Uma das temáticas mais abordadas pelo techno, é a do futuro que nos espera, e interação entre homem, máquina e tecnologia, enquadrados nesse futuro. Vindo de S. Francisco, Matrixxman é mais um DJ e produtor fascinado com ela. Mais um? Errado! A linha biográfica na sua conta de Twitter anuncia-nos “some cold ass futuristic shit” e percebemos logo que há muito de despretensioso, divertido e subversivo, no olhar que lança sobre a mesma. A distopia segundo Matrixxman não é cinzenta e sem esperança, é antes um espaço onde levamos vidas melhores graças à tecnologia. Charlie Duff, um auto-designado “idiota-sábio”, tem assim criado um mundo muito próprio que, apesar de pegar em sonoridades tradicionais do acid house de Chicago, techno e electro de detroit e da synth-music europeia, as imbui de leveza, descontração e uma inventividade e destreza ritmíca que casam bem com a sua personalidade exuberante e vontade de questionar os dogmas do techno, expressando-as a um ritmo frenético por para cima de uma dúzia de EPs em cerca de 3 anos, para labels não ao alcance de todos: Unknown To The Unknown, Spectral Sound, Dekmantel e Ghostly International, com o corolário no fascinante e variado LP “Homesick” nesta última. Aliás, sendo o house e o techno géneros que poucas vezes se dão bem com o formato longa-duração, “Homesick” é mesmo um triunfo de Matrixxman, ao ser aclamado um pouco em todo o lado como um dos melhores albuns de música electrónica de 2015. Coloquemos o assunto desta forma: se a música de Duff é inspiradora o suficiente para que o lendário Larry Heard tenha vontade de fazer não uma, mas 3 remixes de uma das suas faixas (‘Augmented’), então deve ser inspiradora que chegue para nós mesmo perdermos medo ao futuro e o recebermos em festa. Para Duff, a outrora exploradora e aventureira raça humana tem que ambicionar algo mais para o seu futuro do que, como afirma, produzir e consumir em massa cheeseburgers. The bio on his twitter account announces “some cold ass futuristic shit” and you can immediately perceive the unpretensious, fun and subversive look he casts upon them. Dystopia, according to Matrixxman, doesn´t have to be grey and hopeless. It is in fact a space where we lead better lives through technology. Charlie Duff, self-annointed “idiot-savant”, has thus created his very own world where, despite picking upon traditional sounds like those of Chicago acid-house, Detroit techno and electro, and european synth-music, he imbues them with a looseness, lightness and rhythmic invention and dexterity, which fit his exuberant personality and willingness to question techno´s dogmas, expressing them at frantic pace on over a dozen EPs in close to 3 years, which have come out on labels out of reach for most : Unknown To The Unknown, Spectral Sound, Dekmantel and Ghostly International, with his crowning achievement, the fascinating and varied LP ‘Homesick’, on the latter. Actually, knowing as we do that house and techno always had trouble with the long-play format, “Homesick” truly constitutes a triumph for Matrixxman, acclaimed a bit all over the place as it was, as one of electronic music´s top albums of 2015. Let´s put it this way, if Duff´s music is inspiring enough for someone like the legendary Larry Heard to remix one of his tracks not once, but three times (‘Augmented’), then it has to be inspiring enough for the rest of us to abandon our fear of the future and welcome it in party mode. For Duff, the once adventurous and exploratory human race, must covet more for it´s future than the mass production and consumption of cheeseburgers, like he says himself. So you see, lighten up! Matrixxman is the future with a smile, and he is all over and amongst us.
