É incontestável que, depois de um período altamente anémico que viveu durante uns bons anos em meados da década passada, o techno tomou de assalto as preferências das pistas de dança actuais. Um dos factores com papel mais importante nesta ressurgência é que, conceptualmente, o techno é como um esqueleto dotado de enorme maleabilidade e adaptabilidade, que admite que lhe sejam aplicadas inúmeras peles. O galês Benjamin Damage tem-se mostrado como um dos mais aptos executantes desta arte de adaptar diferentes roupagens, tonalidades e ambientes, a uma estrutura precisa e aparentemente linear. As suas faixas apresentam-se como uma confluência perfeita de elementos techno europeus continentais, principalmente germânicos, com influências britânicas, uma espécie de cimeira Berlim/Londres onde as negociações chegam sempre a bom porto. Um produto da cena rave, com especial apetência pelo jungle e dubstep, Benjamin tornou-se um predilecto dos Modeselektor, junto com o seu parceiro Doc Daneeka após o lançamento de apenas um EP, e com a responsabilidade de ser o primeiro artista que não os próprios Modeselektor, a lançar um disco na entretanto extinta e já saudosa 50 Weapons, a label do duo germânico, em 2010. Correu tão bem, que a 50 Weapons se tornou a sua única e exclusiva casa musical, merecendo a distinção de ser dele o último álbum que a editora lançou, o massivo ‘Obsidian’, em 2015. Neste trabalho, com faixas monstruosas como ‘Monolith’, ‘Cosmonaut’ ou ‘Transmission’, Damage cristalizou o seu som, que levou muitos a declararem “a rave está de volta ao techno”. O que Benjamin cria são, acima de tudo, aqueles sons que mais ecoam nos nossos cérebros depois de uma longa sessão de horas de techno, os flashes de luz e euforia no meio da massa de graves e do estremecer dos kicks, aqueles momentos em que levantamos a cabeça, abrimos os olhos, e os sorrisos brilham e os abraços fluem. O estranho caso de Benjamin Damage é, afinal, a história de como a dança nos rejuvenesce. - Nuno Mendonça \\ ENGLISH // It´s undeniable that after a highly anaemic period that it endured for some years in the mid-noughties, techno took back by storm the preferences of modern dancefloors. One of the factors which undoubtedly played a bigger role in this resurgence is that, conceptually, techno is like a skeleton possessing huge adaptability and malleability, which can assume many different skins. Welshman Benjamin Damage has proven himself to be one of the most capable operators in this art of adapting many different clothings, tonalities and ambiences, to a very precise and apparently linear structure. His tracks present themselves as a perfect conjoining of continental europe techno elements, mainly german, with british influences, a sort of Berlin/London summit where negotiations always end in a mutually beneficial agreement. A product of the rave era, with a special appetite for jungle and early dubstep, Benjamin became championed by Modeselektor, after releasing just one EP with his production partner Doc Daneeka, and with the responsibility of being the first artist besides Modeselektor themselves, to release a record on the by now extinct and much missed 50 Weapons, the german duo´s own label, back in 2010. It all turned out so well, that 50 Weapon became his only, exclusive musical home, earning the distinction of being the name behind the last ever artist album to be put out on the label, the massive ‘Obsidian’, last year. In this release, Damage crystallized his style, with monster tracks like ‘Monolith’, ‘Cosmonaut’ or ‘Transmission’, leading many to declare “rave came back to techno”. So what Benjamin creates are, above all, those sounds that echo further inside our brains after a many hours long techno session, the light flashes and the euphoria in the midst of the sea of bass and the push and pull from the kicks, those moments when you put up your head, open your eyes, and smiles shine and hugs flow.
