Projecção do filme 'Por i' de Fernando José Pereira

Projecção do filme "Por i" de Fernando José Pereira

Next to the projection there’s a talk between the artist, Rui Manuel Vieira and Óscar Faria.

Sunday, at 5pm, is projected the film "Por i" by Fernando José Pereira (Porto, 1961), a work that calls into question the way modern Portuguese architecture is preserved, taking the example of the buildings associated with the construction of the Picote dam, located in the municipality of Miranda do Douro, Bragança district. Inaugurated in 1958, Barrocal do Douro, the village adjoining that infrastructure, was designed by three young architects recently graduated from the School of Fine Arts of Porto (ESBAP) - Archer de Carvalho, Nunes de Almeida and Rogério Ramos, who devised a cluster to welcome four thousand people.

As the artist writes:
“Por i” is a film about the utopia of three architects who, in the 50s of the past century, built a modern city away from any trace of civilization. On the border with Spain, this city of several utopias remained hidden until recently. Today, after the "discovery" is no longer a space of utopia is, rather, a dystopian place. Involved in a privatization and recovery process, what is possible to see there today is an absolutely paradoxical condition: the recovered part is dead because it has no use, the unrecovered part in deep deterioration, almost ruin, is full of life (the kind of life that arise from the abandonment).
The film is a wake-up call. A gesture that wants to be in his peculiar way, utopia, again. A film that questions the contemporary idea of Time and Present here reflected in the spatial impossibility of the place in direct confrontation with the forgetfulness now present across society. It does so through the use of an elongated, slow time (contemplative?) that enables reflection. Because there is no art without reflection as there's no reflection without time.
“Por i” might be a possibility of convening again utopia as an alternative to pragmatism ... maybe.

NOTE: "Por i" is a word that means maybe in Mirandese (autonomous language of Portugal's region where the film action is located).

Fernando José Pereira lives and works in Porto. He holds a Degree in Fine Arts from the University of Porto and a PhD in Fine Arts at the University of Vigo (with the thesis: Contemporary art.
