"Astrobiology: origin and detection of life in our solar system"
The origin of life on Earth and the potential existence of extra-terrestrial life are two of the biggest questions in science waiting to be answered. The organic molecules necessary for the origin of life may have been formed on the primitive Earth (in the atmosphere and/or by geochemical synthesis, e.g. in deep sea vents) and/or outside our planet, being delivered to Earth by comets, asteroids and meteorites 4.6 to 3.8 billion years ago. Life may have also originated in other parts of our solar system, including Mars and some of the icy moons of Jupiter and Saturn (e.g. Europa and Enceladus). This talk will discuss the origin of life on Earth, how meteorites and comets may have provided the first building blocks of life to our planet, and how future space missions will detect potential signatures of alien life in our solar system.
