1º CONGRESSO INTERNACIONAL DE JAZZ DA UNIVERSIDADE DE AVEIRO “MENSAGEIROS DO JAZZ: O PAPEL DOS DIVULGADORES DO JAZZ NA EUROPA” http://jazztalks.web.ua.pt/ A Universidade de Aveiro, através do INET-md (Instituto de Etnomusicologia – Centro de Estudos em Música e Dança), e do Centro de Estudos de Jazz (CEJ-UA) vai organizar, entre 8 e 9 de Novembro de 2013, o JAZZ TALKS: 1º Congresso Internacional de Jazz da Universidade de Aveiro, subordinado ao tema “Mensageiros do Jazz: o Papel dos Divulgadores do Jazz na Europa”. Este evento está integrado no projecto de investigação Mensageiros do Jazz: o Papel dos Divulgadores no Jazz em Portugal no séc. XX, actualmente em curso na Universidade de Aveiro. O Jazz Talks conta com a presença do prof. George McKay (Universidade de Salford) como orador convidado. No contexto da recepção do jazz na Europa por altura da I Guerra Mundial, e ao longo de todo o séc. XX, assume particular importância o papel daqueles que deram passos para promover e disseminar a nova música americana pelo continente: os seus divulgadores. Recorrendo aos meios de comunicação de massa ao dispor (imprensa periódica, rádio, televisão, cinema e internet), bem como a actividades de cariz associativo e expositivo (festivais de jazz, conferências, sessões fonográficas), estas figuras desenvolveram inúmeras acções, frequentemente desafiando quadros de valores conservadores e ideologias políticas adversas, e até enfrentando opressão explícita. Em alguns casos, o seu legado é ainda hoje visível nos testemunhos que produziram em nome do jazz, sejam eles instituições, obras escritas ou programas de rádio. O estudo do papel dos divulgadores de jazz permite-nos fazer justiça às suas acções e compreender melhor o percurso do jazz na Europa até hoje. Programa do evento: http://jazztalks.web.ua.pt/docs/programa_jazztalks.pdf // JAZZ TALKS: 1ST UNIVERSITY OF AVEIRO JAZZ CONFERENCE 2013 “JAZZ MESSENGERS: THE ROLE OF JAZZ PROMOTERS IN EUROPE” http://jazztalks.web.ua.pt/welcome_ENG.html The University of Aveiro, through its Centre for Jazz Studies (CEJ-UA) and in cooperation with INET-md (Instituto de Etnomusicologia – Centro de Estudos em Music e Dança) will be hosting, between 8th and 9th of November 2013, JAZZ TALKS: 1st University of Aveiro International Jazz Conference, on the topic “Jazz Messengers: The Role of Jazz Promoters in Europe”. This event is part of a research project entitled Jazz Messengers: The Role of Jazz Promoters in Portugal in the 20th Century, presently in progress at the University of Aveiro. The keynote speaker will be Professor George McKay (University of Salford). Within the context of the reception of jazz music around the time of World War I, and then throughout the whole twentieth-century, jazz promoters have proved particularly relevant, taking steps towards the promotion and dissemination of the new American music throughout the European continent. Making use of the mass media that were available at the time (periodic press, radio, television, cinema and internet), as well as through associative and expository activities (jazz festivals, conferences, phonographic sessions), these individuals have undertaken countless actions, frequently challenging adverse moral standards and political ideologies, and even facing explicit oppression. In some cases their legacy is still visible today, in the institutions, written works or radio shows that they have produced or founded. Studying the role of jazz promoters allows us to make justice to their actions and better understand the presence of jazz in Europe up until today.
