A Ilian Tape faz 10 anos. Passaram a correr. Há compilação e tour para celebrar, e o Lux é uma das paragens. Olhem para os manos Zenker e o seu bem escolhido lote de comparsas de aventuras na editora de Munique, Ilian Tape, para terem um dos mais perfeitos exemplos desta ideia, no techno do momento. A verdade é que quando arrancou há 10 anos, a Ilian Tape era uma moderadamente interessante editora de house e techno de contornos minimalistas. Lee Van Dowski ou Jichael Mackson eram nomes a dar-lhe algum pedigree, mas pouco faltou para a label fechar e a tal grande obra não se cumprir. A irrequietude dos Zenkers impeliu-os a continuar a descoberta sonora, passando a sons mais dubby ou um techno atmosférico mas linear, até que a meio do percurso, algum momento “Eureka” se terá dado no seu estúdio e a fórmula que agora todos associam como “o som Ilian Tape” se consolidou. Portentosos breakbeats envoltos em pads e synths atmosféricos que bebem de sons clássicos rave, melodias desenhadas por inteligências artificiais a lembrar a Warp da 1ª metade dos anos 90, tornaram-se sinónimos de um dos mais vitais selos do techno moderno, catapultando Dario e Marco Zenker e outros cientistas do ritmo como Stenny, Andrea ou Skee Mask, para a vanguarda do género. Aclamada, mas sempre um culto, arrojada e única, a Ilian Tape faz há 10 anos soar aos nossos ouvidos os tambores do mais doce apocalipse, e as suas reverberações far-se-ão sentir agora no Lux. STENNY Um dos aspectos mais fascinantes do que a Ilian Tape faz, e que certamente explica a sua consistência qualitativa e estética, é que o seu lote de artistas é relativamente restrito e transmite a ideia de constituir uma equipa. Na 2ª metade dos seus 10 anos de história, contam-se pelos dedos das mãos os nomes que nela editaram. O italiano Stenny é um deles, e na verdade, não editou em mais lado nenhum senão na Ilian Tape. O esplêndido EP de 2013 a meias com Andrea ‘Vostok Smokescreen”, escreveu a laser o seu nome na consciência dos fãs de techno com apetência para quebrar regras. Os traços sonoros que passaram a ser sinónimo da label bávara atingiram aqui um dos seus expoentes máximos. As melodias dominadoras, a percussão e os kicks quebrados com um peso capaz de abrir brechas em cimento, a atmosfera entre a melancolia e a euforia. Soava a um bailado de elefantes cor-de-rosa num filme da Disney vagamente psicadélico. Pegando nesta matriz e atribuindo-lhe rasgos mais industriais ou devaneios mais grime ou jungle, fica definido o que esperar da actuação de um nome que dificilmente poderia surgir de outro cartel que não da Ilian Tape. Destilado, fermentado e servido em doses generosas no Lux, Stenny é o som de uma label em estado de graça. ZENKER BROTHERS É verdade que a identidade da Ilian Tape tem muito daquilo que os elementos do seu catálogo lhe atribuem, mas o cimento que junta todos os tijolos deste edifício é produzido pelos seus fundadores e mentores, os irmãos Zenker, Marco e Dario. A label é nitidamente um produto do amor à arte e serve ao mesmo tempo de narrativa de uma vida feita de música. Ela evoluiu tanto quanto os dois cresceram, amadureceram e encontraram o seu lugar. E esse crescimento foi assente numa indomável vontade de explorar e na fuga ao acomodamento, fruto da energia que resulta de quando duas personalidades diferentes mas perfeitamente complementares se juntam. O que escrevemos antes, ou a escuta de um trabalho como ‘Immersion’, um dos grandes álbuns de techno dos últimos anos, já dizem muito daquilo a que soa a Ilian Tape ou um DJ set seu. Talvez digam menos daquilo que se sente. Ouvi-los é como retirar uma venda que antes só nos permitia ver vultos e adivinhar movimentos, e de repente sentir um foco multicolor apontado à nossa cara e deslizar por sucessivos túneis cósmicos, diferentes entre si, cada uma linha temporal alternativa, de uma mesma realidade. Essa realidade é o techno, mas os Zenker expõe-nos múltiplas possibilidades que nele podem ter origem. No fundo, aquilo que os Zenker Brothers trarão ao Lux será nada mais nada menos do que uma fotografia panorâmica, a 360 graus e a cores vívidas, de uma história de 10 anos que ajudou a expandir os limites de um género. - Nuno Mendonça \\ ENGLISH // ILIAN TAPE From modest beginning can great works be born. Look at the Zenker siblings and their carefully picked bunch of adventurers from the Munich-based Ilian Tape, to get one of the most perfect examples of this idea in current techno. Truth is, when it started 10 years ago, Ilian Tape was a moderately interesting minimalistic house and techno label. Lee Van Dowski or Jichael Mackson were names that gave it some pedigree, but at some point the label was near closing up shop and that great work nearly didn´t happen. The restlessness of the Zenker brothers pushed them on to continue their sonic discovery, going towards a dubbier, atmospheric, but linear techno sound, until halfway through, some “Eureka” moment must´ve happened in their studio and the formula that everyone now associates with the “Ilian Tape sound” consolidated itself. Tremendous breakbeats dressed in atmospheric synths and pads that drink from classic rave sounds, melodies designed by artificial intelligences reminding us of early 90s Warp, became synonymous with one of the most vital seals in modern techno, propelling Dario e Marco Zenker and other rhythm scientists like Stenny, Andrea or Skee Mask, to the genre´s vanguard. Acclaimed, but always a cult, bold and unique, Ilian Tape has for 10 years now made the drums of the sweetest apocalypse sound in our ears, and it´s reverberations will now be felt at Lux. STENNY One of the most fascinating things about what Ilian Tape does, and which certainly helps explain it´s qualitative and aesthetic consistency, it´s that it´s artist roster is relatively limited and it gives the idea of being a team. In the 2nd half of it´s 10-year history, you can count on your fingers the number of names which have releases there. Italian Stenny is one of them and in fact, he hasn´t released anywhere else except on Tape. The splendid EP he did in 2013 along with Andrea ‘Vostok Smokescreen”, made his name become laser-written in the consciousness of techno fans with a willingness to disregard rules. The sound character which became significant of the Bavarian label reached on of it´s greatest exponents here. The dominant melodies, the broken rhythms and percussion that are capable of opening cracks in concrete, the atmosphere somewhere between euphoria and melancholy. It sounded like pink elephants doing ballet in a vaguely psychedelic Disney movie.Taking this matrix and giving it more industrial or more jungle and grime overtones, we can define what to expect from the performance of an artist that could hardly have come from any other stable except Ilian Tape. Distilled, fermented and served in generous doses at Lux, Stenny is the sound of a label in a state of grace. ZENKER BROTHERS It´s true that the identity of Ilian Tape has a lot of what the other names in it´s catalog bring to the plate, but the cement putting all the pieces together comes from it´s founders and mentors, the Zenker Brothers, Marco and Dario. The label is clearly an artistic labor of love and also, at the same time, serves as the narrative of a life made of music. It has developed at the pace through which both have grown, matured and found their place. And that growth was based on an indomitable will to explore, and to escape from safeness, a fruit of the energy created when two different but complementary personalities come together. What we have written so far, or listening to work like ‘Immersion’, one of the great techno albums of the last few years, are already significant of what Ilian Tape or one of their sets sound like. And it´s like taking off a blindfold that previously only allowed you to see shadows or guess movements, and suddenly having a multicolored strobe pointed at your face and then sliding down successive cosmic tunnels, all different from each other, each one like an alternative timeline to the same reality. Techno is that reality, but the Zenkers expose us to the multiple possibilities that can be created from it. In fact, what the Zenker Brothers will bring to Lux will be nothing less than a panoramic, 360-degree, vividly colored photo, of 10 years of history which have helped expand the limits of a genre of music. - Nuno Mendonça
