joana Abreu, artist, designer and author of the project Preencher Vazios (Fill in Voids), who is an example of this new approach to the azulejo. Through the application of wooden plaques that mimic the patterns of the façade azulejos, giving them different colours and adding excerpts of texts, this project aims to draw attention to the degradation of the azulejo heritage in our country.
