House que se reinventa, muda de forma, funde, é declarado morto, volta em glória (nunca morreu, tontos!) e continua, volvidos 30 anos – mais coisa menos coisa, não temos pretensão a historiadores – a arrebatar multidões. Derrick Carter é, indubitavelmente, um daqueles que, vistas bem as coisas (ou ouvidas), já fundiu se fundiu com o estilo, de tanto que o carregou e ajudou a moldar. Porque Derrick Carter, para além de sinónimo de House, é sinónimo deste “groove” esta palavra cuja tradução é difícil (tente-se “balanço”) mas que se sente e topa a milhas. É a batida base infectada por uma linha de baixo que magicamente nos faz saber dançar, são todos os elementos reunidos para um só fim. E é isto que ele sabe melhor fazer e, agora que praticamente deixou a produção musical de lado, é o que declara e o que executa, fim de semana após fim de semana: chega, leva uma pista aos píncaros, e vai embora até ao próximo destino. Que trabalha para ser o nosso novo DJ favorito, uma e outra vez – mesmo embora residente do já lendário Smart Bar em Chicago, a sua vida é feita em viagem com a mala de discos. Sem hypes, sem entrar em listas de popularidade do momento, Derrick Carter é uma âncora a quem podemos sempre retornar. Uma noite para os que já o conhecem – os que ainda não, já sabemos que vão ficar fãs. House that is ever reinventing itself, shape shifting, fusing, being declared dead (it was never dead, fools!), coming back and keeping on, 30 years – or so, we’re not aiming to be historians – strong and still moving the crowds. Derrick Carter is, without doubt, one of those who have fused themselves with the genre, by means of carrying it forward and shaping it. He became synonymous not only with House but with groove, that thing that is hard to be defined but surely easy to be felt when it’s there – those basslines snaking around beats, all elements tuned to the same purpose: dance. This is what he does best and, now that he’s not making much new music, what he declares himself to be doing week after week: arriving, playing a storming set and then leaving for the next party. A hustling DJ, he says, working to be our favourite DJ over and over again – even though he’s a resident at the already legendary Smart Bar in Chicago, his life is filled with travelling along his record bag.
