Se calhar já o escrevemos antes, mas dançar é, basicamente, a coisa mais divertida que se pode fazer com roupa vestida. Claro que dançar não é só diversão, pode ser, tratando-se também de uma forma de expressão artística, uma série de outras coisas mais sérias. E há DJs que levam a sua diversão e a de quem o escuta muito a sério. Há poucos exemplos melhores deste tipo de DJ, do que Jackmaster. A imagem que o escocês Jack Revill construíu é, de facto, a de alguém que, onde quer que vá, leva a festa consigo. Aquele amigo que nos vai buscar a casa para nos levar à festa, conta anedotas, passa-nos copos para a mão, segura-nos no cabelo quando passamos mal, e no fim ainda nos deixa em casa, levados em ombros. Tudo metaforicamente, claro. Porque na verdade ele faz-nos companhia do princípio ao fim da festa a passar discos de forma ousada, fulminante e tecnicamente inatacável, ao longo de sets com house, garage, techno, disco e não só, capazes de pôr a mexer as juntas mais enferrujadas. De onde a música vem, e como se tornou o gozão Revill tão fabuloso, é a parte séria. Ele diz que passa 75% do tempo em que está acordado, a pensar como pode ser melhor DJ. Como se não bastasse a repetida presença no top 10 do Resident Advisor. E antes de o ser, já influenciava as colecções de discos de todos os que são alguém na actual cena do UK, como curador e comprador da famosa loja e distribuidora britânica Rubadub (Ben UFO que o diga). Pois é, a diversão dá muito trabalho. Elevar a diversão a uma forma arte, dá ainda mais. Se calhar, o segredo de Jackmaster é que, sabendo que o que faz é coisa séria, não se esconde de dizer que afinal, um DJ é um alguém que vive a tocar a música dos outros, não se levando muito a sério, porque é a estrela não é ele, como o próprio diz. Of course, dancing is not just fun, it can be, as the artform it often is, a lot of serious stuff too. And there´s DJs who take their fun and the fun of those who listen to him, quite seriously. You won´t find many better examples of this kind of DJ, than Jackmaster. The image that scotsman Jack Revill has built is, in fact, of someone who brings the party with him, wherever he goes. He´s that mate who picks you up to take you to the party, tells jokes, throws some beers your way, holds your hair when you feel sick, and still drags you to your home when it´s all over. All of this metaphorically, of course. He actually keeps you company from beginning to end of the party by playing records in a bold, brash and technically unassailable way, doing sets filled with house, garage, techno, disco and more, able to make even those with the rustiest joints move. Where all that music comes from, and how did the fun-loving Revill become so amazing at this, is the serious bit. He says he spends 75% of his waking hours thinking about how he can become a better DJ. As if being repeatedly in the Resident Advisor top 10 wasn´t enough. And even before becoming a DJ, he was already influencing the record collections of everyone that´s anyone it the UK underground scene, as a curator and buyer for famous UK store and distributor, Rubadub. Just ask Ben UFO. That´s right, fun is a lot of work. Turning fun into an art form is even more work. Maybe Jackmaster´s secret is that, knowing that what he´s trying to achieve is quite serious, he doesn´t shy away from telling us that a DJ is just someone playing other people´s records, thus not taking himself too serious, and knowing that DJ is not, after all, the star of the party, as he says himself.
