O IndieLisboa 2017 e o colectivo White Noise, em colaboração com a Cinemateca Portuguesa, apresentam "On the Silver Globe" (Na srebrnym globie, 1987), de Andrzej Żuławski, em restauro digital e com introdução do investigador Daniel Bird.
 
"On the Silver Globe" é a adaptação livre dos dois primeiros volumes de “The Lunar Trilogy" (“On the Silver Globe” e "The Victor") do escritor modernista Jerzy Żuławski, tio-avô do cineasta. Aparentemente um filme de ficção científica, tem uma abordagem filosófica ambiciosa sobre a imutável natureza humana que impossibilita a conquista da verdadeira liberdade e a superação das suas próprias limitações. Trata-se de uma obra-prima visionária, semelhante a um puzzle psicadélico, repleto de referências à religião, história e cultura.
 
Quatro astronautas estabelecem-se num planeta alienígena na tentativa de criar o seu próprio paraíso, livre de fraquezas e vícios da civilização moderna. Este conceito ambicioso é rapidamente deformado pelos seus descendentes degenerados que, inadvertidamente, repetem os erros praticados pela raça humana: estabelecem uma sociedade hierárquica, reverenciam falsos deuses, procuram a expansão e o conflito com os mais evoluídos Szerns. Quando um estranho chega ao planeta, primeiro é encarado como um salvador, acabando por ser traído e morto, provando que o mal e o vício não provêm da circunstância ou do meio, mas da própria natureza humana.
 
A obra destaca-se pela inovadora forma visual que agora pode ser totalmente apreciada. Os planos com a câmara à mão são especialmente cativantes, podendo a primeira parte, em que o espectador assiste a acontecimentos a partir da perspectiva da câmara, classificar o filme como um precursor da técnica "found footage", actualmente bastante popular.
 
Em 1977, o trabalho nesta produção de grande orçamento foi interrompido pelo Ministro da Arte e da Cultura. A maioria dos cenários e do guarda roupa foi destruída, sendo Andrzej Żuławski forçado a abandonar a Polónia. Depois de quase uma década, regressou para completar a obra inacabada. O realizador usou filmagens documentais de várias zonas da Polónia e usou a sua voz para preencher as partes que faltavam no enredo.

IndieLisboa 2017 and the White Noise collective, in collaboration with Cinemateca Portuguesa, present 'On the Silver Globe' (Na srebrnym globie, 1988) by Andrzej Żuławski, in digital restoration and introduced by the researcher Daniel Bird.

'On the Silver Globe' is a liberal adaptation of the first two tomes of the “Lunar Trilogy” ('On the Silver Globe' and 'The Victor') by modernist writer Jerzy Żulawski, who was also the director’s great uncle. Hidden under a façade of science of fiction is an ambitious philosophical treatment on unchanging human nature which makes it impossible to achieve true freedom and exceed one’s own limitations. A visionary masterpiece similar to psychedelic puzzle, full of references to religion, history and culture.

Four astronauts settle on an alien planet in attempt to create their own paradise, free of the weaknesses and the vices of modern civilization. The ambitious concept is quickly warped by their degenerate descendants who unknowingly repeat all the errors once already made by the human race: establishing hierarchical society, revering false gods, striving for expansion and conflict with the more highly developed Szerns. When a stranger arrives on their planet they first see him as their savior, though in the end they betray and murder him proving that evil and vice are not rooted in circumstance or environment, but in man himself.

The film stands out thanks to the innovative visual form which can only now be fully appreciated. Unusual hand-held shots are especially interesting. The first part of the film in which the viewer watches events from the perspective of a camera allows labeling Żulawski’s film as a preview of the currently highly popular “found footage” technique.

Work on the high-budget production was interrupted in 1977 by the polish deputy culture and art minister. The majority of the film sets and costumes were destroyed. Soon after Anrdzej Żuławski was forced to leave Poland. He returned to complete his unfinished work after nearly a decade. He used para-documentary footage from various parts of Poland with voice overs to tell the missing parts of the storyline.
