Time and experience made Jennifer Cardini a seminal DJ, known for her eclectic sets that effortlessly juggle between experimental techno, saturated nu disco and narcotic acid. It all started to gain shape when she moved to Paris in 1998, where she pioneered the raw Berlin sound. She was quickly recruited as a resident in two of the most influential clubs of the city of light, Le Pulp and Rex Club. Since then she has decided to call Cologne home instead, but the parisian Rex residency still stands - and that's also where her Correspondant nights happen regularly. While releasing her own music on essential labels like Crosstown Rebels Mobilee, Kill the DJ and Kompakt and touring the world with performances at seminal clubs like Panorama Bar, Nitsa or Fabric, Cardini developed a clear artistic vision. Pois no caso de Massimiliano Pagliara, esta íntima relação entre o DJing e a dança não podia ser mais concreta e real. Massi nasceu no Sul da Itália, mudando-se para Milão em 1997 para estudar teatro, dança e coreografia. Seguiu depois para Berlim para aprofundar os seus estudos em dança contemporânea, formalizando um percurso de fascínio pelo movimento do corpo que não é apenas esporádico e lúdico mas que é também académico. Nesta jornada desenvolve um igual fascínio pela outra variável desta equação: a música de dança. É enquanto clubber, na riquíssima cena musical de Berlim, a dançar nas pistas de clubes como o Ostgut (precursor do Berghain), que Massimiliano mergulha fundo no mundo da música electrónica, algo que o leva a comprar o seu primeiro sintetizador Roland SH-101 - um clássico. Depois disso não mais olhou para trás; lança o seu primeiro disco na incrível Balihu, de Daniel Wang, seguindo-se as edições em selos como Live At Robert Johnson, Rush Hour ou Meakusma. Coincidência ou não, a sua música incorpora elementos da música de dança mais icónica do seu país natal: o italo-disco. Outra coordenada importante para entender a sua música é a house de Chicago do final dos 1980s, com o seu funk maquinal e síncope tribal criados em máquinas de ritmos e sintetizadores tão primitivas como icónicas. In Massimiliano Pagliara's case, this intimate exchange between DJing and dance couldn't more actual and evident. Massi was born in the South of Italy, moving to Milan in 1997 to study theatre, dance and choreography. He then moved to Berlin to further his studies in contemporary dance, threading a path of fascination for the movement of the body that's not just sporadic and playful but also academic. During this journey he develops an equally intense fascination for the other variable in this equation: dance music. It's as a clubber, exploring the vastly rich musical scene of Berlin and getting down on dancefloors such as Ostgut (later to become Berghain), that Massimiliano plunges deep into the world of electronic music, which eventually leads to the purchase of his first classic synth - a Roland SH-101. From then on, Massi didn't look back; he released his first record on Daniel Wang's incredible Balihu label and follows it with releases on other key imprints such as Live At Robert Johnson, Rush Hour or Meakusma. Coincidence or not, his music arks back to the most iconic dance music style from his home country: italo-disco. Another crucial coordenate to understand his music is the late 80s house sound from Chicago, with its machine-like funk e tribal syncopation, created in drum machines and synths that are as primitive as they are iconic. Massimiliano Pagliara's fascination for dance music from the 80s also extends to the music-technology of the era, and his devotion to the original production methods of italo-disco and early house does set him apart from a lot of his peers. But far from just sticking to the original codes, Massi gives it all that he's got in his music, breathing soul into and adding that same quality that comes from an intimate understanding of the body and the dancefloor. This allows him to venture fearlessly through sleazier, more seductive BPMs. This same romance of the movement makes him thrive in the album format (something rare in dance music) as well as in adventurous DJ sessions with strong sense of narrative and a vast knowledge of the past and present. It was for DJs like Massi that the dream-machine of Sta. Apolónia was created.
