Isso. Podem dizê-lo, de frase bem arremessada ao tecto, quando iluminado de verde. Podem repeti-lo, até, de olhos fechados e relembrar o que os faz ser, quase com alguma sacanice, tão bons e tão únicos, que mereça quase chamar-lhes um nome. Todos os nomes. Os que queiram além do apelido de família que tem vindo a conduzir-nos por quilómetros de pista. 2manydjs são os irmãos Stephen e David Dewaele, e têm vindo a manter-se, por mais de uma década, a brasa que incendeia cartazes no mundo inteiro, sob a certeza de que vai haver festa. E vai, pois. Se houve coisa que o pouco filtrado documentário ‘Part of The Weekend Never Dies’ nos esclareceu é que os irmãos Dewaele fazem o que lhes apetece. E que o apetite deles é voraz, como bons belgas que são. Não fosse assim e não seriam responsáveis pelo desaguisado musical de representarem, quase em simultâneo, a essência dos Soulwax, a alma das Night Versions e os eixos do projecto Radio Soulwax – que lhes soma todas as pontas soltas. Eles são isto e são mais, na verdade. É como se no universo se tivesse aberto um buraco negro que subitamente fez gravitar um sem número de música pujante sobre eles, a que não servem grandes rótulos, para que pudessem brincar e fazer-nos correr atrás, depois. Se Soulwax é a banda rock e Night Versions a versão ‘live’ das remisturas que fazem de si próprios, 2manydjs é a versão do desassossego na estrada, que fez com que Stephen e David se virassem para os pratos e para os discos, sem amarras, começando a passar som depois dos concertos dados, um atrás do outro. Nascem neste formato, na verdade, até com alguma displicência, a partir do programa de rádio ‘Hang the DJ’: só porque gostam de música como qualquer bom belga e só porque são diggers sem paralelo, podendo com essa capacidade agitar produtores, labels, bandas e outros DJs revisitados nos bootlegs e mash-ups em que se especializaram – não à ‘Girl Talk’, não, que eles chegaram muito antes e construíram muito (muito) mais. Das combinações e remisturas pouco prováveis do disco com hip-hop, pop-rock com new wave, ora sacudidos com funk ora com electrónica corpulenta, os 2Many DJs são pioneiros de um movimento mash-up que ignora géneros ou rótulos e que, por isso mesmo, cria um rasto hipnótico desde “As Heard on Radio Soulwax” (Partes 1 e 2). Crescemos, sim, entre as palmas de Salt’N’Pepa e um Push It reconvertido com The Stooges, e os remixes prog-rock-raving-electro que embrulham Tiga, Justice, Daft Punk, Basement Jaxx, MGMT ou LCD Soundsystem com uma assinatura inconfundível, homenageada por Klaxons, Erol Alkan ou James Murphy – colega no projecto Despacio onde, mais do que um trio, se forma um ‘megabot-soundsystem-costumizado’. Logo não podemos ser nós a chamar disto ou daquilo. Eles são muita coisa, tanta. E, ó, que filhos da mãe… Que não farão outra coisa se não fazer-nos dançar, por causa disso. Outra vez. - Ana Sofia Castanho Relaxed Muscle Forte em duplas, esta noite não deixa escapar a presença de Jarvis Cocker e Jason Buckle. Jarvis, dos eternos ‘Pulp’, Jason do trio de electrónica ‘All Seeing I’. E não, já não vão aparecer pintados, disfarçados de maquilhagem trashy, com um estalar de dedos de conversa afiada, depravada e violenta, em fatos de esqueleto que abanavam entre pubs e clubs londrinos. Podiam vir assim, mas na verdade já se reinventaram sem máscara, descolando-se aos poucos e individualmente dos projectos que lhes podiam ainda trazer alguma rotulagem ao ouvido, enquanto dupla – e talvez por isso a admiração dos 2Many DJs por eles continue a crescer. Relaxed Muscle é, por natureza, rock. E pop. E punk. E electro. É uma tensão de guitarra libertadora, até, que arrasta beats electrónicos para esferas indizíveis à voz de Jarvis Cocker, voz que temos ouvido recorrentemente a protagonizar misturas de Boys Noize, Erol Alkan e Discodeine. Música que com remate de sensualidade, que só por isso, faz querer seguir para mais. - Ana Sofia Castanho The 2 Bears Fixa-te aí no meio e deixa-te levar. É que a rede de Raf Rendell dos Greco Roman Soundsystem e Joe Goddard dos Hot Chip, depois de lançada, não costuma deixar por onde fugir... fazendo a noite parecer curta para o tanto que se lhe quer. The 2 Bears são uma dupla poderosíssima. E são-no, com o condão de trazer a diversão direita à pista e de nela resgatarem almas com disco e afro-funk polvilhado de purpurina, sob as remeniscências de um house dos anos 90 que sobe o volume atingindo facilmente o estado de hino, de mãos ao ar, onde o ‘feel good’ é bem palpável. Monta-se um recreio simples, despretensioso, com uma orquestração de sorrisos entre beats e vozes, harmonias que comandam rapidamente à euforia, em crescendos sem esforço. O mais recente álbum ‘The Night is Young’ assim o demonstra. E porquê? Porque para a dupla, a música de dança deve ser dessa genuinidade, um momento de festa para guardar e ficar na memória naquele momento exacto em que te deixas ir. - Ana Sofia Castanho Legowelt Há quase 20 anos que Danny Wolfers faz coisas muito importantes e sérias com a música, sempre com ar de quem está permanentemente em modo lúdico, quase brincalhão. Se formos ao seu site oficial, deparamo-nos com algo que parece ter sido concebido num Commodore Amiga (uma máquina que é um fetiche de Wolfers) algures no final dos anos 90. Mas não. É assim por escolha de Danny, e não é assim por se tratar de nostalgia barata, mas sim de um retro-futurismo estilizado que traduz muita da essência da música de Legowelt. Uma nota importante: Legowelt é só um dos cerca de 20 “alias” que Wolfers usa para editar música. Sucede que é o que ele mais usa e o que mais se popularizou. E no entanto, nem o nome Legowelt é fácil de caracterizar. A raíz é house e techno clássico, com um toque europeu, mas o som é dado a devaneios electro e ambient, imbuídos de transmissões emitidas do reino místico e captadas por Wolfers na multitude de máquinas que forram o seu estúdio. Sim, porque o misticismo é algo de muito importante para ele, que pretende claramente influir na nossa consciência e espírito, enquanto nos move com os seus ritmos. Difuso quanto baste mas sem vibrações negativas, porque afinal, a música deve também ser uma libertação da alma. Enumerar edições, labels, etc, é algo de somenos quando falamos de alguém cujo dia-a-dia é, essencialmente, acordar, ligar as máquinas, e fazê-las cantar até ser noite. Concentremo-nos em escutar essa canção e sonhar com Legowelt. Sonhar com um futuro que pode ser, construído com a ajuda dele e feito do o melhor do que já foi. - Nuno Mendonça Asa Moto Oli e Gilles são Asa Moto, a mais recente e misteriosa dupla lançada pela editora DEEWEE, label pertencente, pois, aos irmãos Stephen e David Dewaele – curadores desta nossa noite. E dizer que os Asa Moto são um projecto recente, com uma release recente, na verdade é quase um eufemismo: com notas soltas e à escuta pela DEEWEE há já uns meses, a release que os lança ‘Stay Awake/Wanowan EFEM’ tem data de lançamento a dia 29 de Fevereiro, fazendo desta a dupla mais fresca de Ghent (e, além de afiliados, conterrâneos dos 2manydjs). À escuta, os dois elementos mais novos e promissores da noite lançam à partida um efeito hipnotizante, com composições futuristas que se agarram à pele num registo de electrónica bem sintetizada. Vozes e sobreposições dançáveis, espaciais, entre twists disco que se apontam em Wanowan EFEM, Asa Moto deixam água na boca para o que aí virá. A nossa aposta é que ainda nos vamos lembrar deste momento por muitos e bons anos, pois eles este será apenas um começo. We can say it, don’t be shy. Shout it out loud towards the lights while turning green. We’ll surely be repeating it, even with our eyes closed, remembering those little-big things that make them so good and so unique.. Those things that almost make us want to call them names, in total surrender to their sound. Oh, yes. 2manydjs are the talented duo of brothers Stephen and David Dewaele, and they have been, for over more than a decade now, the coal firing line-ups all over the world. Because, make no mistake, wherever they go there will be a party to remember. If there was something that the documentary 'Part Of The Weekend Never Dies' clarified is that the Dewaele brothers do whatever they please. And that their hunger for music is – come on – voracious. If not, they wouldn't be responsible for the musical challenge to represent, almost simultaneously, the essence of Soulwax, the core of the Night Versions and the axes of Radio Soulwax – the project that tightens up all the loose ends. They are all this and more, in fact. It’s as if the universe had opened a black hole and suddenly pulled all the thriving music through it, towards them, so they could play with it and make us chase after. If Soulwax is the rock band and Night Versions the 'live' repercussion of Soulwax remixing itself, 2manydjs is mostly the result of their unrest while touring, which caused Stephen and David to turn into records and DJ mixers, starting to DJ after their own concerts on the road. This DJ duo was originally born, almost effortlessly and carelessly, from the radio program 'Hang the DJ': just because they liked music (like any good Belgian) and just because they are such amazing diggers since a young age. So they started remixing many genres and true perles, starting to worry some producers, labels, bands and even other DJs over the copyrights of the tracks revisited in their most amazing bootlegs and mash-ups – and, let’s just say, with a bit more genious than ‘Girl Talk’. Unlikely combinations remixed or totally rearranged with hip-hop, pop-rock, new wave, and then shaken with funk or corpulent electro, made 2manydjs the pioneers of a mash-up movement that ignores gender or labeling, as proven on "As Heard on Radio Soulwax" (Parts 1 and 2). We’ve grown listening to that Salt'N'Pepa ‘Push It’ track, reconverted with The Stooges, and the prog-rock-electro remixes that wrapped up Tiga, Justice, Daft Punk, Bassement Jaxx, MGMT or LCD Soundsystem with their unmistakable signature, constantly highlighted by Klaxons, Erol Alkan and James Murphy (the Despacio partner, when they form this massive trio with a cutting edge soundsystem). So, we can’t be the ones labeling them. They are so much, so, so much. That.. sun of a gun!.. They will keep us dancing hard. Again and again. - Ana Sofia Castanho Relaxed Muscle Let’s say this night is very strong in duos, so we are graced with the overwhelming presence of Jarvis Cocker and Jason Buckle: Jarvis, from the eternal band 'Pulp', and Jason from the electronic trio 'All Seeing I'. And no, they will no longer appear onstage full body painted, disguised with trashy makeup, snapping fingers throughout sharp lyrics of depravation and violence, in skeleton suits. They have now reinvented themselves, unmasked, unburdened gradually and individually from their main projects that could still bring some labeling to these new hearings. Relaxed Muscle is, by nature, rock. And pop. And punk. And electro. It provokes us with a somewhat liberating guitar tension, dragging electronic synths to the unutterable voice of Jarvis Cocker, a voice we have heard starring repeatedly in mixtures of Boys Noize, Erol Alkan and Discodeine. Music with a hint of sensuality and darkness, that makes want to go for more. - Ana Sofia Castanho The 2 Bears Put yourself right there in the middle of the crowd and let yourself go. Because once caught in Raf Rendell’s and Joe Goddard’s net, one simply just has to surrender to the rhythm.. After all, the night always seems too short when it comes to dancing to these two, Raf and Joe, from Greco Roman Soundsystem and Hot Chip respectively. So let’s just state: 2 Bears are a powerful duo. And they are because they have this magical power to bring the fun right to the dance floor, rescuing souls with disco sprinkled with african-funk glitter, under the reminiscences house music from the 90’s, that reaches a anthem status very quickly, making you put your hands in the air, where the 'feel good' is quite palpable. They recreate a very simple and unpretentious pleasure of dancing, orchestrating smiles between beats and voices, in a harmony that takes us to euphoria quite effortlessly. The latest album 'The Night is Young' proves it. Why? Because for this duo, dance music should be about celebration and keeping one glorious moment in our memories. So you’ll know when it hits you and it’s time for you to just.. dance! - Ana Sofia Castanho Legowelt For almost 20 years, Danny Wolfers has been doing important and serious things with music, always with an air of permanent wonder and a playful mood. If you visit his official website, you´ll find something which looks like it was made on a Commodore Amiga (a sort of machine-fetish for Wolfers) sometime in the late 90s. But no. It looks that way by Danny´s choice and it´s not out of cheap nostalgia, more a sort of stylized retro-futurism which reveals a lot of the essence of Legowelt´s music. Important note: Legowelt is just one of about 20 “alias” used by Wolfers to put out music. It just happens that it´s the one he uses the most and which became more popular. And yet, not even the Legowelt sound is easy to describe. The roots are classic house and techno, with an european touch, but given to electro and ambient excursions, imbued with transmissions from the mystical realm, captured by Wolfers on the multitude of machines which line his studio´s walls. Yes, because mysticism is something important to him, something by which he tries to influence conscience and spirit, while swaying us with his rhythms. Diffuse enough, but devoid of negative vibrations, because after all, music is also the freedom of the soul. Mentioning specific labels and releases is of lesser importance, when we´re speaking of someone whose day to day is, seemingly, made of waking up, turning on the machines and letting them sing into the night. Let´s focus on hearing their song, and dream with Legowelt. Dream of a future than can be, built with his help, made of the best of what has been. - Nuno Mendonça Asa Moto Oli and Gilles are Asa Moto, the mysterious duo recently signed by DEEWEE – label belonging to the brothers Stephen and David Dewaele. And saying that Asa Moto is a recent project with some recent release, it is actually an understatement: with only some loose notes for listening over DEEWEE’s platforms for a couple of months now, their first release 'Stay Awake / Wanowan EFEM' was just out on February 29th, making this the freshest duo from Ghent/Belgium. Listening to the two most promising and young elements of the night, they provoque a somewhat mesmerizing effect, given to their futuristic compositions. Voices and danceable spatial overlaps, with some disco twists, just leaves us mouth watering for what there will come. Our bet is that we will testimony the very start of something BIG: a kind surprise and offering from our curators. - Ana Sofia Castanho
