Sarat Maharaj AAH Room 29.04. - 18.06.2017 [for English please scroll down] Obras de Pedro Barateiro, Harun Farocki, Ângela Ferreira, Renée Green, Allan Sekula e Heimo Zobernig. 29.04 | 16h00 Inauguração da exposição 29.04 | 17h00 Conferência “The World Turned Upside Down: Art and Ethics in the Rise of the Stone Age South’, por Sarat Maharaj Sarat Maharaj é um conceituado curador, historiador e teórico da arte que, desenvolvendo o seu trabalho entre Londres e Malmö, se dedica com particular enfâse à obra de Marcel Duchamp e de James Joyce. A ideia para o projeto “AAH Room” partiu de Sarat Maharaj, inspirando-se no modelo da sua sala de aulas quando estudava História da Arte numa universidade destinada a “negros de origem indiana” pelo regime do apartheid, em Salisbury Island (Durban, África do Sul), durante os anos de 1960. Na época, a sala revelava-se como um espaço híbrido, exibindo uma "pirâmide evolutiva" de artefactos, obras de arte e culturas que minava a insistência numa clara separação imposta pelo governo do apartheid. Depois de uma primeira apresentação de “AAH Room” na Academia de Arte de Malmö (Suécia), foi desenvolvida uma nova versão para Lisboa, exibindo obras de arte, incluindo trabalhos de Pedro Barateiro, Harun Farocki, Ângela Ferreira, Renée Green, Emil Westman Hertz, Roger Palmer, Allan Sekula e Heimo Zobernig, juntamente com material documental de diferentes origens. Todos os objetos "equipam" a sala de aula de História da Arte de Sarat Maharaj, para metaforicamente a recriar no espaço Lumiar Cité, transformando uma sala do passado num contexto contemporâneo. Um internalizado sistema eurocêntrico de classificação, organizando objetos por categorias ou compartimentos segregados, sugere universos paralelos e a sua exibição corporiza essa separação. No espaço Lumiar Cité interessa também perceber a que tipo de leituras e contraposições, provavelmente involuntárias, a que a exposição também se abre. A “AAH Room” torna-se mais híbrida, funcionando como espaço de exposição e, ao mesmo tempo, como sala de seminários, onde Sarat Maharaj, Ângela Ferreira e Manuela Ribeiro Sanches, entre outros, conduzem e discutem num cenário que convida a pensar: Como lidar com uma descolonização do conhecimento numa sociedade de amplo conhecimento, num mundo enciclopédico? Qual o proveito para a ideia de prática artística não como uma realista produção de conhecimento, mas o seu oposto – ignorância conhecedora enquanto método do “ignorantitis sapiens”? He is an authority on the oeuvre of Marcel Duchamp and James Joyce. Maharaj’s rather loosely defined project ‘AAH Room’ is based on his classroom back in the 1960s, when he studied Art History on Salisbury Island, Durban, in South Africa, at a university restricted by the apartheid regime to ‘Blacks of Indian origin’. The room developed at the time as a hybrid environment, privately exhibiting an ‘evolutionary ladder’ of artifacts, artworks and cultures undermining the insistence on a clear distinction applied by the apartheid government. After the first presentation of the ‘AAH Room’ at the Malmö Art Academy in Sweden, a new version was developed for Lisbon, including works by the artists Pedro Barateiro, Harun Farocki, Ângela Ferreira, Renée Green, Emil Westman Hertz, Roger Palmer, Allan Sekula and Heimo Zobernig, together with documentary material of different origins. All objects ‘furnish’ Maharaj’s art history classroom in order to re-create the space metaphorically at Lumiar Cité, rendering the room from the past in a contemporary context. Internalized Eurocentric systems of classification, of organizing objects in categories or segregated compartments, suggest parallel universes and the display embodies their apartness. The interest at the exhibition at Lumiar Cité is what kind of counter-views and readings the display also open up, perhaps quiet unwittingly. The hybrid nature of the AAH Room is also reflected in the fact that it is both an exhibition space and a seminar room, where Sarat Maharaj, Ângela Ferreira and Manuela Ribeiro Sanches, among others, will lecture and discuss, in a set-up which invites us to think about how to deal with the decolonialisation of knowledge in an all-compassing knowledge society – a pansophic world? What mileage can be got out of the idea of art practice not as hard-nosed knowledge production, but its opposite – as knowledge ignorance, as the ‘Ignorantitis Sapiens’ mode?
