Depois do concerto de Jenny Hval, da festa de encerramento da BoCA Bienal, a noite continua com Steffi e Dexter na Disco, e Awesome Tapes From Africa e DJ Snifferdog no Bar. Steffi Atendendo ao chamamento primal do ritmo teutónico, o seu coração tocado pela melodia detroitiana, atreveu-se a sair flutuando, do canto escuro onde se resguardava, para se aventurar na massa humana pulsante que enchia a pista. Atordoado como se submetido a um soco no estômago, profundamente, completamente, apaixonou-se pelo efeito que ela produzia nele. De olhos fechados, mas presos ao clarão sugerido dos strobes, braços ao alto tentando tocar o céu, os pés movendo-se num loop como a música que escutava, deixou-se perder. Daquela maneira que só nos conseguimos perder no escuro, no meio de estranhos, naquele clube, com ela. Pois. Quando falamos da Steffi, das memórias que ela nos traz, da música que nos expõe com tanta franqueza e sinceridade, é preciso admitir que a objectividade fica fora da escrita e aquilo de que apetece falar é: o que nos diz o coração quando a escutamos? E são este tipo de sensações e pensamentos que nos atravessam, graças ao tão raro equilíbrio de dureza e graça a que nos habituámos nos seus sets e nas suas produções. No que às últimas diz respeito, descobrimo-la mais recentemente com Martyn no duo Doms & Deykers (ela é a “Doms”) no álbum ‘Evidence From a Good Source’ e no EP ‘Dedicated To Those Who Feel’ (como não adorar este título?), montras de encher o olho e o ouvido de sensibilidades detroitianas e ritmos pumping, ora a direito, ora quebrados, representando alguns dos trabalhos mais lúdicos da sua carreira. Quanto aos DJ sets, podemos arriscar dizer que nos devemos preparar para sermos arrebatados muito mais vezes e em menos tempo. Parece que Portugal produziu na Srª Steffi Doms um efeito similar ao que os seus sets tiveram em nós, e ela será em breve residente… do país e do Lux. A residência começa agora com o Dexter, e será repetida mais duas vezes este ano, com convidados da sua escolha. Certamente que o próximo regresso dele a casa, com o sol sobre o rio e um sorriso na cara, será feito já sonhando com o repetir de tudo o que sentiu, como se fosse a primeira vez. - Nuno Mendonça Awesome Tapes From Africa Há nomes que dizem tudo e Awesome Tapes from Africa diz mesmo o mais importante: é tudo sobre música africana extraordinária editada em cassete. Primeiro foi blogue, depois editora. O mote sempre o mesmo: divulgar gravações analógicas usando tecnologia digital. Brian Shimkovitz, o americano por detrás da operação, descobriu uma fascinante cultura de cassetes quando estava no Gana com uma bolsa e abraçou a missão de a divulgar. É por causa dele que conhecemos Ata Kak, Dj Katapila, Hailu Mergia... Shimkovitz vai directamente à fonte, aos musicos nos paises africanos, em busca das pérolas que fazem tremer os diggers e melómanos com gosto por material fora das caixas do costume. Muita dessa música é antiga, dos anos 70, 80 e 90, mas a actividade da Awesome Tapes também olha para os anos mais recentes porque, no século XXI, em Africa, as cassetes não são um capricho, são a principal opção. O que significa que, enquanto Dj, Brian Shimkovitz tem armas únicas e de efeito potencialmente incendiário - todas em cassete! Certamente podemos encarar a sua vinda ao Lux como oportunidade para ser surpreendidos, alargar referências musicais e apreciar o "exotismo analógico" do acontecimento, mas o mais provável é sermos levados pela pulsão festiva com que os seus sets costumam contaminar o público. Seems like Portugal did to Ms. Steffi Doms something similar to what her sets do to us, and she will soon be a resident… both of the country and at Lux. A blog first, then a record label, always the same motto: spreading analogue recordings via digital technology. Brian Shimkovitz, the American behind this operation, found out about the fascinating cassette culture while in Ghana with a scholarship and decided to share it worldwide. He's the reason we know about Ata Kak, Dj Katapila, Hailu Mergia... Shimkovitz goes straight to the source, to the musicians in African countries, looking for the gems that make diggers with a taste for out of the box stuff go crazy. Some of that extraordinary music comes from the 70s, 80s, and 90s but ATFA has also paying attention to more recent production, because, in Africa, in the XXIst century, cassettes are not a hipster whimp, a smart a curiosity, but simply the main option. That means that, as a DJ, Brian Shimkovitz has very unique and quite infectious arguments - all on cassette tape! Surely we can look at his gig at Lux as an opportunity to be surprised and broaden musical references as well as appreciate the analogue/exotic aspects of the happening but we'll most probably be swept by the irresistible partying vibe of his set.
