RUSH é um termo que pode ser usado numa infinitude de contextos mas cujos vários significados convergem para uma ideia dominante, mesmo se exprimível de diferentes maneiras: a urgência em fazer, a vontade de sentir, o nervo de querer. É disso que nasce esta noite. Num tempo em que os nomes e alinhamentos se repetem num star system estabelecido e previsível que apela, cada vez mais, ao reconhecimento em vez da descoberta, é também vital para o Lux pesquisar novos caminhos e partilhar novas pistas para um futuro que acontece já hoje. O RUSH é isso. Não é jogar pelo seguro, nem fazer mais do mesmo. É arriscar naquilo em que se acredita. É encontrar e ir buscar aqueles que interessa ver e ouvir já, contagiando a urgência desse entusiasmo com um público exigente e curioso: é agora, porque é agora que tem de ser... Não podemos esperar! Concertos, live acts ou djs, vão ser pessoas NOVAS. Que nunca vieram ao Lux, ou a Lisboa, ou a Portugal. Ou que, eventualmente, até já tenham passado por cá, mas não com o protagonismo que merecem. Este é o seu (e o nosso) tempo. Solar Em meados dos anos 90, quem fosse à Berkley Marina, na baía de São Francisco, ao fim da tarde, podia encontrar Solar Langevin, a.k.a. Solar, a dar os seus primeiros passos como DJ. A filosofia já era original, generosa e cheia de sonho: dançar ao ar livre, a ver o pôr-do-sol, ao som de música que faz mexer, isto é, disco, industrial, EBM, electro, house e techno. Solar ia armado, na altura, apenas de um sistema de som e um gerador. Mas ano após ano o seu Sunset Sound System cresceu e hoje acolhe largos milhares de pessoas todos os meses. Estes 20 anos foram passados, na sua maioria, enquanto herói local: fora da Califórnia, era relativamente normal nunca ter ouvido falar dele. Até há poucos anos. Solar Langevin ultrapassou esse estatuto há relativamente pouco tempo quando Dixon, antes de entrar na cabine numa das festas Sunset em São Francisco, o ouviu a fazer o warm-up. Ficou imediatamente impressionado com o seu estilo e convidou Solar para o acompanhar, e à sua crew da Innervisions, numa tournée Europeia. Desde então criou mais uma série de festas, No Way Back, e passou por festivais como o Dekmantel e Love International; clubes como o Panorama Bar ou Trouw e tocou ao lado de lendas como Joey Beltram. Fundindo o lado mais electrizante e onírico da música de dança clássica e vanguardista, Solar criou uma reputação sólida como selector devoto, tão hábil a misturar como a escolher música insuspeita de vários géneros e gerações, conseguindo sempre devolver frescura, diversão e optimismo sem se adaptar a tendências. Serão porventura estes os pilares de um bom DJ, e Solar tem-nos todos bem edificados. Duas décadas de quase-anonimato global aperfeiçoaram uma das estrelas mais brilhantes deste cosmos que dançamos. Marc Piñol Em 1994 Marc Piñol ainda não era DJ, mas já estava ao serviço das movimentações sónicas que amava como jornalista musical. Em 1997 começou a misturar discos, e passado dois anos era residente do icónico Nitsa Club de Barcelona, casa onde se manteve durante 14 anos, afinando o seu DJing ao ponto de ser eleito várias vezes o melhor disc jockey do ano pelas mais importantes revistas de música espanholas. A palavra, naturalmente, espalhou-se e hoje Marc Piñol é, por exemplo, um dos DJ favoritos de Ivan Smagghe: "É o melhor residente que conheço e um dos meus DJs preferidos. Claro que temos sempre vários favoritos, dependendo da hora, do ambiente, do estilo. Mas tocar com ele é como tocar com uma versão de mim mesmo que ainda me consegue surpreender: desde o gosto por discos quase-trance até disco-pop obscuro" Ver a aura de uma pista de dança e procurar na mala um disco a condizer. Esse é o forte de Marc Pinõl, e na sua mala invejável cabe Electro, Techno, Drum ’n Bass, Rock, New Wave, House, Pop, Punk e, claro, os seus favoritos: acid e disco. Essa sensibilidade foi aperfeiçoada nas últimas duas décadas, passadas a fazer warm-ups para DJs tão diversos como Andrew Weatherall, Todd Terry, DJ Krush, Larry Heard ou Dave Clarke. Hoje, Piñol é parte da família Hivern Discs de John Talabot, outro dos seus fãs assumidos desde os dias do Nitsa. Na reputada etiqueta, Marc Piñol compõe mais um pouco do seu quadro sónico, editando produções e remixes em colaboração com Hugo Capablanca. In a time when the names and the lineups repeat themselves in an established and predictable star system that appeals more and more to recognition rather than discovery, it’s also vital for LUX to search for new paths and to share new clues for a future that’s happening today. That’s what RUSH is. It’s neither following the sure path nor doing more of the same. It’s taking risks with what we believe. It’s searching and finding those who are worth listening to and be seen right now, enticing a demanding and curious audience with the urge of that enthusiasm: it’s now because it has to be … we can’t wait any longer! Concerts, live acts or DJs, there’s gonna be new PEOPLE. Some that have never been to LUX, to Lisbon, or to Portugal. Or that might have been here but without the recognition they deserve. This is your (and our) time. Solar If you happened to be around the Berkley Marina in San Francisco during the mid-90s, chances are that you've witnessed the magic of Solar Langevin a.k.a. Solar's first steps as a DJ. The philosophy behind those sessions was already singular, generous and dreamy back then: dancing outdoors in the sunset, to the beat of music designed to move your bones, meaning disco, industrial, EBM, electro, house and techno. At the time, Solar would come equipped only with a sound system and a generator, but his Sunset Sound System grew vastly throughout the years and now holds monthly parties for several thousands of ravers. Solar has spent these last 20 years mostly as a local hero and, outside California, it would be quite normal for one to never have heard of him. Until recently, that is. Solar's international exposure came very recently after being discovered by scene luminary Dixon. Story goes that Dixon, moments before getting in the booth at one of Solar's Sunset parties in San Francisco, was so impressed by his warm-up set that he invited Solar to join him and his Innervisions crew in an European tour. Since then he started another series of parties callled No Way Back and shared his craft in a number of festivals such as Dekmantel or Love International, as well as in revered clubs like Panorama Bar or the now defunct Trow, playing next to legends such as Joey Beltram. Fusing the most electrifying, oneiric side of both classic and forward-thinking dance music, Solar created a solid reputation as a devoted selector, skilled at blending and picking unsuspecting music of many genres and generations, managing to deliver fresh, fun, optimistic sets time and time again without adapting to trends. These are perhaps the cornerstones of a good DJ, and Solar has erected them solidly. Two decades of global quasi-anonymity perfected one of the brightest starts in this cosmos we all dance in. Marc Piñol In 1994, Marc Piñol wasn't a DJ yet, but he was already serving the sonic movements he loved as a music journalist. In 1997 he started to mix records, and two years later he landed a residency at Barcelona's iconic Nitsa Club, where he stayed for 14 years, fine-tuning his DJ skills to the point of being elected best DJ of the year several times by some of the most important spanish music magazines. The word naturally spread and today Marc Piñol is, for example, one of Ivan Smagghe's favourite DJs: "he is the best resident I know and one of my favourite DJs. Of course, one should have many 'favourite DJs'. For all hours, moods and genres. But playing with him is like playing with a version of myself that could still surprise me: from the acquired taste for borderline trance records to warped up disco pop" Observing the aura of a dance floor and matching it with the right record. That's Marc Piñol's forte, and in his enviable record bag there's space for Electro, Techno, Drum ’n Bass, Rock, New Wave, House, Pop, Punk and, of course, his favourites: acid and disco. That sensibility was perfected in the past two decades, which were spent doing warm-ups for DJs as diverse as Andrew Weatherall, Todd Terry, DJ Krush, Larry Heard or Dave Clarke. Today, Piñol is part of the Hivern Discs family, whose founder John Talabot has been one of his biggest fans since the Nitsa days.
