MMiFF | Madeira Micro Film Festival 2016

The MMIFF Festival is a fantastic festival for creative, international and auteur cinema with an artistic claim. We present fantastic and surreal films from all over the world. With a limited capacity of 150 guests, this intimate and unique Festival is set to be a magical and adventurous experience for cineastes.

The fifth edition of MMiFF | Madeira Micro Film Festival 2016 will again take place at Cine Sol, a wonderful Art Deco cinema nestled atop a cliff. The cinema, which is almost 100 years old with spectacular views over the Atlantic Ocean is located in the sleepy, seaside village of “Ponta Do Sol”, on the volcanic island of Madeira. The village and its surroundings evoke culturally rich days gone by, preserved like a ghost town, with a mystical air eerily reminiscent of something out of the work of Lynch or Cronenberg.

Tony Conrad: Completely in the Present (2016 / Documentary / USA / 100 min) by Tyler Hubby with Tony Conrad, John Cale and David Grubbs. 22:30 at Cine Sol.

Tony Conrad was one the great American artists of our time, yet to the world at large he remains criminally under appreciated. Utilizing intimate footage of Tony and his collaborators shot over the last twenty-two years, as well as his own archive of recordings and films, Tony Conrad: Completely in the Present mirrors Conrad’s own playfully radical approach to art making. The non-linear structure allows Conrad to wildly free associate his streams of consciousness, revealing an honest and humane way of navigating a remarkable, creative life. Tony sat as head of jury at MMIFF in 2014 and took the stage at Cine Sol to announce the winning film. Tony passed away in April of this year, and this special screening will be in his honor.

Death by Death / Je me tue à le dire (2016 / Comedy / Belgium/France / 90min) by Xavier Seron with Myriam Boyer, Jean-Jacques Rausin and Serge Riaboukine. 21:00 at Cine Sol.

A hypochondriac mother/son duo fears the worst in this gorgeously stylized absurdist comedy from Belgium. Michel, an unsuccessful actor only moderately better as an appliance store employee, obsesses over death at the expense of enjoying life. Splitting his attention between a mother who refuses to move into an elder-care facility (she couldn’t leave behind her phalanx of feline children, see) and a girlfriend with renewed interest in her more successful ex, Michel can barely find the time to tend to his own neuroses. Gorgeous black-and-white cinematography pairs with hilarious deadpan humor in this award-winning, off-kilter comedy.
