Noite MDR Official • MARCEL DETTMANN • Answer Code Request | live • Anthony Parasole MARCEL DETTMANN Não há muito para dizer sobre Marcel Dettmann, como DJ, que nao tenhamos dito já, das outras vezes que trouxe até nós o seu estilo eficaz, militante e envolvente, de passar techno. Há razões mais que suficientes e conhecidas pelas quais o seu nome, junto com os de vários parceiros de editora na Ostgut Ton, e de clube, no Berghain, se tornaram sinónimos do techno moderno, nomes que daqui por décadas serão recordados como emblemáticos do ressurgimento e subsequente popularidade do techno nos últimos anos. Mas não deixemos nunca que o mediatismo de Dettmann nos faça esquecer que cada set seu traz algo de novo na manga que podemos não ter visto antes. Numa dada noite pode sentir apetência por um set mais groovy, ou com mais influências EBM, por exemplo. Marcel é um dos grandes, e há muitos anos que o é, pois é dos que percebe que ficar no topo, depois de lá chegar, dá muito trabalho. Quem acompanha desde a primeira hora o seu trabalho de produção ou a forma como gere a label que esta noite homenageamos, a sua MDR, percebe as muitas camadas que se escondem por baixo da superfície, em tudo o que Dettmann faz. Por exemplo, o lado mais brincalhão que mostrou em “Vengeance”, a sua colaboração com Levon Vincent de final de 2015. E a sua faceta de fã eterno de música que ganha asas na curadoria da MDR, a quem devemos tantas descobertas sem as quais já não passamos, cada fim de semana, nas pistas: Answer Code Request e Anthony Parasole, sim, mas também Kobosil, Norman Nodge, Dario Zenker, entre outros. Faz sentido por isso dizer que esta noite celebramos a editora de Marcel Dettmann, mas também as muitas outras noites grandiosas que nos tem dado. O techno não seria o mesmo sem ele, e por consequência, nós também não. Este é daqueles agradecimentos que pode e deve ser dado por antecipação: Obrigado Marcel, por tudo. És sempre bem-vindo! ANSWER CODE REQUEST Imaginemos o techno como um livro de jogos para crianças. Daqueles com figuras para colorir, passatempos, labirintos e quebra-cabeças. Há produtores que são como estes últimos, indecifráveis. Outros gostam de criar longos e tortuosos labirintos sónicos para nossa perdição. Há os que só servem para ocupar tempo até algo de mais interessante se nos oferecer. E no que toca a colorir, há aqueles, como Answer Code Request, que Marcel Dettmann conheceu na juventude como Patrick Gräser, que pintam o livro com as cores mais vivas do espectro, embora muito poucos o façam com a mesma vibrância dele. Aliás, tem feito mais que isso, ele próprio cria livros de jogos inteiros, fascinantes, viciantes, complexos, com um balanço perfeito de diversão, imaginação e reflexão. E nós, crianças permanentemente boquiabertas com a descoberta das prendas que ele nos dá. Veja-se o último brinquedo, o EP “Calm Down”, lançado há poucos meses na MDR de Dettmann, que esta noite dita lei na nossa pista. O desenrolar das espiras mostra-nos techno rolante e hipnótico a partilhar espaço com rajadas de beats quebrados envoltos em melodias que vão do melancólico ao triunfante num abrir e fechar de olhos, intercalados com passagens experimentais a comprovar a maturidade e mestria técnica com que Patrick surgiu na cena desde que se lançou. Deste trabalho, como de outros por si editados na mesma MDR ou na Ostgut Ton, resulta muitas vezes a sensação de que ouvir a música de Answer Code Request é como olhar fixamente para um strobe multicolor. Quando desviamos o olhar por uns segundos para a escuridão, esta torna-se afinal uma alucinação feita de pontos de luz. É possível ver sons e ouvir cores? Answer Code Request vai provar-vos que sim. ANTHONY PARASOLE Aquando das suas duas passagens anteriores pela cabine da nossa disco, houve quem estranhasse a insistente referência a luminárias do house nova-iorquino, quando falávamos de Anthony Parasole, para descrever como tocava. Afinal de contas, Parasole produz techno. Ele é um DJ de techno. E faz ambas coisas de forma incrível. Só que há uma atitude nova-iorquina nos DJ e produtores de lá oriundos, que extravasa o género a que algum deles em particular se dedica. À falta de melhor palavra, há uma na língua inglesa que define bem essa atitude: “fierce”. Algo como uma mistura de ferocidade, coragem e irreverência, tudo palavras que Anthony Parasole podia usar como tatuagens entre as muitas que ostenta. Reza a lenda que foi esta postura, acompanhada de uma colecção de discos fabulosa, que levou Marcel Dettmann a não descansar enquanto não o editasse na MDR, e não o juntasse à família Ostgut. Isto foi há menos de 3 anos, e desde então Parasole tem arrasado pistas pelo mundo fora, como bem sabe quem o viu por cá. Debitando uma sonoridade que é uma espécie de híbrido furioso do som de labels como Strictly Rhythm e Tresor, Anthony Parasole trata a mesa de mistura como de uma rixa de rua se tratasse, atacando-a como se cada mistura representasse a hipótese de sobreviver mais uns dias nas duras ruas da Nova Ioque dominada por gangues, em que cresceu. Ou como se ambos os pratos fossem cestos numa quadra de basquetebol, desporto que ele tanto ama, onde Parasole sabe sempre quando fazer a assistência perfeita e onde cada lançamento que faz é decisivo. Com o seu som percussivo, sujo e cheio da clássica atitude nova-iorquina, Anthony Parasole vai-nos mostrar porque é um dos MVPs do techno dos nossos tempos. Textos: Nuno Mendonça \\ english version // MARCEL DETTMANN There´s not much else to say about Marcel Dettmann, as a DJ, that we haven´t said before, in past occasions where he brought to us his efficient, militant and engrossing style. There´s more than enough well-known reasons why his name, along with those of his labelmates in Ostgut Ton and club colleagues at Berghain, have become synonymous with modern techno, names which in decades to come will be remembered as symbols of the rebirth of techno and subsequent popularity, which we´ve all seen these past few years. But Dettmann´s visibility shouldn´t let us forget that every set he plays brings something new to the table which you won´t have heard before. On any given night he might feel like getting a little groovier, or show off his EBM influences, for example. Marcel really is one of the greats, and he has been so for years, because he knows that staying at the top, after actually getting there, requires a lot of hard work. Those who´ve followed his production work from the start, and how he manages the label we pay tribute to tonight, his own MDR, knows that there are a lot of layers beneath the surface of all that Dettmann does. A late example is the more playful side he´s shown on “Vengeance”, his collab with Levon Vincent from late last year. And the way he´s always remained a music fan at heart truly shines on he curates MDR, placing us in his debt for so many discoveries we can´t do without anymore, every weekend on dancefloors all over the world: Answer Code Request and Anthony Parasole, of course, but also Kobosil, Norman Nodge, Dario Zenker, amongst others. So it really makes sense to say that tonight we celebrate Marcel Dettmann´s label, but also the many memorable nights he´s given us. Techno really wouldn´t be the same without him, and consequently, we wouldn´t be the same either. This is an ackowledgement that should and can be given by anticipation: Thank you Marcel, for everything, and you are most welcome, anytime! ANSWER CODE REQUEST Imagine techno as a children´s playbook. Like those with pictures to color in, time-wasters, labyrinths and puzzles. Some producers like the latter, undecipherable. Others like to create long and tortuous sonic labyrinths. Some are just good enough to kill some time until something interesting happens. And when it comes to coloring, there are those like Answer Code Request, who Marcel Dettmann knows since his teenage years as Patrick Gräser, who paint the book with the most vivid colors in the spectrum, although few do it with as much vibrancy as he does. Actually, he´s been doing more than that, he creates whole playbooks, fascinating, addictive, complex, with a perfect balance of fun, imagination and thought. And we´re the kids permanently in awe of the gifts he brings us. Just look at his latest toy, the “Calm Down” EP, released just a few months ago on Dettmann´s MDR, the label ruling our dancefloor tonight. As the spires unfurl, you´ll find rolling, hypnotic techno sharing space with flurries of broken beats soaked in melodies ranging from melancholic to triumphant in the blink of an eye, interspersed with experimental passages attesting to the maturity and technical prowess Patrick has displayed since coming up in the scene. From this release, as from others he put out on MDR or Ostgut Ton, you often get the feeling that listening to Answer Code Request´s music is like staring into a multicolored strobe. Once you avert your eyes to the darkness again, it becomes an hallucination made of a million points of light. Can we see sounds and hear colors? Answer Code Request will prove that we can. ANTHONY PARASOLE The previous two times he was here, some people found it strange that we insistently referenced New York house music luminaries when writing about Anthony Parasole, in order to describe how he played records. After all, Parasole is a techno producer. He is a techno DJ. And does both amazingly. The thing is, there is a “New Yor attitude” in DJs and producers coming from there. There´s a word which perfectly defines that attitude: Fierceness. A mix of ferocity, courage and irreverence, all words Anthony Parasole could have as tattoos amongst the many he already sports. Legend has it that it was this attitude, along with a mind-blowing record collection, that made Marcel Dettmann restless until he released his music on MDR and made Parasole join the Ostgut Ton family. This was less than 3 years ago, and since then, Parasole has been wrecking dancefloors all over the word, as those who´ve seen them here can testify to. Blasting out a sort of furious hybrid of the sounds of labels like Strictly Rhythm and Tresor, Anthony Parasole faces the mixer as if he was going into a street fight, as if every mux is a chance to survive another day in the grimy streets of the gang-dominated New York where he grew up. Or as if both decks were the hoops in a basketball court, a sport he loves so much, where he always knows the timing for a perfect assist and every ball he shoots is a decisive one. With his dirty, percussive sound, full of that classic New York attitude, Anthony Parasole is going to show us why he is one of modern techno´s MVPs. Words: Nuno Mendonça
