About the research:
"Beacons responds to research of the sinking of the Portuguese slave ship, the São José Paquete d'Africa, off the coast of Cape Town in 1794. The ship, carrying 500 stolen Mocambiquan people, was en route to Brazil, as part of a Triangle Trade of humans for products from the New World.
Beacons integrates paper cutting, antique maps, mathematical text, found objects, light and shadow.
The work references light held for ones lost at sea/forgotten. Furthering an investigation of edges and liminal space, the idea of a metaphorical shore, is implied.
The action of cutting maps acknowledges their contribution to the colonial construct of dominance."
