24º CURTAS VILA DO CONDE
International Film Festival
9-17 JUL
www.curtas.pt

The film history of Curtas Vila do Conde of the last 24 years is filled with great films. That is the reason why many of the region cinephiles feel that they are sons of the festival: it was on the film sessions, in each year’s July, that they learned to love cinema and the films that surprise. In 2016, Curtas offers a small homage to cinema and its history, with several screenings across several programs. On top of that, and confirming what has been winning formula on the last years, there will be film concerts for everyone, in another edition of Stereo.

As before, the festival will have is core on the competitions: international, experimental, Portuguese, music videos, Curtinhas (films for kids) and Take One!, whose sessions show the beating heart of contemporary cinema. It is from that cinema that the 2016 In Focus retrospective is made of, dedicated to the Borderline Films collective, whose authors – Antonio Campos, Sean Durkin and Josh Mond – have been offering a renovation of the American indie cinema. Another collective – in this case, a two-man collective – has also been generating great enthusiasm and are at Vila do Conde with a special mission: João Pedro Rodrigues and João Rui Guerra da Mata will take charge of Solar for their first cinematic exhibition in Portugal. And, of course, let us not forget the future of the festival: Curtinhas will always be in fashion, with a special programme for the younger crowd.

This year, the cinema history is spread throughout the programme of the festival. It is not just the official history, but also the vanguard and the experimental history that is present. On Stereo, for example, not only the concert from The Greg Foat Group (with classics from the 20’s) but also Tindersticks (with special commission to filmmakers that have already inscribed their name in the history of cinema), will show how the music can be intimately connected to this cinephilia. Another of the highlights will be the Carte Blanche that João Pedro Rodrigues and João Rui Guerra da Mata imagined. From Keaton to Beckett, with Warhol, Tati or Kenneth Anger in between, these screenings are a true lesson on subversive cinema. On this context we can also incorporate the three sessions dedicated to the Audiovisual Essays. A format made popular by the new digital tools, the audiovisual essay takes a new look on films, analysing its structures and their likeliness’s. It is a new genre of cinephilia, sometimes freer, sometimes more academic and analytical. On this section, the archaeology of the genre will be presented, with historical films from, amongst others, Bruce Conner, Dara Birnbaum or Jean-Luc Godard. To top of this transversal programme, Curtas Vila do Conde hosts a Workshop of Film Criticism, bringing film critics, filmmakers and scholars with a group of aspiring students to the art of writing about cinema.

One of the most important events on Vila do Conde nights are the Film-Concerts, where music and cinema join together in a creative result. Once again, this year’s edition will have many and good concerts from bands and musicians like Tindersticks, Jay-Jay Johanson, The Legendary Tigerman and The Greg Foat Group. Spearheading this section is obviously the British band Tindersticks that will present for the first time in Portugal, a special show, prepared as a film-concert. “The Waiting Room” joins the latest album of the band with a set of short-films prepared just for the film-concert, from authors such as Christoph Girardet, Claire Denis or even the lead singer Stuart A. Staples. It will be one of the nights of the festival! Another great name of this edition is Jay-Jay Johanson that will present his latest album, “Opium” – clearly more pop and rock -, in an audiovisual show. Regular presence on Teatro Municipal stage is The Legendary Tigerman, which returns this year with a surprising show, “How To Become Nothing”, presented in world premiere, that brought together the musician, the photographer Rita Lino and the director Pedro Maia, on a road-trip through the Californian desert. Finally, for the first time in Portugal, The Greg Foat Group, the six-man jazz ensemble, lead by the talented musician Greg Foat and that comes on stage on the festival to present, also as a premiere, “Visual Music”, an original soundtrack to vanguard cinema classics.

The festival present, this year, two retrospectives with very different characteristics: the American collective Borderline Films will present part of their most significant works; and the duo João Pedro Rodrigues and João Rui Guerra da Mata will make their first cinematic exhibition on Solar, that will be accompanied by a Carte Blanche. Antonio Campos, Sean Durkin and Josh Mond are the three craftsmen of Borderline Films. Each directs a film in turn, while the others produce it. The works that have been released - such as “Simon Killer”, “Martha Marcy May Marlene” or “James White” - are creative variations of the American independent cinema, in everyday stories from the mainstream cinema (e.g. thriller), but here are deliciously subverted. They are excellent films to discover. The duo João Pedro Rodrigues and João Nuno Guerra da Mata is broadly known to the festival: they are two reference filmmakers of the Portuguese cinema and with works of major importance like “O Fantasma” (solely directed by João Pedro Rodrigues) or “The Last Time I Saw Macao”. Curtas has challenged the duo to create their first cinematic exhibition on Solar, which they called “From the Pearl River to the River Ave”. Finally, Curtas Vila do Conde continues to present its most attended competition sessions. International, Portuguese, Experimental, Music Video, Take One! (school films), and Curtinhas (films for kids). The best of the contemporary cinema is here, with films that question conventions, genres and themes to provide us with a panoramic view of our days. And the festival also offers places where children may grow fond of cinema: sessions, workshops and the classic “Brincar ao Cinema” area, where children are aided by teachers, while parents go to our sessions.

So, in 2016, Curtas look to the history and to the present of the seventh art, knowing that the cinema surprises us and allow us to exalt life. The programme that was imagined is, for that reason, diverse, with different proposals to different audiences, always with the best of the contemporary cinema. In Vila do Conde, from 9 to 17 of July, the festival celebrates again the cinephilia that is in each one of us. You can not miss it!
