Se há nome na cena electrónica que é preciso não perder de vista durante muito tempo, é Ellen Allien. Porque ela está sempre a fazer alguma coisa e raramente essa coisa é igual ao que fez imediatamente antes. Ou seja, se é verdade que ela é uma visitante regular do nosso país, também é verdade que a cada visita, o que ela tem para partilhar connosco na cabine, será certamente diferente do que nos trouxe na vez anterior. Isto acontece porque, dito de forma prática, Ellen faz o que lhe apetece. Mais do que um som, ela define-se por uma salutar recusa em ser catalogada ou presa a géneros, pela sua atitude e pela paixão com que está na música, que garantem que mesmo que não se goste de um disco seu ou da sua BPitch Control em particular, nunca duvidamos da convicção com que foi feito e também sabemos que o que vier a seguir corre o risco de ser fabuloso. O seu último álbum, já de 2013, ´LISm´, era ambient, sem beats em 90% da sua duração, mas o mais recente EP, ‘Turn Off Your Mind´, é essencialmente puro acid-techno. Um set seu pode ser uma saraivada de techno industrial topo de gama ou um bálsamo de house solarengo. E quem consegue definir a BPitch Control com outro rótulo que não o de “independente”, no sentido mais puro da palavra? Alguns dos protegidos de Allien, como Modeselektor ou Paul Kalkbrenner, tornaram-se quase estrelas pop, mas em momento nenhum isso significou facilitismo. E ainda há isto: Ellen Allien parece ter um dom premonitório qualquer que antecipa o que vai ser tendência, meses ou anos antes de acontecer (quem se recorda de um “embrionário” Ben Klock editar na BPitch no longínquo ano de 2003?). Em suma, esqueçam tudo o que pensam que sabem sobre Ellen Allien, a única certeza é que se ela gosta, ela toca. De resto passem um apagador no quadro, deixem as ideias pré-concebidas em casa, mas não fiquem em casa. Tragam só duas vontades : de dançar e de sonhar. Because she´s always up to something and that something rarely is anything like what she´s done immediately before. Which means that even though she´s a regular at our country, with every visit, she´ll bring something different to share with us from the DJ booth. That happens because, to put it simply, Ellen does what she pleases. More than by a sound, she´s defined by a healthy denial of categorization, by her attitude and by the passion which she brings to what she does in music. And that is a guarantee that even if you don´t like a particular track of hers, or the latest release on her label BPitch Control, you never doubt the belief that was put into it, and you also know that whatever comes next risks being absolutely fabulous. Her last LP, ´LISm´, from back in 2013, was essentially ambient, beatless for 90% of it´s length, but her most recent EP, ‘Turn Off Your Mind´, is essentially pure acid-techno. A set of hers can be a top-of-the-line industrial techno maelstrom, but the next can be a joyful dose of sunshine house. And who can really define BPitch Control with any other label other “independent”, in the purest sense of that word? Some of Allien´s protegés, like Modeselektor or Paul Kalkbrenner, became near popstars, but at no moment did that mean cheapness or selling out. And there´s also this : Ellen Allien seems to have the gift of prescience, which anticipates tendencies months or even years before they happen (who remembers an “embryonic” Ben Klock doing releases on BPItch Control as far back as 2003?) Summing up, forget all you think you know about Ellen Allien, because the only thing that´s for sure is, if she likes it, she plays it. Other than that, clean your slates and leave preconceptions at home, but don´t stay home, just bring two wishes: to dance and to dream. She´s already warned you, turn off your mind. - Nuno Mendonça
