É difícil escrever sobre Speedy J. É difícil, por se correr o risco de cair num desfile de nomes de clubes, editoras e trabalhos, que mais se assemelhariam a um A a Z do techno. E porque haveria a tentação de encadear lugares comuns usados para descrever o género. É que Speedy J é um dos maiores arquitectos do techno como o conhecemos actualmente. E é por isso que se pode dizer que há um Speedy J para todos os momentos, e todos os momentos servem para Speedy J. As gerações mais novas podem vê-lo como praticante de um som capaz de fazer os mortos levantarem-se das campas, mas também têm sido confrontadas com a sua presença, uma constante na sua carreira, na vanguarda do estilo, como no projecto Zeitgeber, com o italiano Lucy. Mas outros, normalmente os mais velhos, associam-no ao nascer da cena rave na Europa, sendo que, juntamente com Laurent Garnier, talvez tenha sido o maior responsável, fora do habitual eixo Detroit/Berlim/UK, pela sua elevação artística e popularização. Oriundo de Roterdão, na Holanda, onde é uma espécie de herói nacional, Jochem Paap deambulou, desde o início dos anos 90, por editoras e géneros, do techno e trance, ao IDM e ao experimental, da Warp ou NovaMute à Plus 8, inovando tanto nas ideias como na tecnologia, chegando a emparelhar com Aphex Twin ou Autechre na revolucionária série Artificial Intelligence. Após assentar arraiais no techno de forma mais definitiva (mas nunca conformista), foi fiel ao estilo mesmo nos anos perdidos do minimal, ao qual, fazendo uso de uma postura permanentemente desafiadora, reagiu indo na direcção oposta, como no projecto Collabs com o peso-pesado Chris Liebing, e no seu selo Electric Deluxe, na qual tem um registo provado de projecção de novos valores. E aqui estamos, em 2016, habilitados a afirmar que Speedy J não é só uma peça fundamental do puzzle do techno. Ele é várias peças, e de vários puzzles, na electrónica. Se o seu nível de hype não atingiu o de outros, isso deve-se ao seu perfil avesso a auto-promoção, mas confrontados com o rolo compressor que é um seu set, apercebemo-nos da dimensão lendária de Jochem Paap. Nesta noite, haverá, como dizia uma das suas faixas, algo para a nossa mente. E para o nosso corpo, e a nossa alma. Pode alguma vez estar-se verdadeiramente preparado para Speedy J? It´s hard, because there´s a risk of making it into a list of clubs, labels and releases, which would closely resemble an A to Z of techno. Because we´d be tempted to throw down a bunch of clichés commonly used to describe the genre. You see, Speedy J is one techno´s main architects, as we know it. And that´s why you can say there´s a Speedy J for every moment, and every moment is appropriate for Speed J. Younger generations may see him as a practitioner of a kind of sound fit to raise the dead from their graves, but have also been confronted with his presence, which is a constant in his career, at the vanguard of the style, like in the Zeitgeber project, with italian Lucy. Others, usually older, associate him with the dawn of the rave scene in mainland Europe, with him being, along with Laurent Garnier, possibly the biggest responsible for the raising of the bar, artistically and in popularity, for that scene, away from the usual Detroit/Berlin/UK axis. Coming out of Rotterdam, Holland, where he is a bit of a national hero, Jochem Paap wandered through styles and labels since the early 90s, from techno and trance, to IDM and experimental, from Warp and NovaMute to Plus 8, innovating not only in ideas but also in technology, going as far as being a fundamental part, along with Aphex Twin and Autechre, of the revolutionary Artificial Intelligence series. After settling (but never conforming) more often on techno, he was faithful to it even in the wilderness years of minimal, seemingly revolting against it by going the opposite way, with a constantly challenging approach, like in the Collabs project with heavyweight Chris Liebing and his Electric Deluxe label, where he has a proven track record of launching new talent. And here we are in 2016, able to state that Speedy J is not just a fundamental piece in the techno puzzle. He is several pieces, of several puzzles in electronic music. If his hype levels never reached the heights of some others, that´s because he always kept a promotional low-profile, but when confronted by the steamroller that is one of his sets, you realize the legendary stature of Jochem Paap. On this night there will be, as one of his own tracks stated, something for your mind. And your body and your soul. Can you ever be truly ready for Speedy J? That one is up to you. - Nuno Mendonça
